    My Trip Report

Well that was fun. SHORT, SWEET, AND FUN.
I think I like these 4 day trips more than the 6 days I've
normally done...I'm ready to come home after 3 full days.

Early morning SOUTHWEST flight out of Oakland, 1hr. 20min. and I was at RIO registration by 9am.
I'd called my good buddy 'Rose' in registration a few days prior to leaving like I always do...she has all my booked trips in the computer and kept an eye on the rooms I like.
SURPRISE, SURPRISE...one was empty and just needed HOUSEKEEPING to do their 'thang', so I went into the buffet and had breakfast... 11:00 I was unpacking.

There's not much new happening at the RIO. One convention had just left with another one coming in the following day. Good for business and the employee's were in pretty good moods. These days with the on again/off again rumors about the sale of the joint and the low volume of guests...they can get a bit down in the dumps, but spirits were good and I had a good time.

Everything is open and seemed to be on their normal operating schedules.
There were quite a few new...tall...themed slot machines scattered between the main entry area, the buffet side and in Masquerade Village and people 'were' playing quite a bit.

The POOL is in full swing and they've opened up (or closed off depending on how you look at it...) the topless area on the far side of the area. NO SAPPHIRE BABES this time and not many guest either. There were a few couples, mostly groups of guys and only a few women chose to tan everything upstairs.
The other pool areas were full of less adventurous guests and kids, all enjoying the sun 'n water.

I was down there (topless side) very early one morning, kicking back in a lounge chair before it got busy when a group of 5 older guys came in, along with 3 young hotties. The girls stripped down to next to nothing, cocktails showed up next and they began to party. They weren't bothering anyone, but the 'vibe' was deffinitely not that of the other guests. THEN...the 'Men In Black' showed up along with who looked like a pool guy manager. One guy was on his cell phone, the others were talking to the girls and their older guy 'hosts'. It went quick, the party broke up, and they all packed up and left.

Was this a...'new' NO TOLERANCE program the RIO has adopted? Guess they didn't like getting busted last year over the problems with the Sapphire girls and weren't taking any chances this year with folks who seem a little bit...'shady'. (my call was the girls were hookers or strippers and the guys were the RIO guests) There were lots of hookers around the RIO this trip...more than usual. (must be cuz of the conventions)

Without playing the slot machines, I'd sleep late instead of getting down on the floor early...wouldn't hit the casino until at least 8 or 9am. Now.....(I did play a few slots, lol)
For the length of time it took to sip down a double cappuccino, I'd sit at one of my old machines or one of their terrible video poker games and play until the coffee was gone then...HEAD FOR THE PALMS AND THE BETTER GAMING! I did fine this trip...only lost $300. the entire trip
and brought most of my money home for another 2 day quickie in October.

I ate at the World Buffet the first morning, and Kerry Simons (Simons Kitchen) over in PLAMS PLACE the other days. Did all my play at the PALMS, 8/5 Bonus and 9/7 Double Bonus were the best I could find over there...BUT IT SURE BEATS THE RIO BY A MILE and like I said, brought most of my money home and had good sessions!

I did one thing I haven't done in YEARS, and that was to eat at the RIO's Seafood Buffet...it was REAL GOOD. I don't even remember what I thought of it from years back other than the crowds...it was maybe a quarter full at 4:00 when they opened and didn't grow much while I was eating. Lots of selections, all on small trays and refreshed or changed a lot. Everything was hot/fresh and the variety was good. Lots of shell fish, salmon, mini lobster tails, crab, cod, bass, sushi, sashimi, chicken, BBQ, soups, DESSERTS and ice creams... ($39 bucks) but I'd found a $10. OFF coupon setting next to a GOLDFISH (how appropriatae, lol) slot machine that..........no one came to claim in the time I was there, so I put it to good use!

I used the Summer of Cirque ticket deals for Shows this trip. LOVE, MYSTERE, KA' and also checked out TRENT CARLINI's Elvis Show...'The King' in Shimmer Cabaret
    over at the LVHilton.

I'll consolidate all of 'em and put something up in the ENTERTAINMENT thread. Save or Carlini, I've posted on all these Shows before but there were a couple different things that happened this time (one unfortunate...)

Even with a convention in town, things were 'lite'. The lines were short (if there even was one...), traffic was thin and the cabs just whizzzed around looking for fares...IT WAS A GOOD TIME TO BE IN LAS VEGAS...but there just wasn't that much NEW,FUN, AND EXCITING going on sooooooo........OVER 'N OUT til October and VAN MORRISON, DONALD FAGEN, MICHALE McDONNALD, and BOZ SCAGS at the JOINT!

Looking forward to your report on McDonald, Fagen, and Scaggs. I'd love to see that show. Van Morrison is coming to my town next month and I thought about going until I read some reviews of his show. Sounds worse than Dylan in terms of playing obscure songs, not interacting with the crowd, etc.

    ty for the report

I always look forward to your show reviews.

If they offer the key lime pie at Simon's it is delicious. I was there one time and it was a special not on the menu item. I still remember that part of the meal.

Ya know SoCalDude, Morrison IS a lot like Dylan...you never know what
he's gonna do. He might be GREAT/He might be GUANO, lol but I'll take
    what I get.
AND HE HASN'T CHANGED! The first time I saw Van Morrison I was...14,15,16,?
'THEM' came to the Tri Cities in Eastern Washington State...stood right in front of
the band, played GLORIA, always kept his eyes closed, hardly smiled or talked...HASN'T
    CHANGED A BIT, LOL!

    Great Trip Report

I sampled the Seafood Buffet at Rio back in '98 on my first trip to Vegas......was only $20 then and great!!! Esspecially when, as a couple from Australia, we were only getting 58 cents on the dollar conversion rate!!

Can't wait fro my trip back there in November.....currently getting 0.95....so it's almast parable..

    Cheers, RICK
