Well, I got the call from HR today.. THEY HIRED ME!!
SWEET! This is a job I've basically been trying to get since I was 18 (with company), and I FINALLY got it! Good too, because it starts out where my last job left off (pay wise) and GOES UP FROM THERE!

Congrats, Tim! I am so happy you found the right job.

If you've got any extra job-finding mojo, please email it to my husband. The hospital where he works has decided he's too important to quit before the merger, but not important enough to offer him a job for after the systems are switched over. Bastards.

Monday April 7th...which is good because it means I'll get paid April 30th.
Now (politics aside) fingers crossed, I'll get a UIB retro-payment check for $6300 by April 18th, I CAN take that celebration trip to Vegas for Easter...otherwise, Vegas will have to wait until October or so (so I can get caught up on all my bills)

Be thankful for your blessings, that windfall -- and everything is political, btw -- and start building up that savings, that retirement, that credit. You have the power. Vegas ain't going nowhere.

The retirement will build itself (CalPERS; already has $33k in it)
Yup, savings too (told wife we put $600 back a month for savings, and $300 a month back for Vegas trips/ 10% & 5%)

Hey Tim ... Congrats on getting that job.

Of course, you know what that means ... less time for Vegas.

Tim, you're going to convince yourself to do exactly what you want to do to continue a lot of what you've been doing that got you in these straits, and nothing we say will, nor necessarily should at some level, change you. And that's fine. It's your life. No one is wishing you ill. Know that. But you will continue to get what might be pointed advice; goes with the territory when you put forth the type of stuff you put forth.

As for CalPERS, do not assume it will be there as it was for current and previous retirees. A lot of public employees in California are going to have a rude awakening down the line. The days of 3.2 @ 35 are so long gone.

Regardless, as I said, congrats on landing the new gig. That is the first step and the most important.
