Good rant. I'm a big fan of both Deep Dish Pizza Casserole and floppy NY Pizza though. They're just different things.

He's dead wrong on the hot dogs though. Chicago Style through the Garden >>>>>> plain dog.

When I first moved away, I desperately missed both Chicago style pizza and hot dogs in addition to the ethnic neighborhood restaurants . Sadly, my middle-aged stomach is no longer a fan of Chicago style pizza.

Hot dogs however, there are no other dogs other than a Vienna Beef Chicago style dog. period.

Now I'm both homesick and hungry.

Numero Uno makes a great "deep dish...better than both

and I haven't had an American dog worth a damn yet

just ordered 30lbs of real custom Prinzkorv dogs from Geires in Sarasota

Can't speak to Numero Uno, never tried it. It is really difficult to get good Chicago Pizza though. Even as close as I am (outside Milwaukee) not a lot of places do it right.

As for dogs, in general California is a complete epic failure in terms of decent sausage or cheese. When I lived there (LA twice and Central Coast once) I just could not find anything locally made that was very good. No idea why. If you hit up the midwest swing by and I'll hook you up.

In N' Out really does have the drive through burger mastered though. Amazing how such a simple concept (don't freeze the meat, use good ingredients, keep the menu simple, and be paranoid about quality control) isn't being copied elsewhere

No angst here. NYC has foldable flatbread and Chicago has a deep savory pie. It's all in the semantics. It can be Ginger AND MaryAnn.

Now dogs ... Sonoran-style, all the way.

The joke among Chicagoans is that the only time we eat deep dish, aka "Chicago style", pizza is when our out-of-town friends are visiting and want to try it.

Chicago-style thin crust (square cut, CRISPY crust rather than soggy cardboard-style) is where it's at.

Jon and I have some mutual acquaintances and crossed paths when we were teenagers; not that I remember him. He's 100% right about pizza.

I will get deep dish on occasion but agreed..the thing lost in all this, is the thin crust at local joints is amazing.

Funny story I was a restaurant manager at an arcade before I was a teacher. We wanted to order a device that would take frozen doughballs into circles for pizza. (We did not have room to make our own crust from scratch..and it was an arcade) The company had distributors. There was a distributor for Chicago and suburbs and one for WI, Rest of IL, IN, MI, MN and IA! So yeah we like our pizza here!

I'm originally from NY and my wife is from Chicago, so at our wedding we had a "Battle of the Pizzas". NY pizza won by a long shot! (Not that she'll ever admit it.) LOL! Love this video. :)

The fact that nobody even mentions Detroit style (née Sicilian) is a damn shame. Buddy's Pizza is absolute perfection. Jet's Pizza will do if it's all you have in the area.

Holy cow, you just described what my family in the Chicago area says about thin crust. Thats all we get cut in squares somewhat and never deep dish.

Interesting....do you know if any of the major chains carry the frozen variety? Albertsons, Ralphs, Pavilion?
