My son brought home a map of the 50 states they had to label for his middle school social studies class.

It had a score of 90% on the top. I wondered aloud why he'd lost 10 points. All the states were labeled. I asked him if it was because of a lack of capitalization or perhaps neatness.

He came over and pointed to Nevada and said, "That's why." The directions were to just label the state name, but he'd added the name of his favorite city--since our "family trip" this summer! Labeling Vegas had broken the rules of the assignment.

I can't wait to bring this up to his teacher at Parent-Teacher conferences next week! If he was one of my students I would've given him extra credit--or at least one of my Bellagio pens from the sportsbook!

    10% is ridiculous.

maybe take off 1/50th (2%) since I guess you could call Las Vegas "wrong".

but how can you lose 10% if you get the other 49 states right????

That was my math too, shifter! That is my main question for the teacher on conference night...

Tough indeed. She's the most experienced teacher at the school, too. Actually there may have only been 48 states when that teacher started teaching! Or perhaps just 13 colonies...

Thanks, frank! He's well on his way! He definitely has Vegas in mind a lot!

We were in the pharmacy the other day waiting around for a prescription when he pointed to a package of cream and said, "Is that called Vegasil? What's that for, Dad?"

All I could say was, "It's for when you're totally itching to go to Vegas!"

Thanks, Bill! I've learned a lot from them too. It was interesting to attend the visitation for one of the strictest teachers I had back in high school. The line of former students was out the door, the longest line the funeral director had ever had there. The best teachers do make the biggest difference. Teaching is one of those professions where you don't immediately see the product of your efforts.

    :evillaugh

So did I, but I don't think most of my teachers graded like that. Even the "tough ones". What about a kid that misses thirty states? Does he get a -200%? :evillaugh The worst he really should get is 49/50 for that "error", imo. And penalizing for this, although justified for "not following directions", helps reinforce learning to be boring and plain. I agree with Richard, if you want to give him a 90% for not capitalizing (because that really should have been enforced, imo), that's okay. But 10% off just because you added correct information to a map? He even put Vegas in roughly the correct position.

10% for one state? Sounds like the teacher was using 6:5 rules

Yeah, 10% is too much. I could see if he didn't label "Nevada", but he was just adding to his assignment. This is obviously a case of his teacher losing a shitload of money at the Bellagio, and taking it out on him! :)

That guy ought to be horsewhipped. Lots of my former colleagues are anal. I once failed a six weeks period because I didn't turn in a set of nonsense copy exercises. I had received 100 percent on EVERY test. For the record, I do not recall the name of that teacher.

It shouldve been considered extra credit since he added a city along with the states!

That's nothing. Vegas has cost my two sons any chance at being able to afford college.
