Hi, I've been staying at the Rio for a couple weekdays and am thinking about extending that to the weekend.

I know the $20 trick is used to upgrade rooms once reserved - is there any way I can use it to get a lowered weekend rate instead? What should I ask for?

If not, how can I get Strip or a couple miles from the Strip for less than $30 a weekend night? I don't have a great rewards account anywhere.

(I might be asking the impossible here, let me know, but it's Vegas so ya never know.)

    Thanks

The problem is most hotels are busy on the weekend. You seem to be operating on the assumption your room isn't already sold to someone else for the date you are schedule to check out. If they aren't busy, you shouldn't need to tip to extend at a good rate but chances are they probably need your room. If you really think you may need to extend, do it now.

if you have any type of decent play at the property, they will probably give it to you. all you have to do is ask a host.

I doubt you can get anywhere that cheap on the weekend. Even Stratosphere , Circus Circus would be higher. Try Priceline, Hotwire.

Just ask what the rate is, I'm guessing it would be cheaper to find something more reasonable.

Weekend rates are usually 2 1/2 -4 times the amount of weekday rates because there of much higher demand. You aren't likely to find ANY place with weekend room rates near $30. Even off-Strip economy hotels like Motel 6, Travelodge and Super 8 charge a lot more than that for weekend stays.

I have never heard anyone negotiating a reduced rate using the $20 trick. But if you choose to try it, the worst that could happen is that you get turned down.

Rooms are reduced because of your gaming activity, your host or promotion offer, or an ajustment due to a service problem, I haven't heard of anyone reducing a room rate simply because they want to extend their stay. It could be possible if they do accept an extention, one of the reason mentioned, could be honored; but not just for the extention itself.

Good luck. You could do what Howard Hughes did- refuse to leave. He then bought the place, but I digress
