GOLDFISH, GOLDFISH, AND MORE GOLDFISH DEC 19-23 I won’t bore you with the details of getting to Vegas; everything was on time and we arrived a little lubricated and ready to have a good time. Saturday Dec 19 Ted from Presidential Limo was at the airport to meet us and with an ice cold bottle of sparkling wine (it’s really not champagne) and a long drive down the strip we arrived at Paris. Ted poured us out of the limo; we checked our bags and made it to check in. We made it to our room on the 31st floor and called to have our bags delivered. When the bags were delivered the bellhop asked us when was the last time we had stayed at the Paris. I said it was last summer (summer of 08). He said that the mini bar had one shelf cleared so that guests could use it for their own personal storage. It seems that there had been a lot of complaints from guests who had made room in the mini bar to store items and had been charged for everything they had moved. I guess customer complaints and a bad economy equal better customer service. After unpacking my wife and I headed to the casino. We have a slot strategy…yes, I know there’s no such thing as a strategy for playing slots. I never said it was a winning strategy; but, it is a strategy to minimize the amount of money we loose. My wife and I will play the same machine; we will put a 20 in and if we’re not hitting anything we cash out at 10 and put the ticket away. We cash that ticket in on the last day we’re in Vegas; that way we are always going home with some money. Now, we’re down on the casino floor and my wife is looking for a game to play and I’m doing my best Tiger Woods checking out the cocktail waitresses and the area they cover. As we all know cocktail service is hit or miss; but if you see how many are working and the area they cover you can figure out how long it will take you to get that first drink. We’ve been gambling for several hours drink service is ok; but we’re getting hungry. My wife really doesn’t feel like going anywhere to eat nor does she feel like standing in line anywhere; so, up to the room to order room service(this becomes our main source of food during our stay). We’ve got friends arriving from Seattle at 8pm and they’re staying at Bally’s so after eating we decide to head to Bally’s and do a little gambling and wait for them to arrive. My wife finds her favorite Goldfish game and we sit down and drop a 20 in. Now, I can see the main entrance from where we’re sitting and we’re close enough to the bar so that we won’t get missed by the cocktail waitress. An hour and a half passes and I’ve not seen our friends; we’re still playing on the same 20 and because I’m tipping 5 each time the cw comes around we are never without a drink. I ask my wife what time they’re supposed to arrive and she calls them on their cell. They’re at McCarran and are headed for baggage claim. I had arranged for a limo to pick them up as a surprise and told them to look for someone holding a sign with their name on it. They couldn’t find the driver and took a taxi to Bally’s. Later I found out I had the wrong flight information and the driver was waiting at the wrong carousel. Our friends are now with us and Bill decides he wants to look around a find a machine he wants to play. Cindy decides to play the Goldfish game right next to my wife. Now, she’s been playing on the same 20 for 2 hours. She got it up as high as 140 and it hasn’t gone under 60. Five hours into this slot marathon the cocktail waitress doesn’t even ask if we want another round she just brings us another round. Seven hours into the marathon we now have drinks lined up along the slot machine and the cocktail waitress is hovering. Eight hours into the marathon it’s 4am I’m drunk and tired I tell my wife I’m heading up to the room to crash. Put a fork in me I’m done. Forty five minutes later my wife comes up to the room. She tells me that after I left she started loosing so she quit. Finally tally for the marathon 8 hours 45 minutes playing the same slot machine on one 20 she cashed out with 127 profit; she put a whole bunch of points on the card, and we both should have attended an AA meeting afterwards. It was so bad that every time we sat in that area when the same cocktail waitress was working she didn’t even ask us what we wanted she just brought us a round. Sunday Dec 20 We had 10am reservations for the Sterling Brunch at Bally’s. When we checked in on Saturday we got a card for 10% off so for the four of us we saved $34. I was a little disappointed because they had changed the champagne that they had been serving there for years. They stopped serving Pierre Juilet and were serving Mumms. I had developed a taste for PJ so it wasn’t quite the same. My wife and her friend made a bee line for the lobster. In the past, they had served the lobster tail split in half still in the shell; but, now they were serving a whole 8oz lobster tail out of the