I only get about 2 hours of sleep nightly. I cannot sleep. I get up, tired and go to work and come home and sleep and thus my insomnia is controlling my life.
I know with children you can adjust their sleep schedule but how would I adjust mine and make changes for a good nights sleep?

I struggled with a bout several years ago.

    No food after 7pm
    Advil PM
    Melatonin

I took advil PM and it knocked me out. Once I started getting back into a regular sleep pattern I used the melatonin pills and it worked great

Talk with your physician. Wife did not sleep well until assessed in a sleep clinic for sleep apnea. She now has a CPAP (Constant Positive Air Pressure) machine and is able to get a full night's sleep almost every night. I even sleep better because she no longer snores!

    Melatonin works well.
Nyquil Zzzzz works well too but read the box as you don't want to take it every night.

If you are physically able, increasing or starting a regular exercise routine can dramatically improve the quality of one's sleep. Just be sure to avoid exercise too close to your bedtime.
I finish my run or gym work by 7:00pm, as I'm not a morning exerciser. Many find that exercise early in the morning works best for them.

Nyquil has some recent medicine just for sleep. I researched and found it to benadryl but it makes you drowsy. It's called ZZZQuil. I am told it works. I have not tried it. All of the PM medicines give me an awful headache when I wake up. Waht works for me is Ambien or a low dose of Elavil. Ambien in my opinion is the best solution however there are horror stories out there about it. I think you just have to be careful when taking it. I have taken it for many years and the strangest thing I did was talk to a friend on the phone and not remember it the next day. It works fast and it's available in generic form. Generic Elavil is cheaper. It works but gives me a foggy feeling.

    Regular exercise
Don't eat spicy or acidic foods close to bedtime
Sex or masturbation can help some people
Most doctors advise against using your phone, tablet, or laptop in bed
I would advise against any pharmaceutical sleep aids because your body will become reliant and then you'll really be an insomniac without them

Talk to your doctor if the issue persists. There may be some underlying medical issue that they can help you address

This would be my approach with morning exercise. Should all that fail, there is always 80 proof vodka.:drunk:

I had a bout for a couple of months after returning from a Hawaii trip where the time change really disrupted me.

I tried NyQuil and Tylenol PM but I would wake up even groggier than I did with so little sleep. Melatonin worked like a charm for me. I'll echo the exercising tip too.

Not really a good idea if you want to avoid dependance. THC withdrawal is a real thing, and insomnia is its worst symptom.

I'll echo exercise, no caffeine after noon and perhaps reading some really boring books.

ZzzzQuill's active ingredient is Diphenhydramine (Benadryl). So skip buying the expensive product, and if you have to buy generic Benadryl. I had to take my son to a sleep specialist a few months ago (he's 20). The Doctor told him to take Melatonin 2 hours before he wanted to go to sleep, then about an hour after that turn off to tv, computer, and phone, and either listen to some quiet music, or read until ready to go to sleep. Then when you get up in the morning turn on bright lights to stop the natural melatonin production from the body, but the most important thing he said was to stay on a schedule, go to bed and wake up at the same time every day. My son is doing better now.

Agree 100% on the schedule,I find it really interesting to see that my US based friends turn to medication/drugs as a first solution, and that a lot of drugs are easy to get in the US. I went to the doctor for my sleeping problems and drugs/prescripted medication were really the last method. For instance too much stimulance from a tv for instance can be a source for sleeping problems. Blue light, which comes from sunlight, artificial light and tv reduces the production of melatonin, which can be the cause of insomnia. The main reason that the body produces melatonin is preparing the body for the change from day to night rhythm.

The OP described he crashes after work,I did that too but that doesnt help the cause either.

Try to find a comfortable rhythm and try not to change your biological clock by sleeping after work, try to go for a walk after work, unload the stress but keep a healthy level of movement.
