In another blow to Milwaukee's declining level of air service, Frontier Airlines said Monday it will cut 11 flights out of Mitchell International Airport and furlough about 125 employees, effective June 1.

Last May, Frontier had 86 daily flights out of Mitchell. The latest cuts will leave just seven.

I sure miss Midwest, the airline they acquired. Now watch SWA raise prices since Frontier was the only other airline flying nonstop Vegas and other popular destinations.

Frontier needs to survive long enough to get me back from Las Vegas on October 2nd.

Not that I am pimping my own blog, but...

Couldn't agree more. I used to love taking Midwest Airlines whenever I had to go anywhere. But now, the competition is gone and I am really afraid that SW fares will go higher to a lot of nonstop destinations such as Orlando and Las Vegas. I live just south of Green Bay, and GRB and ATW are always saying how great the fares are out of their airprots but ith a connectin. Hey, if it ws only $40-$60 more roundtrip I would do it. But, if I price a flight to Vegas, I'm loking at upwards of $400. EVen though it is a lot easier to drive to GRB or ATW, I'd rather just drive to MKE.

With Midwest it was great, good flight times, a staff willing to help you out either in person or by phone and those damn chocolate chip cookies that were so good.

I've flown Frontier a few times after the merger and before Southwest was here and have to say that I had no issues with them.

The answer to this is simple: Bring back Midwest Airlines, the Best Care in the Air.

Thank you for this note! I have a flight credit with Frontier I need to use. :( Crap, just like casinos, every time I fall in love with an airline, they go belly up (well not yet). I love Frontier!

Southwest still has to compete with AirTran out of MKE.

Midwest was on weak legs, and then Southwest and AirTran came into town and really did them in.

Midwest's weak legs happened in 2007-08 when fuel prices spiked and they didn't have proper fuel hedging contracts. Other carriers did, saw Midwest was weak and pounced.

Southwest owns AirTran and once operations are fully merged, only one name or the other will remain in Milwaukee... likely Southwest. SW/AT's only real competition now is Delta and "the field" (and MKE is not a Delta hub, so unless you we are flying to Minneapolis, there are no direct flights).

Totally forgot about AirTran. I guess because some travel days they have only one non-stop per day to LAS and other days, they have none. We try and avoid connecting flights anytime we can.

Also, they charge for luggage, so does Frontier.

    Thank you!

Not to thread hijack, but I started that blog about five years ago when I had something to say... before Twitter and Facebook. Now I keep it up mainly for Vegas trip reports and because I've talked my way into getting press passes from a couple of local sports teams (I can't get the Packers to return my calls, though. :rolleyes2:) But every once in a while I find a topic worthy of some long-form rambling.
