    My Trip Report

We are coming out for the Lady Luck gymnastics invitational @ South Point Hotel & Casino. I was a bit hesitant about taking the whole family out to Las Vegas as when I think LV, I think more of a place to go to get away from the kids! However, there are plenty of things to do and with the Gymnastics meet going on, there will be a lot of kids there that weekend.

I say 7 + 2 as I am a family of 7 and MIL & FIL are coming with. My kids are 13yo DD, 10yo DD, 8yo DS, 2yo DD, 9mo DD. My brother and his partner will be driving in from San Diego, so I guess 7 + 4.

Where Staying: Grandview Resort (right next to South Point)
    Arrive: Thursday January 17, 2013
    Depart: Tuesday January 22, 2013

    Maybe I should pack shorts!?!

    Flight Plans

    Day 1: Thursday January 17, 2013
Thursday morning, all the kids are off to school, out-off-office notice is on and office voice mail is all set, in-laws are on their way (4.5 hour drive to us). DW and I wrap up packing, get the dog to the boarder, do the dishes, take out the trash, feed/water cats...I am ready to go. Picked the kids up at 12pm, MIL & FIL are here, I load up the van - the 11 of us are on the way to the airport.

    Flight Plans:
We left early to the airport due to UA changed the plane and we lost our seats. Plus not rushed to get through security. We did not take a direct flight due to cost savings. $450 - $550/person direct x 8 or $225.20/ea x 8 ($1801.60) to SFO then LAS....I'll take the longer travel day, yeah, even with 5 kids.

45 min drive to MSP, check a bag, easy through security lines, even with the kidlets. We get to the gate and I talk to the attendant. She took our tickets and said she will rearrange the seating as they had originally put a 2yo between two strangers! Attendants are being helpful. We went and at lunch and when came back, they had us grouped together pretty well.

DW, baby, 2yo and myself together and my 8yo son next to us in the middle by 2 nice guys. They both had sons; one had 9yo; other had 7yo. DS had nice trip chatting with these two. Funny thing is the guy across the isle from me was one of my customers. I did not personally know him, but he used my equipment - I'm always running in to people I know. MIL & FIL were paired up with my 2 oldest DDs.

Flight to SFO went well; lil ones napped. I get off the plane and have a stroller but no infant carrier. I had the guy check and he said "They either moved it over to the other plane or left it in MSP." I'm getting worried. We get to the new gate and check in as they need to rearrange our seats there as well. I asked the attendant to check for the infant carrier. They could not find it. The flight attendants came and spoke to us when we were seated and said they could not find it and to go to the LAS claims counter and "give them hell" if it did get lost.

When it was time to depart SFO, the plane broke. I call the limo service and let them know and to grab an infant seat just to be safe. After an hour, the said "this plane is done for the night" and we got off and on to a different plane. We walk over to the new plane, board, and depart. We arrive in LAS 1.5 hours late, but kids are still good. 2yo is sleeping. I carry her off the plan and the limo driver is there. Kids have no idea yet. We get to baggage claim and THANK YOU there is the infant carrier. They wrapped it in a plastic bag - probably one of the reasons why they said they could not find it in SFO.

Limo Ride - The Strip Tour
As soon as we leave the baggage claim and go out side, my 2yo DD wakes up and starts chatting up a storm to me. We all get in the super stretched limo and I told the driver to take us up the strip to the Stratosphere and back down then to hotel. While it was 12am in LAS, and what is 2am MN time, the kids were still doing great. My 2yo DD was all excited looking at all the lights.

So when we pull up to the first stop light on the strip, a advertisement truck pulls up right next to us. And what do we see staring at us? 3 butts in thongs - yep, just my luck, a Girls - Girls - Girls truck. So I had to explain to the kids about advertisements vehicles, but not about what service was being offered. We make it up/down and MIL & FIL were surprised how busy it was at 12am on a Thursday night. I told them there was the Sportsman show and Adult Entertainment event in town, and that pulled in a lot of people. We get just passed Mandalay and my 2yo zonks out.

    The Grandview Resort
We get all to the Grandview, I get us checked in, and Limo driver drops us off at our building. We have a 2 room suite for $120/night. It is (2) one-bedroom suites that share a keyed door to the hallway.

