Yes, the "contemporary" rooms are the more recently renovated - they used to call them the "wide screen rooms" (because they had wide screen TVs and at that time the older rooms didn't).

You can find images of the rooms by just going to http://images.google.com and typing in "Excalibur Las Vegas" and then selecting to view room pictures - the contemporary rooms have the lighter colored bedding.

I am not 100% sure but I think Tower II (the western tower, the one away from The Strip) is all contemporary rooms and the Tower I rooms are the older rooms.

I think the biggest things with the contemporary rooms is that they look better but also they have pillow top mattresses, so the beds are pretty soft and comfortable.

Here's a video. Yes they were "remodeled" like 10 years ago haha. Excalibur is still very barebones, no frills or luxuries, I haven't stayed in a few years but it's always been clean at least.

We stayed in Tower II last September and our room overlooked NYNY, I could see the WAX bus stop on Flamingo from my room. It had a flat screen but the bed came from the Fred Flintstone catalogue, hard as a rock and somewhat uncomfortable.

The Excalibur buys carpet cleaning chemical by the tanker load and while I was leaving my room, a maintenance worker was in the hallway riding a small carpet extractor, like a zamboni, putting the cleaning fluid down and sucking most of it back with the squeegee in the rear. Mix that odor with smoke on the casino floor and you have that unique smell that is eau de Excalibur. It will be absorbed by your clothing and it will follow you home when you unpack your luggage, so you have a memory of your trip until you do the laundry.

With that said, I get offers for two free nights, midweek, plus $25 freeplay, and I would stay here again due to location plus access to the Tram.

Excal is pretty much my home base casino.

The Tower II rooms are MUCH nicer than the Tower I rooms.

The contemporary ARE the remodeled rooms and are in Tower II.

No only are the bed much softwer, but the AC control is digital so you can set your desired temp...not just hi low like the Tower I rooms. The bathrroms also have granite countertops, carpets is newer, furniture is newer.

It is only a $10 upgrade from Tower I to Tower II, so I tell everything that is staying there to just pay the upgrade if they cant get it for free.

It is common for people to complain about the kids, and the strollers, and the smell, and the confusing layout...but to be honest, I have stayed at Excal 7 times in the past 3 years and have never had an issues with kids or strollers, the smell doesnt bother me anymore than other casinos, and I think the layout is one of the easiest to navigate...

As with any "tell me about this hotel" thread, you are going to get mixed reviews.

Excalibur does have a unique smell. I don't mind it, actually kinda like the smell.

As for the rooms, the contemporary tower is tower 2, closer to the pool and views towards NyNy. They are medium sized rooms with a flat screen tv, work table, sitting chair and little side table. The bathrooms are bland and fine. They do not have in room wifi. They do have wifi in casino as part of resort fee.
