    My Trip Report

Glad to be in Vegas Again - Part 1 And Part 2

I had a "surprise" surgery in early October which put my trip in doubt. I actually didn't get the go ahead till the day before. For some reason it made the trip a "freebie" since I wasn't sure I would be able to go. We left home at 4AM for a 6AM flight on United. Left on time and had a smooth transfer in O'Hare. I was going to use mileage for this trip but we got a really low fare of $250 so I bought the trickets instead. I fly a lot on business and it always bothered me to pay cash for food or drink. I'm happy that United went to a "no cash" policy. They scan your credit card for any food and alcohol purchases. No searching for correct change. People seemed to really like it, I know I did.

We stay at either the Flamingo, Caesars or Harrah;s depending on what we are doing. This time we stayed at Harrah's since my wife was going to play in the Halloween slot tournament. We arrived at Diamond check in at 10:45 not expecting them to have a room for us just yet. But our room was ready. We got room 3356 which was a really nice suite. It had a separate sitting room with a flat screen TV, sofa, 2 easy chairs, a hidden fridge, a coffee maker, separte bar and sink area. The bathroom had both a jacuzzi tub and a shower unit, which was located in a separate bathroom area. The double sink was nice, but we are generally showering hours apart as you will see later. We got unpacked and headed down for some play! For some reason, even after over 200 trips I hit town like a wild man. My goal in the first 24 hours is to survive and not lose too much of my bankroll. I promised myself that I would not play the slots or even VP till at least the second day, so I made a beeline to the Flamingo sportsbook to get down on the World Series which was starting that night. I generally gamble on a $1,000/ day budget, but I have been known to go over that limit on occasion......like every single day some trips! I nabed a racing form and sat down to kill some time playing the horses. I am a life long horse player and it still my favorite form of gambling. I stuck to the east coast tracks and caught the late races from Aqueduct and Churchill. I also made a $400 bet on the Yankees to win the series. I hope to collect on that bet after tonight! My wife stopped by knowing exactly where to find me. I like the Flamingo sportsbook, it is just the right size for me and brings back memories of the Stardust book. We went across the street to Serendipity 3 for lunch. My wife had a cupon for 2 of those frozen hot chocolates, but after a burger we knew we wouldn't each be able to finish one, so we gave the second one to college age girls at the next table. They had no trouble polishing it off. We managed, but it left me really full after that burger and I am a big eater!

We spent the afternoon apart at Harrah's. She was playing her favorite slots, and I was trying to stay on today's budget. My wife's standing joke in Vegas is to ask me which days money I am spending. When I ran into her mid afternoon she asked me are you into the weekend stash yet? I usually respond with a laugh and a profanity or two. I played some BJ, mostly $25 and $50 hands, with an occasional double here and there. We got up at 3AM east coast time, so I was already starting to drag by dinner time. We decided to eat in the coffe shop. I went for a lobster salad and some soup. I broke my first day rule and played some $1 VP after dinnner and managed to slide 4 hundred dollar bills through with little return. I was in bed by 9! I was still a little worn out form the surgery and decided not to push it too hard. At the end of the day I stayed on budget by "only" losing $600 plus I had made the Yankee bet.

I was wide awake around 3AM. I layed in bed for hours and looked at the clock again to see it was now 3:15. I got up and went into the living room area which had a door to close it off from the sleeping area. Past experience told me my wife wouldn't be up for a few hours at least. I made a pot of coffee and watched sportscenter with all the replays of that nights game which the Yankees lost. I was pretty sure I was going to make another bet on them to win the Series, this time with better odds to win the series. Around 4, I took a shower and got ready for the day. I was downstairs around 4:30. So now what? In many past trips I have found myself down a few hundred before breakfast, which is not a good way to start the day. I don't bother trying to fight myself. I get all hyped up in Vegas and sleep is impossible for me some nights. I decided that I would low play some BJ for a while. I managed to drop a quick hundred playing 22 at $10 hand. Believe me its is not easy to bust nearly every hand, but I managed it. I decided I could do no better so I may as well head back to the room and wait for my wife to get up. Then I spotted this game I had only heard about till now.....Wolf Run, but with 4 screens on one game. At a buck a game it is a $4/spin game, but you can play it at $2 a spin if you like. I decided it was a lucky game and took a stab with $4/spin. It quickly ate a $20 and then a hundred, so I decided it wasn't so lucky and again started to the room. I passed an identical game and decided to give it one more hundred to prove it was worthy of stealing me blind in the future. I dropped in a hundred and second game the Wolfs came running for $800. I cashed it out and this time did make it to the room. My wife was up and showering and it was only 7:30 so it looks like breakfast is right around the corner! Around 8:00 we headed over the Mon Ami Gambi for breakfast. they only began to do breakfast in the last few months and I think it is a great value. Coffee shop prices in a much nicer atmosphere and with better service. It was still chilly outside so we sat inside but next to the window. I have steak and eggs almost every morning in Vegas and this was no exception. My wife had crepes, both of use were happy with our meal. You do have to charge it to your room since for some reason they won't accept a direct deduction from your HET credits, but we knew this from past experience. My wife walked me back to the Flamingo sportsbook where I settled in for some more horse play. I did again bet the Yanks to win the series for another $400. I did well on the horses on this day. I am mostly a "horizontal" bettor, playing doubles and the pick 3s and 4s. I caught a signer pick 4 for a little over $1,800 and a pick 3 for $500.

