Anyone here lucky enough to live along the path of totality?

    http://www.greatamericaneclipse.com/nation/

We've booked our flights but when we contacted hotels in Madras, Oregon to check availability they all said that they'd been sold out for that weekend for about 4 years! So we're picking up a CruiseAmerica RV in Portland and heading down to this......

It had better not be cloudy..........

I tried to make reservations in St Louis and KC 5 years ago, but nobody would do it. I may just fly somewhere, rent a car, and fly back the same day.

I will probably drive down from chicago some where and back or maybe do a night half way back with the boy.

I am super excited about this

We looked at that area as we have friends in Naperville. Carbondale Forest or somewhere just south of St Louis would work for you.

Yeah I was thinking that, doesn't need to be a giant deal or big party... hell a parking lot would work!

My home is about 90 miles north of totality line in Oregon. I'll find a way to get down south a bit and have the totality experience.

    Mikey70:
Madras is just on the other side of the Cascade mountain range from the Portland area. It's quite a site to go from the pine-tree clad Portland metro area to the desert scrub area that is Madras and Warm Springs. You'll be driving right past Mt Hood and the Timberline Lodge (unless you take some other less traveled scenic routes). Timberline is where they shot the outside shots of the hotel in The Shining.
BTW: There is a small Indian casino right near Madras called Indian Head. It is quite small but it's clean and right off Hwy 26.

    Here's a good eclipse site: http://eclipse2017.org/eclipse2017_main.htm

I'm already planning to be in Southern Illinois on that day. I have relatives that live there. The town of Makanda, IL near Giant City State Park is where the eclipse will last the longest.

The directions from the RV pick up point to Madras look really easy. It's just a right turn off 82nd Ave onto highway 26 and keep going.

Even Mrs Mikey could cope with navigating that :evillaugh:

It's been all over the local media here. I'm living less than 100 miles from Ground Zero, or whatever the correct term is.

We talked about going down to the Oregon Coast to see it, but I was worried about the unpredictability of the weather. Now that we've thought about it for so long, we're probably too late to get a hotel. Seems like most are sold out that are in the totality area.

I'd be wary of going too close to the coast because of the danger of cloud cover. We chose Madras purely on the basis of the likelihood of clear skies, even although we could have got 30 seconds longer of totality further east in Kentucky.

All it takes is one badly placed cloud and yer stuffed!

I agree, which is why I didn't make a reservation there last year. ;) I saw that Newport and Lincoln City are perfect, but cloud cover happens on the OR coast. My mom's in Boise, but that's too far south.

My husband loves to make last minute plans, so maybe I'll hand this over to him and he can worry about it next summer. :haha:

You could visit Mizzou on the first day of school. 2 min and 36 sec of total eclipse at 1:12pm. Hell, I might end up doing that myself.

I checked out Memphis hotels and they looked 90% booked. Nashville seems to be the same. It would be fun but I've seen a total eclipse. I don't know I want to travel to see another right now.

"The center line of totality" is one correct term.

A thought for those interested in central Oregon -- between Sisters, Redmond, Bend and Sunriver, there are hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of VRBO and related rentals. Madras is close. Roads might be a bit hinky but then just drive out toward Prineville or John Day.
