On my last 5 or 6 visits to Luxor, I have received a large snack basket or a fruit gift from a host who I have never met and never called. I don't feel I need a host, as I am quite satisfied with booking my offers and having no further obligations. I am platinum, mostly coming from spend. I visit 5 - 6 times per year and when I booked last the representative mentioned "my" host by name.

Do you more experienced players have any advice re host vs. book-the-offers and be done with it?

I am not really understanding your question. Having a host does not create any "further obligations". If you have a host giving you free baskets, take it and don't change your play or routine at all

Your question makes it sound like booking with the host is hassle or something. Please clarify the question.

Based on what I am reading here, I would book with the host. Unless some other offers are better and the host can not match.

Sorry I was not clear. My concern is that if I book with a host I will be expected to play some specific amount to compensate the host for his time. Is that the way it works?

Just gamble what you normally do and are comfortable with. Don't feel pressured to up it. All I would do is drop a quick email to say thank you for the basket.