We typically never eat lunch in Vegas, a big breakfast carries us till dinner so I had no commitments till dinner. I decided To call my wife so we could spend some time together stealing money from the slot machines.....well, that was the plan any how. I played near her all afternoon with a little luck here and there. I was getting frustrated mostly because I hadn't had a cigarette since the operation 3 weeks before. As a long time smoker it was not going to be an easy week for me! After dropping a $20 in a machine I told my wife I was going to move 2 banks over to try another machine. She had just loaded in a $20 so I knew she was going to be playing for a bit. As I made my second spin, a guy sat next to me and took out his pack asking "do you mind". I said no go right ahead...he then said "you want one?" I didn't hesitate for a second and said YES!! I got a light, took a drag and felt light headed, but so happy....I was smoking in Vegas and all was right with the world. I took a second drag and my wife walked around the corner as I was in mid drag. She gave me that look that only a wife can and said "your such an asshole!" I spent the rest of the afternoon promising that was my last smoke. I actually did very well. I did have 2 other smokes during the trip, but luckily never got caught!! We had dinner that night at the Range. It is my wife's favorite place so the mood improved a lot. I had made a few parlays using the Yanks with some basketball games, so we went to the sportsbook to watch some of the game. We kind of worked in and out of the sports book over the next few hours as we played a variety of table games and VP. Over the course of the day I came out around $2,000 ahead so all was well!

Since I started Friday the same way as Thurs, I guess it is now a routine. Up early, coffee in the living room, then down early for some play while my wife sleeps. I again started with some $10 BJ, but this time had some reasonable luck and ran it up to $500, gradually increasing my bets to $50/hand. I quickly lost that and another $400 playing $1 and $5 VP. I made a vow to stay away from any HET VP games for serious money. The pay tables just don't warrant any serious play, but some of it was stupidity on my part for chasing those silly versions like Double double bonus and dueces wild. My wife called me for breakfast before any further damage was done. We ate in the Harrah's coffee shop since it was getting close to post time for the east coast tracks. After breakfast I headed over to my usual seat in the Flamingo sports book. I saw a horse I really liked at Aqueduct that was listed at 8-1 in the morning line. I decided I was going to pound it with wheels in the pick 3 and doubles. As it turned out the horse did win, but the payoff was not as good as I hoped since he was bet down to 3-1 by post time. I still had a decent day with the ponies and also made a few bets on basketball for later that night. My wife and I went up the the ballroom to register her for the slot tournament that was going to be played on Sat ans Sun. The tournament was not as good as previous years. There was not even a banquet dinner after the last session. It did have a good prize structure though. It started out with a $25K top prize and it was raised to a $33K grand prize when the turnout was better than expected. We got her signed up for a 12:30 session on both days. We also picked up our gift which was a Caesars package with blanket, pillow and sleeping mask all with the Caesars logo. It was of decent quality, but not something we would buy. We did a little slot play that afternoon and then changed for dinner at Rao's. I love this place! I have eaten at the original place in NYC and this is every bit as good. Caesars was smart to pull them in. We played some VP and slots in Caesars and then took a walk over to the Bellagio to watch the fountain show. We stayed for 3 of them as we generally do. It was a nice night for a walk and we took the slow way back, making the HET trek through Paris, Ballys, the Flamingo with a little play in each one. By the time we made it back to Harrah's it was 3 AM. I have no idea where the time went....it always amazes me. I finished the day with a quick check of scores in the sportsbook. Won one of my parlays for $700. I finished the day ahead $500.

    Last 3 days to come........

It's funny seeing guys get caught by their wives when they're smoking.