shell. My wife and her friend both loved the lobster because it was broiled and it gave it a different flavor than the boiled/baked variety. I don’t know if we’ll do the Sterling Brunch again, at $85 it’s a little pricey and I think I’d like to try another Champagne Brunch to do a comparison. Once again they only had the steak house portion open for seating and we never saw the room full. We stayed there for 3 hours and we were never rushed to leave even after we had paid the check. After the brunch we headed back into the casino to gamble. I think between the two of us we lost $30. No marathon like the night before but we did play for several hours. I headed up to the room to check my football bet. I had done a 6 team parlay and wanted to see how I’d done. Everything was looking good until I saw the Seattle Tamp Bay score. WTF how do you loose to Tampa Bay at home? If there were any game that I thought was a lock it was that one. I should never bet football; this is the fourth time that I’ve taken a 6 team parlay to the 6th team only to loose it. Oh well time to find the wife and do some more team gambling. We find the Star Trek game and unfortunately Mr. Spock does not want us to “live long and prosper†so we move on. My wife finds her favorite Goldfish game at the Paris and we sit down hoping that our luck and the RNG gods are with us. C sits down in the machine next to my wife and the games and drinks are on. It takes about 30 minutes for our first drink; but, then the waitress is also covering the bar so we understand. It’s about 9pm and all of a sudden there’s loud music playing. Is there a band tonight? No, oh it’s DJ PJ. Well, that’s the name I gave her since she was spinning records and wearing a baby doll over a huge t-shirt. My wife and C notice that I seem to be staring at the DJ. I explain that I am neither staring nor gawking at her and that I’m just checking out the crowd; for some reason neither one of them believed me. Now, the music is good and the drinks are coming at a steady pace; but, it seems that we have to feed this Goldfish game every thirty minutes or so. So, we’re having all types of fun when the DJ starts spinning some 70s disco. Blame it on the alcohol, or the mesmerizing slot machines but I just couldn’t contain myself and started singing loudly to “Play that funky music white boy†and before I knew it I had others singing with me. Then YMCA was played; and, as everyone knows it’s the law that when YMCA is played you have to do Y M C A and everyone in our slot section was doing it. Well, after the music ended we played a little longer and decided to head up to the room it was around 2am and we were all a little worn out. Monday Dec 21 Woke up around 7am and watched a little ESPN just so I could relive the Seattle loss. When my wife woke up we decided to order breakfast. Thirty minutes later and we’ve got eggs, hash browns, sausage, toast, pastries and coffee. If there’s anything I miss the most when I leave Vegas it’s room service. After breakfast I decide to do a walk about and hit some of the other casinos. Didn’t do any gambling while I was out . I just didn’t feel like it. A little later on we head down to the casino to do a little gambling. We didn’t hit anything , in fact, we lost 30 pretty quickly so we decided to head to Le Burger Brassier for some much needed food. Now, we’re fueled up and ready to gamble so off to Bally’s to hit the machines. We sit down at a machine because my wife said it looked “prettyâ€. Hey, they’re slot machines what other reason do you need to sit down and play. We put in a 20 and start playing after a few small hits I look at the credits and tell my wife this doesn’t look right. Hum, what’s the problem? Oh, we’re playing a nickel machine. We’re up a few dollars so we figure we’ll stick to the plan and play it down to 10 and then cash out. Thirty minutes later we cash out at 67 and some nickels. We head over to the Goldfish games but someone is playing the one my wife’s favorite; so, we find another one close by and drop in a 20. We haven’t even been at the machine more than a couple of minutes when the cocktail waitress is over with drinks. I asked my wife if she ordered drinks and she said no; and, I knew I hadn’t ordered. The cocktail waitress just laughed and said you’re the couple from Saturday night I remembered what you drink. I didn’t know if I should be impressed or just saddened by the fact that we had become slot whores and we were known to all the waitresses. Well, after a few hours and multiple drinks we decided to head on over to the Paris so my wife could see if her very favorite Goldfish game was available. It was and down we sat. We played for hours and if you forget about the tips we broke even. I headed up to the room around 2am I just couldn’t hang any more. My wife and her friend were on a tare and were looking for penny machines to rob. Unfortunately, they were the ones to