The wife and I have stayed at the El Cortez before, but I believe that we stayed in the tower rooms and it was a great room. This time we are staying in a Pavilion Room on the 5th floor above the Parking Garage. We have never been in this area of the Motel before and some of the Room reviews say the problems with the rooms are pedestrian traffic outside your room and traffic noise and the room opens to the outside. I am wondering how pedestrian traffic and traffic noise can be a problem on the 5th floor.

Would we be ahead to spend a little extra and move to a tower room???

I stayed in them once and it wasn't that good, they are motel style rooms. if you open the drapes anyone walking by can see inside, also it was fairly noisy - not extreme but noticeable. If the savings are great give them a try, if you can get a tower room for only a little more I would do that however.

By the way, the noise is from people and maids walking by your room, not from the street 5 stories down.

    Upgrade cost are very reasonable...

Checking on the price difference between a Pavilion Room and a Tower Room it is only $32.00 so I have made the change already. From everything that I hear it is a wise decision..

I must be one of the most frugal travelers on the board, but when I book two nights at El Cortez using the American Casino Guide I upgrade to the Cabana for $54 total rather then the Pavillion for $34 total.
As well as the noise issues, the Pavillion has no decent place to set my computer.
I don't think you will be sorry.
When you are there take a ride up in the elevator and walk around the Pavillion rooms to get a sense of it. My biggest noise issue is that the cleaners run carts that sound as if there is a small train running ourside the room, and then they shout to one another. If you are always out during the day, this is not an issue. But if you wake up early and want a nap, well... forget it.

    Cost Difference....

No, that total cost difference was for the entire 5 days that we are staying. I thought it was very reasonable.

No question on this one. The upgrade is worth much more than $6 a night.

When i stayed some years ago, I could hear tire squealing, and the room was cold. I had a tower room this summer and it was fine.

I am in a Tower room (king) right now and I can tell you that it is much nicer than the Pavilion rooms..... I normally stay in the pavilion and have been bothered by noise many times.....plus last time in a pavilion room I dropped a MSS 16 oz beer glass in the sink bowl and it cracked the bowl and started leaking... I couldn't believe it and I was glad they didn't try to charge me for it later.