I was at a conference in San Diego once, and this guy grabbed a cigarette from me (this was around 1:30 that morning) and started smoking it while a bunch of us from the conference were outside smoking(we closed the hotel bar down). His back was to the door, and after about 4 puffs in, the door opened, and I swear this guy jumped 10 feet in the air thinking that was his wife coming out. He put his cigarette out, said a few words and went to find some mints..lol

Looking forward to the rest of the report.

Enjoying the read so far. Those mornings when you start down heavy and quick do suck, but it is such a good feeling when you decide to go for it one more time and you recover your losses and then some. I've had an almost identical morning at the Flamingo, except it was Megabucks that rescued me for $600.

Glad to be in Vegas- Part one and Part 2

Saturday AM I continued my routine. Down early for some play but this time I decided to stick to JOB VP. Easy game right? Can't get hurt too bad right? Well, after $500 went through I decided this wasn't much fun at all. I grabbed a sheet for the college football games and headed back to the room to study the line. I had one of those refelctive moments where I realized I was a lucky guy. Here I am sitting in the place I love to vacation most, doing all the things I love most, with the person I love the most.

My wife was stiring in the other room so I knew breakfast was around the corner. I had decided that Notre Dame was giving up too many points at -29 and that Syracuse even at +15 was a good bet against. The sportsbooks get crazy on football weekends so I wanted to lay out all my parlays now. I took my 2 key teams, parlayed them together and then spread them around in several other parlays. My wife also like to bet football, but she would put hers in later, I hit the Harrah's sportsbook then we headed over to Paris and Mon Ami Gambi. It was a little warmer so we ate outside. It was comfortable with plenty of coffee and hot tea for her. I again had my steak and eggs and she had a waffle thingie that looked like a desert. She walked me over to the Flamingo sportsbook where I had a seat reserved. On the weekends the sportsbooks fill up with folks just wanting to watch football. They are happy to reserve a seat for a serious horse player, and even keep a window open just for horse bets. For me it is heaven. Horse races in front of me, to my right all the football games are going on.....a degenerates paradise! I had a horrible day with the horses...easily dropped $700 without cashing more than one or two tickets. I started to head back to Harrah's when my phone rang. My wife reminding me I was to meet her at 12:15 since her first slot session was at 12:40. I assured her I hadn't forgotten and was on my way...even though I had completly forgotten!

The ballroom was decorated for Halloween and many people were in costume....at least I hope they were costumes! My wife had machine 17 and was really pumped. She caught a good one registering a little over 13,000 credits and ended up in 104th position after the first round. If she could remain in the top 250 places she would win $175 in slot play and top 50 would be $375. We headed out to play some slots and celebrate her good fortune. I kind of hung around her machines playing a variety of nickel and penny machines. I was getting pissed at losing while playing "pennies and nickels" and really wanted a cigarette, but I managed to hold off with a wad of Nicorette gum that had me looking like a baseball player. I was easily down $400 or so when I finally hit a magical bonus round....10 free spins....here we go!!......I won exactly 45 cents!! Thats right....$2 bet, 10 free spins and I get 45 cents?? I wanted to call the cops, the FBI, the CIA, hell bring in the Marines!! I popped in another piece of Nicorette gum and stormed off to play BJ. I jumped around between $25 and $100 bets, with occasional double downs at each level. For the session I ended up down $200, but it always felt "good"....it just never turned out that way!

By the way, in case you haven't noticed it by now, I gamble in "sessions". Usually 2-4 hours, but each session is tracked as a separate event. I know its impossible to win each session, but I hope to acheive some balance over the course of the week playing things I enjoy while minimizing exposure to each game to 2-4 hours. It works for me.....but you have to be willing to cut a session short if you are getting killed.

We called out casino host to say hello. He stopped by within 5 minutes. I really like the guy, I know he is paid to be friendly but he is really easy to talk to and always goes out of his way to make each stay fun. He asked where we were having dinner. It was then I realized it was Saturday night, 6PM and I hadn't made reservations anywhere. When I told he he suggusted the 46 over at the Flamingo. He made a call, and we were set for 7:00, good thing as the place was busy. We had a great dinner which was made even better when we founf out he had picked up the tab. I left $50 for the wait staff and we hit the Flamingo floor to celebrate. Up till now I had avoided Super Times Pay, mostly because the game has been a curse to me for the past several trips. I decided to give it one more chance....big mistake! Within 30 minutes I dropped $700 on 2 different machines. I found my wife and we headed back to Harrah's. I was pissed not for losing, but for trying to win at a game that has continued to beat me. Forget odds, payout tables, RNG and the rest of the statistical crap...some games are just not intended for you. Super Times Pay is off my list of fun things to do....at least for this trip. I was starting to drag, but my wife was still wired from her slot tournament. She kept saying....suppose I hit that magical machine that turns out 19,000 points? Did I tell you they upped the top prize to $33,000?
Yes, babe...you told me....this makes 178 times you told me. But there was no stemming her joy...so I decided to call it an early night after a decent nightcap. We headed to the bar for some VP and a drink. Prices in Vegas have really skyrocketed. I had 2 vodka martinis, my wife had 2 pina coladas and they cost me $600. Can't beat those free drinks in Vegas. All in all not a bad day....had way too much to eat and drink and after many, many hours of gaming I had only lost $300, mostly due to my football bets coming through.

