I don't need a comparison but some help planning!

I'm taking my son and his gf to Vegas 5/20 - 5/26 for their college graduation present. They have never been to Vegas. I've only been once. She is actually flying home 5/24 and he and I are staying 2 more days.

She wants to stay downtown and he wants to stay at the Flamingo. I actually think she will like the strip better and he will love downtown, but we'll see. There is a Memorial Day weekend concert in Fremont on 5/25.

Which hotel first and any advice on how I should split the days?

One more thing - Rush tower is not available for 3 ppl. - it will have to be the Gold tower to accomodate three.

Ms. Pac, my .02 cents. Either way you are going to get stuck with high rates during the holiday weekend.
*Plus and minus staying downtown for the first leg depends upon your perspective. If you stay downtown during the early part of the week crowds are going to be far lighter and prices are going to be cheap enough that you could (could) consider booking two rooms at the Nugget. I have been on Fremont during a big concert and crowds are INSANE, you cannot walk around and you are limited to jumping in-out of casinos to drink/gamble or whaterver. They set up barriers and keep you within walking lanes, hate it! However, if you enjoy that huge street party atmosphere, have at it.
*All Strip pools are going to be jammed that weekend but your son and his GF might want to go to one of the day parties on the strip. I am not a huge fan of Flamingo and the pool will be a mess that weekend. Also consider the Quad construction going on in the area and I think you might want to guide them to TI, Tropicana or one of the other value Strip properties.

Thank you xmark. Good to know about the barricades. Neither one is interested in the pool parties or concert. I'll start with GN and end with Flamingo.

Cost isn't a factor - both hotels will be around $95/night (I know rates are high that week). I suggested Mandalay Bay or Signature MGM and they said no....They picked those hotels/area based on their friends recommendations.

They also want to take a helicopter ride to the Grand Canyon. Do those tours pick up at either hotel?

We've been on a lot of cruises and they love playing roulette so that's probably what they'll be doing most of the time.

I will let the others weigh in on helicopter rides as I have never taken one. If they are interested in roulette have them walk a short distance north to Casino Royal, low minimums and cheap beer/drinks

I get the feeling that young people will probably tire of the downtown area quicker than they will of the strip. I would probably go with downtown for the weekend nights and do the strip for the rest. I think two nights downtown would be enough for me and I love it down there.

So much more to see and do on the strip

    Casino Royal - check!

I'm all booked. I decided on the GN for the first 2 nights (Mon-Tues) because of that concert downtown on Saturday and we can just take that WAX bus from the airport.

Flamingo on the last 4 night (2 nights for her). BTW - Flamingo has a 15% off 3 nights code IFHL3 but they are also offering 25% off 4 nights IFHL4 and 35% off 5 nights IFHL5. I got a GO deluxe room.

I bought them the 6 drink vouchers for TI and the Mirage from travelzoo and got the 2 for 1 Hash House coupon from FB thanks to this messageboard!

Only the helicopter ride left to book. They are all sold out for May for the fly overs but the landing flights are still available.

I see there is a Dunkin Donuts DT. I like their coffee. Any good coffee near the Flamingo? I'm not really a fan of SBUX.

We are going that same weekend and are doing GN & Bally's (usually we do GN & Flamingo) - GN for the first nigth then move it to the strip.

You can do 3 in the rush tower. They have VERY FEW rooms with 2 queens...but won't guarantee one. We have always got 2 queen beds, but stay there on a Wednesday night - so demand may not be as high.

Thanks Donny - I called GN's 800 number about 2 queens and they said none existed unless I wanted a suite. I'm glad to know that they do exist. I think I'll just ask when we get there - then they will know their inventory.

Flamingo has a Java Detour in the hotel. Harrah's has a $$$tarbucks, Casino Royal has a Cinnabon (sp) and I do like their coffee.

I'm usually up way too early because of the time difference so I'll need coffee. I was sick my first trip to Vegas and hardly have any memories but I do remember they had a great little coffee kiosk at Excaliber.

I'll read thru a lot of threads now and can see why the kids picked those hotels...infinity pool at GN and hot but approachable girls at the Flamingo pool. I have a feeling they'll be showing me the ropes from all the info their friends gave them.

The helicopter flights -- my brother and his wife did this on our trip two weekends ago. It ran between $400 and $500 per person. I'm finding out now if it picked them up at the hotel or if they had to cab it somewhere. Will let you know.

Edit: They picked him up at the hotel and stopped at 2 other hotels as well.

    No problem.

I think there is about 1 2 queen room on every floor...so not many. The last 3 years we have been there we have got a 2 queen room - we checked in on a Wednesday before Canadian May long weekend.

I found the coffee stand in Flamingo by the elevators to be expensive. Harrahs have Starbucks where you can get a plain coffee for 2 bucks. That same plain coffee at the coffee stand by the elevators in Flamingo was 4 bucks and change.

There is a cheaper place for coffee in the Flamingo.

Were you talking about the place that is by Sin City Brewing?

The cheaper place is (dang...can't remember) closer to the Patry Pit area?

It depends what you are looking for.

If you are into the club scene, the clubs on the strip are much more fun on the weekend. They will be packed (which also means long lines) But if that is what hey are looking for, I would go downtown early in the week and head to the strip for the weekend.

I am much more into the gambling - and primarily lower limit ($10 craps) gaming. I recently spent Tuesday through Thursday night on the strip at Planet HO. There was still a lot of partying, but the table minimums were still reasonable. Then I checked into the Golden Nugget on Friday morning. I enjoyed the pool and the weekend scene dowtown and could sill find cheaper tables compared to the $15 and higher I would have found on the strip
