    My Trip Report

I write for a living yet I write about the shortest TRs in existence. LOL Oh well.

What is the deal at NY-NY? I don’t scour casinos like some folks, but I estimate I looked at the pay schedules on about 50 machines – for the record I play $.25 Jacks, DDB or BP when the first two aren’t available – and the best, very relative sense of that word, btw, I found was two 8/5 Jacks platforms. I’m talking 7/5 Jacks, 6/5 Bonus, 9/5 (or worse, yes, worse) DDB throughout the joint. Special.

A room is just a place to sleep. Right. I last stayed at the IP ‘bout five years ago. And I was reminded why I’ve not been back. I had a “deluxe†but not remodeled room; oh man, I hope and pray that wasn’t a remodeled room. The TV was a 15-inch beaut, the furniture was banged up and abused, the bed had two sheets, no blanket, a s’more for a mattress (you know, hard/soft/lumpy/oozy) and a chintzy bedspread, a good hunk of the porcelain in the sink was missing and the bathtub went from hardly draining to that-should-go-down-in-30-minutes after maintenance came by to “fix†the problem; note to housekeeping: two showercaps … one for each foot. I was on the 15th floor and looked out over Caesars, etc. Well, kinda, after I looked out over the expanse of rooftop. Good thing it was pouring so I wasn’t tempted to keep the slider open long because the noise and the stench emanating from the blowers down below was overpowering. I’m just so thankful that I had a lawnmower-dB-equivalent heating unit to provide white noise. But the nicest part was doubtless the river pouring through the garage and how people couldn’t drive in for several hours on Monday eve. If I ever suggest that CC be imploded next, please correct me. And if I ever diss the Roachera again, please correct me.

I had dinner at Embers in that funky dining “village†on the 5th floor. It's throwback Vegas. The meal – filet and king crab – was quite good; I’d say the restaurant is the highlight of the joint. The breakfast buffet in the Teahouse was the worst I’ve tried in Sin City. Other than that I had some drinks – way overpriced – and spent the rest of my time at Caesars.

I love Caesars more each and every visit. Bazillions of great eateries. Classy kitsch. Great service. Bartop FP Jacks. Ketel One. What’s not to like? I am soooo looking forward to those whizkids at Harrahtic’s taking over and giving us Rio Part Deux.

Other food: Garduno’s – commendable carne adobada, awful chile verde (first time I’ve said that), good oysters, excellent salsas, good tortillas, awful hostess. MGM breakfast buffet – would someone please explain to me why this place charges 13 bucks for breakfast? All-American Grill at Rio – I had a good salmon cobb salad for lunch, but the place is too frenetic.

Monorail: Good for the long-haul but not for mid-range jaunts. Of course, I knew that going in so why did I even bring it up?

Thanks to those who made it to the meet. Nice chattin’ with old friends and making new acquaintances. And in the case of Wando, nice to finally meet an old friend.

Sent mom to Mamma Mia! for her birthday. She loved it. Of course. It’s a killer show.

For those who are easily offended, please turn away now: I went to HP to see the gang. The you-know-what is in transit from the printer, so if you ordered a copy of my you-know-what you should receive it in the not-too-distant future. If you asked for my John Hancock on your you-know-what that will add a few weeks ‘cause I’m not going back for a while so a case has to be sent to me here in Dreary Drippy Formerly Nice Southern California. I also learned that if planning to get a copy of my you-know-what through one of the usual retail channels that will take considerable time as the machinery has to spool up.

    OK, you can return.

I think 777 brews better beer than MC. I also think that MC is about as big of a VP wasteland as NY-NY. From what I saw at the Palms – as I’ve said in the past – casinos really shouldn’t fear FP-but-less-than-100-percent and pos-EV, high-vol games because plenty of “savvy†locals were playing awful machines when FP variants were within sight.

I think my Vegas burnout has subsided. This was the first trip in quite a long time that my drive home was punctuated with plotting as to when I’ll return. That’s a good thing.

Ken--sometimes you really DO need to remember why you make vows never to stay at a place again...Sounds like you still managed to get lots of eating & VP in! I really need to try the beers down at MSS--don't know why I haven't yet. What is your favorite??

    Hey Ken

At what bar did you find the FP JoB? Were they quarters or dollars?

    Thanks!

Kikky's right, Josh. I was referencing my book. Someone took offense at my shameless shilling for it several weeks ago and this is my way of having a little fun with it.

I pretty much confine my play to Caesars when on the Strip. You should consult VPfree Homepage for other platforms. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

The bar in the sports book. Quarter and up. There are also some easy-on-the-arms slant tops right outside Shadow. Actually, you can find FP Jacks in various denoms all over the joint ... at least until Harrahtic's takes over.

    Ken,
Was the meal at Embers the one you weren't exactly looking forward to - the one with your cousin?
Or was that a different dining experience?
By the way, it was a pleasure meeting your mom at the MC.

That was an enjoyable trip report Ken. I didn't have to get the dictionary out on this one. [IMG] You aren't using a ghost writer for your TR's now are you? [IMG]

Very enjoyable. We've stayed there four or five times now, at both resorts (still haven't stayed at MonteLago), and absolutely love it. It's a unique Las Vegas getaway. If we had the coin we'd be in SouthShore right now. LOL

nice TR Ken. I'm with you, a hotel room is supposed to be relaxing enough so that when you need to kick your feet up or sleep, you don't feel like you're staying with a poverty-stricken relative. Especially in Vegas, when you can get a 4-star hotel for the same price you'd get a 2.5-star hotel anywhere else in the USA.

The best payback VP machines I've found are at the Westward Ho. They have several 10/8 quarter machines, jacks or better, called "Nevada Power Poker". That's right; 50 coins for a full house & 40 for a flush. You also get 30 coins for 3 aces.

El Cortez, do they also pay double for two pair? If they do it sounds like well over 100% payback with the thirty coins for three aces. [IMG]
    Are the machines very busy?

I agree MSS beer is better than MC, but MC is lightyears better than Colorado Belle in Laughlin. MSS Blackchip Porter is fine but the Pale Ale is tops. The Brewpub also has a specialty brew once in awhile, the cherry stout was quite tasty.

Happy Hour was 3-5p Mon-Thurs with half price munchies and $2 pints. The peel and eats are tops.