get robbed. The machines took everything they put and gave them nothing. My wife made it up to the room and decided to lick her wounds with room service; and, being the loving wife that she is she woke me up when it arrived. After eating I went back to sleep only to wake up a couple of hours later. Tuesday Dec 22So after waking up I make a cup of coffee and decide it’s time to play a little VP. I head down to Bally’s when the Mega millions slot machine is beckoning me. I figure hey, it’s gotta hit sometime so why not me and this time. I run a hundred through it and get a couple of small hits but nothing. Now I’m feeling like a fool I’ve dropped half my daily budget in 15 minutes time to see if the VP gods will be good to me. Well, they weren’t good but then they weren’t bad either. I didn’t hit any 4OAK or Rfs but I did hit enough 3OAK Full Houses and Flushes to keep me playing on 20 for three hours; when I finally cashed out I had only lost 10 dollars. I should have just ignored the Mega millions slot. I head over to the Bellagio to check out the conservatory and then walk over to City Center. I’m just not impressed too much concrete and no vibe. I walk through Aria. It seems busy. All the five dollar tables are packed and there are some people playing at the twenty five dollar tables. I was checking out the craps tables and there was one gentleman playing on a hundred dollar table and it looked as though he had close to 70G on the table. Too rich for my blood so I head to the BJ tables. I stop by a five dollar table that’s full; and, one of the players asks the dealer how much this all cost. The dealer told him 8.5 billion dollars and the player looked at him and asked how they expected to make that money back. The dealer told him by having him and his friends come and gamble and loose. My thoughts on Aria. I like the earth tones in the casino. The sports book is tiny. The casino doesn’t seem big enough to really help recoup all the money spent building City Center they must be counting on a lot of people playing at the $25 level and higher and, of course, selling all those condos. There just didn’t seem to be any vibe in the casino sort of like people were afraid to have fun. Well, after my tour of City Center I went back to the room to see how the wife was doing. Once in the room my wife is just finishing showering and we decide to grab something to eat. We head down to Le Burger. After a couple of burgers it’s time to gamble. Well, our Mojo just isn’t working we’re putting 20s in and cashing out at 10 with little to show for it except good drink service. After doing the hit and run at Paris for a couple of hours we head to Bally’s. No Love at Bally’s. We look at each other and my wife says why don’t we head up to the room and order room service. That sounded like a hell of a good plan. We get up to the room and look at the time. It’s only 9pm WTF. Oh, well, we ordered room service and settled in for the night. Wednesday, Dec 23 Our Last Day in VegasWe get up early and pack and call to have our bags picked up and held until we leave. Now, my wife and I know better than to gamble on our last day, we know better but we do it anyway. We head down to Bally’s and my wife says she’d like a drink so I tell her at this time of the morning the best place for that is the bar. So we amble up to the bar and we each put 20 in to play VP and order drinks. We each loose 20 and decide to head to Paris and play there. We go to bar and start playing VP. I forgot to tell my wife that there are multiple denominations that you can play so you have to check to see what it’s set on because you could be playing at the level of the last person to play. We each put 20 in our respective machines and the drinks arrive. After one hand my wife looks over to me and says something is wrong with her machine. She said she put a 20 in it and after one hand she’s got no credits. I look over and she was playing at the five dollar level and playing max bet. I point that out to her and she says this is why she doesn’t play VP. Okay, it’s no different than some of the slot machines that have multiple denomination choices. Well, we continue to play VP. Hey, don’t judge, the drinks are good and are coming fast. We each blow through a hundred and decide that we should get something to take with us to eat ; so, of to the deli in Bally’s. Now it’s finally time to leave we head back to Paris and get the bags and get them and us loaded into the limo. Ted, our driver, decided to bring another bottle of sparkling wine and asked if we would like him to open it. Hey, we’re already good and loaded so why stop now. Well, that brings to an end another great Vegas trip. We didn’t leave as winners, but we never do. We only lost 500 between the two of us and that’s not too bad. We will be back in our happy place June 19th. We’ve already got the airfare taken care of now we’re just waiting on the offers.
