I have been looking for ideas, and run across a couple, but I figured I'd ask again and frame the question from my angle:

You have a rental car and the opportunity to take a road trip outside Vegas for a day. You've been to Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire and the Hoover Dam in the past, and aren't interested in returning. What's worth a day trip out of the city?

I have looked for "ghost towns" as one idea, but have yet to find the definitive answer. And I'm not married to the idea that I need to find a ghost town, I'm just trying to figure out what next. It's one of those long trips with a rental car, so taking time to hit the road seems like a good idea next week. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion. That turned out to be the destination of choice after considering a few options, and we enjoyed the trip. Not a must see type of thing, but for those who want a day trip and something interesting to see, Rhyolite fits the bill nicely.

If unsure about ghost towns, I suggest a trip to Pahrump and tour the winery and eat in the restaurant in it. Tour is free, wine and food are AWESOME.

Glad to hear you had good time ClownH, we really enjoyed the drive. Zamboni, I did not know they had a winery and it will be our next trip destination.

I have had bottles of the Symphony (also name of the restaurant) shipped to my house- it is that good. And I am not a wine person- at all.

    Head south!
I always take a loop from Vegas to Jean and Primm on the 15.
Get off at the Nipton/Searchlight exit. Stop in for a beer at the Nipton General Store/Bar.
Visit Searchlight - Nugget and Terribles for a few slots and cheap drinks/food.
Continue south to Cal-Nev-Ari. Stop in this place for sure. Casino, bar, diner, steakhouse, post office, DMV, dance club.....all in one little charming joint!
Carry on to Laughlin for an evening on the river and a cheap room.

Been to Laughlin before, so going that way was of no interest. Will have to consider the other options for the next trip.
