    My Trip Report

I'm not going to do a long drawn-out report, as MMVIII has been well chronicled by others, but I wanted to make sure I brought some low-roller perspectives and updates to everyone's attention.

For those that don't know me I'm a red chip BJ & $.25 VP player, coupon user, and promo chaser. By keeping my expenses very low I am still able make it to Vegas 3-4 times a year despite bouts of un- and under-employment the last 1-1/2 years.

First of all I want to say how great a time I had meeting up with all the VMB-ers at Main Street Station on St Pat's and the Cosmo soiree' on Friday night. It's great to have friends, even if you haven't met before!

This trip was the first with Lady Friend (LF) since NYE 2 years back. I had 2 free flights on SW, and we combined 2 offers at Riviera for 5 nights total for $25, plus 2 comp nights at Orleans with a $25 dining credit. Alamo came through with a car for the week under $120, so travel expenses were minimal.

I ended up almost exactly even on cash for the trip, which includes cash tips & purchases, but I probably put 100 bucks in charges on the credit card. Still, a very good outcome for 7 nights in Sin City! Here's some categorized thoughts from the trip:

Hotels - After a 1-1/2 hour flight delay we didn't check in until 11 PM at the Riv, so I knew we were screwed room-wise. Even though I asked for smoking, they had us tagged for the non-smoking North tower room. Monte Carlo (of course) wasn't available so we ended up in the bottom of the heap San Remo "tower", with an option of checking the next day for an upgrade. After discussion with LF, we decided to stay in the San Remo room. Nothing special, but clean, flat screen TV, and a wonderful empty space under the TV where the refrigerator would have been if they hadn't run out of renovation funds. I felt the beds were hard, but we soldiered through. There were long lines during the day for checking in/out, but they did have an Invited Guest line. We checked out/in at around 5 AM when we switched offers mid-stay, so we never dealt with the lines. No problem keeping the same room. They do have these silly electronic kiosks, which I think made it impossible for the clerk to accept my $20 offer when we originally checked in, though we could have gotten a suite for $60 extra a night. NOT. Check-out was painless via TV, so again no line. No coffee maker, but a cheap Starbucks knock-off was down by registration, and we used it for 2-buck coffees to get us kick-started in the AM (or early PM). They only charged the resort fee for the one paid night.

Checking in at Orleans I assume was painless since LF did so while I froze my butt by the car at valet waiting 15 minutes for a bellman. I really like the Orleans rooms, and had no complaints this time. My "home" Boyd hotel is supposed to be MSS, but I never get comp offers from there, and I keep getting 2 nights at Orleans, and I'm not upset with that. Even though I would prefer to stay downtown, as long as I have a car the Orleans works fine. No resort fee for the 2 comp nights, I checked the room balance before bed the night before we checked out (only found the expected restaurant charges). However when I went to use the TV check-out in the AM it wasn't working. Called the front desk, and they verified the same balance, and checked us out over the phone. So again no lines.

MMVIII - What fun! Two meets with VMB plus poker tourney railbirding, and a meet with the folks from Trip Advisor at Rockhouse made for some new friends and acquaintances. I did pretty well with basketball bets overall, and got to show off my Syracuse wear at the soiree' thanks to a late game on Friday. LF has decided she had better stick with NBA bets. My apologies to the TA folks for not coming back after lunch, but Rockhouse was f-in LOUD.

Gambling - LF doesn't want to talk about it. I did pretty well, especially early in the trip. Got my 5% freeplay from El Cortez for cashing my IRS check, then was ahead for most of the trip. Had a great BJ session at Slots-A-Fun one nght, played $1 Mississippi Stud on the virtual dealer machines at Riviera, and got my butt kicked at Let It Ride more than once. I hit the Sahara for the last time while LF was in the spa (thanks Groupon) and hit my $25 matchplay. LF & I both had a good BJ session at the Cal, which is usually not the way it goes. No royals, and not enough quads contributed to a break-even trip for me.

Food - I plan on spending less than $10 a person (before tax & tip) for good food in Vegas, and as usual accomplished this again this trip. We had a bunch of coupons, but didn't use most of them. We had lunch at Ellis Island, LF said her chicken fried steak was the most tender she's ever had (and she's from Texas). I had the steak & eggs (same steak as the special), and with 2-4-1 it was like 10 bucks for both of us. We did 2-4-1 ACG at Quesadilla in IP, nothing special, but a decent light lunch. We used the dining credit at Big Al's in Orleans, which was great as always. I had the scampi, LF had jumbalaya (I think) with pasta (?) which she couldn't finish. Big meal was the Flame at El Cortez - I had 20 oz porterhouse, LF had the filet, we split garlic mashed & sauteed mushroom sides. The bill BEFORE the $25 ACG coupon was only $55, and after using comps & points I owed 10 bucks total plus tip. Awesome deal and excellent food. We had steak & eggs at Gold Spike, lunch at TGI Fridays at Orleans using a 25% off coupon & a gift card, free shrimp cocktails at Golden Gate, used Casino Royale comps for a massive sugar rush dessert at Denneys, and I even crawled across the street one AM at around 7:00 for a couple EggMcMuffs while LF slept one morning. We never made it to Peppermill, Hash House, or any buffets.

Miscellaneous - The Deli is open again at Binion's by the poker room, but they don't have the Reuben on the menu, so it may just be cold cut sandwiches. I found the March Coast Connection laying on the counter at Rebel gas station/convenience stores, and the only matchplay was $10 at Orleans which we both used. Not sure if it's still given out with the LVRJ or not. $1 Mississippi Stud at Riviera was a blast and beat out the $10 minimums at the H17 BJ tables there for gambling during our stay. LF loved the spa experience at the Westin using the Groupon deal. After 3 hours I was starting to wonder, heh. We walked from Cosmo to Aria and nearly died on our feet going through Crystals to get there. Turns out there's a back entrance towards the Cosmo valet area that's a LOT shorter. I didn't find Aria special at all, but loved the look & feel of the Cosmo (but not the table minimums). And even though we looked, we couldn't find the secret pizza place. The only casino drawing we participated in was Lucky Dog at Riviera, and didn't win anything. LF wanted to do the Zip Line downtown, but later in the trip it got cold so she decided against it.

Even though we were there for 7 nights, I was surprised at how much we didn't get around to, but hey, that's a Vegas trip, right? Fat drunk & stupid may be no way to go through life, but it makes Vegas a great time. Have fun & good luck to all!
