Anyone have any advice on keno machines? I haven't been to Vegas for 30 years, and I loved the old keno machines (coin in-coin out), but I imagine they're long gone. I'm not a great fan of the new video keno (multiple game machines) they have around here because the payout doesn't seem to be as big as the old machines, but I'm sure there are a lot of different keno machines in Vegas.

I like to play quarter machines, generally 5 spot pick or 6 spot pick but am going to be daring and try 7 spot pick this time. I've been lucky in the past with the 5 spot pick playing 1 quarter and winning $200 multiple times in a day, won $1000 doing this in one casino and switching machines every time I hit.

So, anyhow, would love to hear any info on keno machines in Vegas and where to play?

I know the Plaza and Fremont had these types of machine the last time I was there. That was back in March. You are talking about the machine that has the pen that you touch the screen with correct?

Possibly stupid question here. Does video keno play better than live keno? I don't play regular keno at all simply because it is so much of a house game.

Yes, video keno pays much better than live keno.

Typically live keno will have a payback of around 60-75%, whereas video keno's payback is usually around 92-96%

Using pick 4 as an example (thats what I play the most of) two common live keno pay tables for this game are:

    catch 2 = $1
    catch 3 = $5
    catch 4 = $60
Thats a payback of about 62% (at some places the catch 4 pays $75-82, that'd get the payback up to 65-68%)

or another live pay table example is:
    catch 2 = $1
    catch 3 = $3
    catch 4 = $130
Thats a payback of about 74%

By comparison, a very common pick 4 video keno pay table (at the $1 level) would be:
    catch 2 = $2
    catch 3 = $5
    catch 4 = $98
That has a payback of about 94%. At the 25 cent level you might see the catch 4 only pay out 90-92 credits, but thats still a 92-93% payback

Pick 4 is my favorite, but a lot of people play Pick 7. Some examples of pay tables there would be:

    Video Keno:
    catch 3 = $1
    catch 4 = $2
    catch 5 = $22
    catch 6 = $422
    catch 7 = $7000
    Thats a payback of 95%

    Live Keno
    catch 4 = $2
    catch 5 = $30
    catch 6 = $300
    catch 7 = $5000
Note there is no payout for catch 3, I didn't just forget that. Otherwise this would be a payout of about 71%

Main Street Station has 6 of those keno machines, I don't really like the fact that they speed up the machines so your money doesnt last as long. lol

El Cortez had them also. I'd never seen a machine so old and ghetto that I had to pump some money through it.

My "stupid" question was these "older" video keno machines. So "pens" to select the numbers?? When the hell were these made?

In the 80's I would assume.
I hadn't seen them since Fitz (Reno), or Carson Nugget in Carson City....but MSS does have a couple.

If 2 hits pays 2, and 3 hits pays 5, that's still only 94.78% payback...meh This is the paytable that is offered for play money at videopoker.com

The best video keno I ever found, was some 97% payback caveman keno (I had shack run the numbers), and it had a 5c minimum bet...not a bad way to spend $5 getting booze.

What casino slash pick number was that? I would be willing to deal with the "Donk, Donk, Donk, Dink, Donk, Donk, Dink, Donk" of Caveman Keno for that...:evillaugh

videopoker.com uses "Paytable 3" for caveman...roughly 96% everywhere. http://wizardofodds.com/games/keno/appendix/2/ The times I've bothered to look, the paytables are usually a lot worse than that.
