So I am flying to Reno from East Coast and I have the choice between a 1 hour layover or a 9 hour layover. I am kind of tempted to go for the 9 hour layover because I view it as a free day in Vegas and I think it would be torture to be so close yet so far. I figure I could just cab over and hit the southern strip Mlife resorts and head back to the airport and have a decent day. My friends think I'm crazy and want to do the 1 hour layover. What should I do?

You already know the answer. Spend the day in Vegas. From the east coast, why not.

Yep, if you're tortured you've answered your own question.

Or spend the hour, get to Reno earlier and gamble with the far looser slots and better table game rules.

For World-class dining, go to the Top Deck at the Cal Neva and have a Jalapeno Popper Bacon Grilled Cheese sandwich.

I would for sure do that if I was staying in Reno but we are heading to Incline Village near the lake and staying at the Hyatt Regency which has a nice but very small casino. That's part of the reason I want to get some Vegas style gambling in.

I like the 9 hour layover.
This means you really only have a few short hours and as a result, would have to hit the machines fast and hard which could make it exciting and produce a nice profit.

I posted earlier in the Shortest Trip thread about my husband having a 4 hour layover in Vegas on his way home from Boston or NYC. I thought he was crazy, but he said he had a really good time. His bags were checked through, so he just dashed to the taxi line and got a cab to Excalibur. He cashed in some vouchers we had from our old MGM credit card and hit the blackjack tables for an hour or two and then back to the airport and home.

I think a 9 hour layover would be fun. If you're flying with other people, that can make the decision more difficult. Will they have fun with it or complain that they could be in Tahoe already? Is it possible for you to let them fly through and have your own layover?

Hyatt is a nice place, but you're right about it not being exactly the Vegas experience. I say Do it! Do it! Do it! :woot:

What do you want to do in Vegas? If it is just gamble what kind if games would you play? The craps at the Hyatt Incline Village is standard as well as the blackjack. So if you are table games player I don't see the reason to go to Vegas just to pay. If you want to sightsee, ect. then you already know the answer.

I'm predominantly table games will mix in VP. I know I can do everything gambling wise in Tahoe but it doesn't match the atmosphere of just being in Vegas. I think I'm going to go for the long layover I got one friend to do it with me and the other two are taking the 1 hour layover.

My last flt that went through Vegas has either a layover of either 4 hrs or 1 1/2 hrs. I purposely took the 4-hours and walked from airport to Hard Rock for a little gambling and on way back stopped at the Ethiopian restaurant on Paradise and Trop for a meal.

Wow how long was the walk? I know it's only like a mile away but I feel like it would be difficult.

I've flown in and out of Vegas and spent less than 9 hours there RT as my only stop so 9 hours is worth it to make a quick trip.

    I would but I'm a degen.

I've had layovers in Vegas on my way to Burbank. It was little weird knowing the strip was with-in reach but if I had wanted to go to Vegas and not Burbank I would have. You are going to Reno to Gamble I assume?
Las Vegas will be there the next time you are ready to go. You've been to Vegas in the past and you will go again right? Vegas ain't going anywhere. And it will be more special and not rushed the next time you go.

Flying into Reno but heading to Lake Tahoe. I agree with your points. If I were staying in Reno it wouldn't be wort the stop but there isn't Vegas style gambling in North Lake Tahoe.

Its what I thought too when I first read your post: if you are going to Reno, why take a longer flight just to stop in Las Vegas?

I've never had a stopover in Las Vegas, but we did get to the airport where they told us it'd be an eight hour delay for our flight. We checked our bags and then took a taxi back to The Strip. Wife and I both found it was ample time to go and do a few things, we wound up hitting up a couple of different casinos and got in a fair amount of gambling before heading back to the airport - and since we had already checked in and had our boarding passes there was no line up for that, we just went through security and to the gate.

I could choose between San Francisco or Las Vegas and Vegas was much cheaper. No direct to Reno unfortunately.

As mentioned up-thread, it really depends on whether or not you're flying alone... if you are, then I say take the 9-hour lay-over!
Be sure to skip the carry-on & check your bag... you could easily have a solid 6-hours of gambling before having to head back.
You didn't mention if you were flying first class or have 'pre-check'...if you do, then you could probably squeeze 7 hours of gambling in.

If you're travelling with others, then I would go with what "the group" wants... lobby for the 9-hours, but if you're out-voted, let it go... hit Vegas on your way back home instead!!

Alright guys it's booked. Going to be a long day but worth it. Leaving BWI at 6:15 AM Eastern and land in Vegas at 8:20 AM. My flight then leaves Vegas at 5:45 PM and lands in Reno at 6:45 PM. I am checking my bag (love you Southwest) and I do have pre check so I figure I can get at least 7 hours in. I'll probably try to hit every mlife resort south of Bellagio other than Excalibur and maybe Cosmo. Should be a busy but fun day.