Sunday morning I slept in.....didn't wake up till 7! Almost a record for me. My wife was already up and talking about her last session in the slot tournament.....they had raised the grand prize you know. We stopped by the sportsbook for the pro football line and headed over the the cafe for breakfast. Yea, I had steak and eggs again....its tradition, like getting my ass kicked on super times pay.

I layed out my strategy for pro football. I won't go over it since I got my head handed to me on my football bets for today. $750 went out,.....nothing came back. I took my usual position in the Flamingo sportsbook to bet the horses and got more of the same.....another beating of $500 on the horses. I looked at the bright side and told my self that I hadn't lost anything before breakfast....so I'm really ahead right? And I'm actually still ahead for the trip right? SO....I went to get some of the money I had not lost...that I could have lost, but didn't. No matter how many excuses I came up with, it was still a losers walk back to Harrah's. I stopped up to the safe to refill. logged onto my laptop to check on some work related email, and called into the office to make sure there were no disasters back home. Refreshed and reloaded I went off to find my wife....it was the last session today,,,,and it seems they had raised the top prize. She again had a 12:40 session so we headed up to have a coke and wait for her session. She was on machine number 24 today. Would it be a lucky machine? I was hoping so because she was having a ball with this. She managed to crank out close to 14,000 points in her session. She was having visions of the grand prize, when I reminded her the leaders after the first round were miles ahead of her. I gave her a more realistic goal of pulling into the top 50 and getting $375 in slot dollars. But we would have to wait till 8 PM to get the final rankings! this was going to be a long day.....for me! I thought getting a drink in her would be a good idea at this point. We headed to the bar with the expensive drinks.....I was careful this time to sit at quarter machines. I know....brilliant man has to lose $600 to be taught his lesson. Of course this one backfired when I hit a Royal for "only" $1,000!! I was still very happy now that a total of 6 drinks had actually put me $400 ahead. My wife was really flying now so off we went to play osme of her games. She hit a bonus round immedialty that paid off close to $150 for a dollar bet. I got the Wolves Running again when 2 of the 4 games went into the bonus round at the same time. I hadn't even noticed it. The first bonus round paid off $120 in 5 spins, then the second one came right up and I got another $80. I almost cashed out but decided to hit it a few more times when the wolves came running across the screen for another $400. I told my wife we are making a donation to the "save the wolves" fondation when we get home. As usual, I pushed too hard and found an identical 4 play wolf machine so I could give back $100. I guess I will consider that my donation to the save the wolves foundation. We had dinner again at the Range...it is my wife's favorite place and it is her day....they raised the grand prize you know. After dinner I had to run to keep up with her to check the scores. Thety were a ton of people crowded around the board so I suggusted she just get in line and be surprised by what they pay her....no way. She squeezed her way through and came back with a big smile on her face.....$375! Happy lady, happy husband. I got in line to collect for her sine it was in my name. They gave us a slip, which of course had to be taken to the cage.....where they would be happy to give you the money in any amounts you wanted. So she decided on 3 hundreds, one 50, one 20, and one 5.....don't ask, that is how she wanted it. They way these work is you have to play the amount on the ticket, then you get to keep anything left. She decided dollar VP and quarter spin poker would be her plays. She did great and managed a return of $360 for her play. And that money she could do with as she pleased. I wouldn't find out that answer till Monday, but I knew it involved the forum shops! We low played the rest of the night and were in bed by 1AM....another long but fun day. I ended up losing $200 for the day, even with the Royal....how did I manage that?