    Day 2: Friday January 18, 2013
Goodmorning Las Vegas. Of course, I naturally wake up at 5am (7am MN time). It is bright outside, hard to go back to sleep. DW and I have the 9mo and 2yo in the king-size bed with us. Plenty of room for all 4 of us. 13yo DD pushed two of the living room chairs together and slept in them all week. DD and DS took the pullouts.

Around 9am, my brother shows up and we eat breakfast. Room service was a reasonable option. Afterwards, he drives me to Rental car and I pick up the minivan. We all get packed and ready to go.

    Hoover Dam
It was a nice drive out to the dam. I have not been there since the new bridge has been open. Last visit was ~7 years ago. We are doing the Power Plant tour. This place is truly amazing. The tour was really neat and worth doing. The exhibits/museum after the tour was nice as well. We spent the next several hours walking down and back on the dam. We go through the shop and get a magnet for our fridge and eat at the cafe.

We take the drive across the dam and back then off to drive on the new bridge. We were all bummed that you can't see anything when driving on the bridge. I understand why the made the concrete walls on the sides very high. 1. Wind 2. Gawkers.

    Silverton & Bass Pro
After the Dam, we go back to the Grandview and relax. We were going to go up in the Stratosphere, but all opt not to, especially for the price. We head over to the Silverton to wander through Bass Pro and have dinner. This has to be the nicest Bass Pro that I have ever been in. My 2yo loved it. She loves the "fishies" and also enjoyed the mermaid tank. We at at the Sundance Grill and the food was good. My brother just so happen to know the Maitre D.

    Fremont Street Experience
After dinner, my brother and I took my 3 oldest along with MIL & FIL up to Fremont Street to do the zip line and see the light show. We got there around 9:15pm. As usual, it was very entertaining people watching. Got to teach my 13yo DD a few things (what that smell was, what a drag queen is, etc.). We did the zip line and watched the 10pm show. After that, it was time to get the kids out of there; too many drunk >50yo's LOL

Well, the night started out a bit rough. At 1am, my son came in and said he was not feeling well. He was running warm so I took his temp and it was 102.2. At first I though it may be from his overeating at dinner and the milk shake, but usually the fever would not get that high. I gave him some Tylenol to give him some comfort, get him a bottle of water and get him back to bed. He slept good and in the morning, still a fever, so he's quarantined for the day. DW and the 9mo will stay back with him.

Today we plan to hit M&M world and the kids want to get some gifts for their friends and we plan to just wander the strip a bit. Then tonight I have Blue Man Group tickets. We grab bfast at IHOP then back to the Grandview and get ready to go.

    M&M World
We park in the Trop lot and the kidlets want to go to M&M world and get some things and a b-day present for neighbor/friend who turns 13. We get the personalized M&M's w/ her name on them and Happy B-Day and a Vegas image on them and a few other misc items. MIL & FIL get my 8yo, who is back at the hotel, a t-shirt. The kids also get M&M Kendama's - very popular toy/game right now, but won't see too many with M&M ones.

    Strip / Bellagio Water Show
We then work our way up the strip. Had to stop and get a Las Vegas fridge magnet. When we go places, we get a magnet for the fridge. My oldest DD's idea. We take a rest at the Bellagio waiting for the water show to begin. After the show, we head South, going through the shops and getting on the tram @ Crystals/Aria and to MC to pick up the BMG tickets. We grab a cup of coffee/smoothies at Starbucks and cupcakes at the Cupcakery. Then back to the Trop and back to the Grandview. We end up just ordering Pizza for dinner.

    Blue Man Group
We park in the MC garage and go in for BMG. We got there early for the parade and jam session before the show. Since my 8yo was not feeling well yet, I brought my 2yo with to the show. We watch the parade/opener and the doors open and we go in. I had purchased 8 tickets, 4th row back from the stage off the center isle. My brother and I both have seen the show when it was at the Venetian, however, this show did have a lot of new content. My 2yo LOVED the show and everyone else as well.

Well, it is competition day. My 10yo DD is competing in the Lady Luck Gymnastics Invitational. We order room service and relax while DW does DD's hair (takes about an hour to get her hair ready - a big deal for these meets).

DS stays back with FIL and the rest of us walk over to South Point. Holy Sh!t is South Point Smokey! We have to walk all the through, as usual, to get back to where the meet is being held. Do you know what is very disappointing? The hall outside, where they have registration and vendors, they have people smoking and a bar open! WTF!

