Hi, I had a nice win of $1400 at slot machine at the Westgate. They asked me for my TIN number, I never heard of this, so didn't have one, they paid me $1000 and said they had to keep 30% tax, but because I was from the UK, I could get that money back once I had a TIN number. They gave me a receipt and a W7 form and sent me on my way. They weren't all that helpful to be fair. So I went down to the IRS office to see if I could get this TIN number. The IRS office said I needed to fill in the W7 form and send it back to them with a certified copy of my UK passport from the issuing agency.

So my question is, how do I get a certified copy of my UK passport from the issuing agency? I've done a Google search and can't find anything.

    Many thanks in advance :nworthy:

I assume it would basically work the same as it does in Canada.

I've completed a form, submitted my passport and fee. A week later, I picked up my original passport and 3 certified true copies of my passport.
This was all done at a Government passport office.

Interesting. I hit 6,8k hand pay at The Mirage 2 years ago. They did all the work for me, all I had to was give them my passport and sign the papers and was then paid the win in full. 2 months later got a snail mail with some sort of numbers and stuff on it, can't even remember but TIN sounds familiar.

The old Terribles did it all for me too a while ago. Unfortunately the rules have changed and casinos are no longer able to do this. UK citizens have to pay the tax and do a tax return. My friend has just received her ITIN number after her jackpot in August last year but not received her check yet. She was told by the Embassy in London that the rules were changed due to fraud but how much was due to IRS keeping all that money because it's too much hassle to claim it back is anyone's guess, lol.

Anyone know if the rules are any different for British nationals living elsewhere? (I live in Ireland)

    Thanks

I'm assuming it goes by your passport as the issue with fraud on the taxes was people with dual citizenship and Brits living in the US using their UK passport to get wins tax free and most probably swapping seats with someone with a U.S. or other passport in order to be paid in full and then handing the money to the other person. I'd certainly thought of that but now it's changed so that's the end of that. The U.S. Embassy are very helpful if you have any questions.

It's been a right pain. I very nearly gave up trying to figure it out! As I said the Westgate weren't very friendly or even helpful. They left me waiting for about an hour before they gave me a receipt and send me packing, They also gave me a players card I didn't ask for lol

Still I guess it gives me an excuse to have a day out in London at the American Embassy lol

That was the issue.........fraud. Tax is based on residency, not the passport you carry.

I got a guy at Caesars to do it for me, ITIN number arrived by snail mail in about 2 weeks, but that was about 10 years ago. I carry it with me all the time but once they have it tagged with your player card, you don't need it. I have had 4k royals at Orleans, Venetian, CET. And Golden Nugget Had no problems being paid the full amount.

I would phone first because they told my friend they were closing the department down at some point.