Monday I was up early again. I had my coffee, read the paper and headed down for an early session that started at 6. I stuck to BJ and managed to finish up a couple of hundred. Not bad before breakfast and much better than a beating. I collected my wife and we headed over to Mon Ami Gambi for our third breakfast of the trip. It was again warm enough to eat outside. I think this is a habit we will continue for many trips. It is just a pleasant place to relax over breakfast. People are not yet frenzied ( drunk) so even the people watching is relaxed. No fountain show....but we fixed that by making a reservation for dinner that evening. Oh yea...I did have steak and eggs again. My wife had something "girly" like yogurt.

Monday is not a good day for horse players, most of the major tracks are dark so I passed my usual seat at the Flamingo sportsbook. I did make a $600 bet on the Yanks that night back at Harrah's, for my only sports betting of the day. I couldn't face my wife's penny machines, so I headed off to play dollar VP instead.

It is still only 11AM. I sat at a 5 play machine and load in 4 hundreds hoping for a decent score. I was about 3 plays in when a knock out blonde sits next to me. That can only mean one thing hooker! Oh.....the surgery. I need to explain it a bit before I can finish this story. During a routine physical my doctor didn't like the sound of my carotid artery. She thought it may be restricted, so she sent me for a sonogram that afternoon. Turns out she was right, but it was not restricted it was practically closed. They figured 95 to 99% closed. The next morning I went for surgery. They opened my neck from behind the ear to my collar bone. They put in a tempory bypass and then opened the vein to clean it out. Sewed up the vein, removed the bypass and then closed up the neck with surgical glue. So I had a fast healing, but still pretty nasty incision on the left side of my neck since the surgery was just 3 weeks prior. Anyhow, the hooker looks at me and asks what happened. After I told her, she thinks for a second and says....I know how to make you feel better baby! For some reason, that just struck me so funny. I started laughing...not laughing I was roaring...so loud she decided to leave! Anyhow.....I lost the $400, but the laugh was worth that much alone! I went back to find my wife in "pennyheaven". We played a bit together and I hit the wolves for another $200 profit. I had a pretty good guess the day before about the Forum shops because that was our next stop. I was guessing a coach purse, but to my surprise we went to the Tommy Bahama store where she picked up the 2 shirts she had already bought for me! Now that is a great broad, no wonder I love her. After that I demanded she go to the coach store with me so I could return the favor....wait a minute...how did she manage this? Ahh....she is worth every penny. I "made" her find something she liked and we were both happy.......its a good thing when that happens. We headed to our room to drop off the purchases.

We walked up the strip and took a look at the conservatory at the Bellagio. We played a couple of machines on the walk through, which would be the only gambling we did in a non HET casino. I always figure I can lose my money anyplace, but losing it one place does me the most good. I have used that philosophy for over 200 trips and it has done right by me for the most part. We watched a couple of the fountain shows and made our way across the street to Paris. We played there for a bit before our dinner at Mon Ami Gambi. It was still warm, so we sat outside. A really pleasant way to spend the last evening in town. We kind of went over the trip and declared it a success....lol. We never include gambling numbers in our analysis. Winning is always nice, but if that is mandatory for you to have fun in Vegas, its time to stop going. Its about fun, not money for us....and we had a ton of fun. We played out way home, stopping at Bally's and the Flamingo before reaching Harrah's at 2AM. The Yanks not only won that night, but last night they wrapped up the series. Monday was a low play day for me, but I managed to lose a total of $400.

Overall for the trip I finished up a little over $1,000, close to $2,500 after the series ended so it was a good trip gambling wise. Our only other cash outlay was for a cab to and from our hotel and for tips. The room and all meals were comped and not even deducted from out Harrah's reward credits.

But it would have been a good trip even had I lost....it was a "gift" trip since I wasn't sure I would be able to go. Not only did I go, I managed to do everything I wanted to and felt great while doing it. Next trip will be in March to cooincide with the NCAA basketball playoffs.

Awesome TR!!! Glad you were able to go. I think you said it perfectly when you said to go for fun and not to win. Thanks for posting.

    U r awake at 3:30 AM because

IN chicago it is 5:30 AM.

Enjoyed the report. I like the rooms with the separate TV room from the bedroom.

I am always up early, but I go to bed early in Las Vegas. Most of the time I am in bed by 11 PM although I can push it to 1 AM Vegas time. But 1 AM Vegas time I am dragging.

When my friends come out they know that in the morning I will already be awake, had breakfast, walked around the strip, and done some of goofy touristy things that I always do.

I also organize any thing that needs to be done so everyone else can have fun without worrying about the details.

I play the ponies a little but I am strictly a formula bettor on those, no exotics. I never do a bet to win, I bet place or show only. I do not win big, but I win a little and entertain myself while I am figuring out my true bets on football.