We check in at ~11:15 and the competition moves along nicely. We are done by 2:30. My 2yo slept through the whole thing and I fed the 9mo a fruit cup over most of it. After the comp was over, I carried the 2yo and 9mo back to the Grandview as DW stayed back for awards. DD placed 5th on Floor and 8th on Beam. Bars and vault are not her strong areas.

Here are some pix of my 10yo DD.

I played with the 2 lil ones. They were playing hide-and-seek with each other.

We end up just relaxing for the rest of the evening. DW and kids go back to S. Point to watch others compete and shop. I take DS and the 2 lil ones out for walk. Afterwards, we get MIL & FIL to go out to dinner @ S. Point.

I don't think any of us could stay awake past 10pm.

Thanks for taking the time for posts and pictures. It sounds like a great trip and pretty smooth sailing with all your youngins. I laughed at your child sleeping on two chairs the whole trip. Your kids are troopers! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks. The kids are use to traveling. We have no family near by so it is 4.5 hours west for 6 hours southeast. Plus we take a year trip or two somewhere in the US. This summer we are going to Pittsburgh for a week (work) then DC for 1 week.

What it so cool about this message board is the wide variance of TRs. Contrast this journey with the one natedog is on and you have two totally different stories, and both indeed are adventures in their own way.
Love the variety and appreciate your sharing.

I have more pics to add. Photobucket was very slow, so just going to process on my end and upload.

As far as the one sleeping in the two chairs, that is my oldest; 13yo daughter. She rather sleep on the floor than in a bed; she's an odd one.

Just wait until I post Monday and Tuesday - then you will really she how big of troopers they are. :)

My brother went home yesterday and today, we are headed back to the strip with the kidlets to have some fun. We park in the Monte Carlo garage and walk down to NY-NY.

    NY-NY
Snap a photo, get a coffee, kids get pretzels and we make our way to the Roller Coaster. DW, lil ones + MIL & FIL go through the shops and we meet up with them downstairs. MIL & FIL drop a few $ in the slots.

    Mandaly Bay
After NY-NY, we walk over to Ex and grab the Tram to Mandalay Bay where we walk, walk, more walking and eventually get back to the Shark Reef Aquarium.

    Luxor
We walk from Shark Reef all the over to the Luxor and eat while MIL & FIL go through the Titanic exhibit.

    Long walk
We walk from Luxor through Ex, back over to NY-NY, then walk to the Tram @ MC to the Bellagio. Walk through Bellagio garden, around the fountain and watch the show as we walk by. We walk and walk and walk....Finally we made it to:

    TI
We watched the Sirens show @ 5:30pm. I heard two ladies behind me make a comment loud enough for me to hear that this is not a "children show." Well, IMO, you are wrong. The is nothing wrong with Kids watching this show. So yes the language has a lot of Adult content ties, but the kids don't understand that. Every watch animated movies? Yes they are dressed in a more adult show manner, but no different then watching the dancers on TV shows for family or even going to the beach. The point is, I as a parent will decide what is appropriate and inappropriate for my children but not going to sensor everything in life. Where will that get you? I'd rather teach my kids then let them find out on their own. Look back at my Fremont Street report. I explained several things to my 13yo DD there. I remember once when my oldest was maybe 7 and she came home sad nearly in tears because a neighbor mom told her the music she was listening to was "inappropriate." I told my DD that the only inappropriate music is "Gangsta Rap." ...anyways, enough with the rant...

    Jimmy Buffets
After the show, we walk over to Jimmy Buffets Margaritaville for dinner. The 2yo is out cold. We eat dinner and make our way back down to the MC, staying on the east side of the strip. We take the bridge-way over and get on the Aria/Crystals tram back to the MC and call it a night! I pushed everyone hard for the day. Put some miles on the shoes.

    Time to Pack Up
That night as the kids sleep, DW and I get things wrapped up and packed up for the journey home.

Hey servocam! Thanks for all the pics. Your whole family seems to travel well together. The Grandview looks like a pretty nice place for the family. Wouldn't you rather be in Vegas, than face our Twin Cities Commute tomorrow morning?

The Grandview worked out well for a family / trip with kids:
    1. Right across from South Point
    2. Had 2 bedroom Suite (2 one bedrooms joined)
    3. Only paid $119/night for both

I work from home, so didn't have to drive to work today :Þ :) I had ~3 inches of heavy wet snow to clear off. Went out at noon to do it and pull the 2yo around in the sled for a bit.

I was thinking the same thing, very very different than my trips reports. Always interesting to see how others do Vegas.
