With a 2 night stay coming up in early Sept, I emailed reservations mgr yesterday (my host left them) about my concerns (all the negative news re: hotel/casino). I got this back today from guest services manager. Sounds like lots of 'dancing' here which I can appreciate, but it was a darn quick response. I certainly hope the new host gets in touch with me. I'm still on the fence with them, thus waiting to hear back from a host at GN as my plan B.

In any case, for what it's worth....

Thank you for reaching out. We appreciate your interest in getting some clarification and to allow us to dissipate some inaccurate information.

As an active business, we are changing and improving all the time. We have launched series of innovative new techniques and focused on improving our processes and operations. All with our guests best interest. We have been listening to our guest comments and observed our business trends. As a responsible corporation, we made necessary decisions to ensure the prosperity of the Downtown Grand and continuous success.

We surely would like you to be able to judge by yourself and see that our property is doing well and is indeed, striving to better serve you.

Al has indeed left us to go out of state and out of the Casino industry. We are missing him and his great spirit already. I have reached out to our Casino Marketing and your new host will be contacting you soon.[/COLOR]

I'm not quite sure how closing their table games during the day is an innovative technique with the guests' best interests in mind, but hey, I don't have a degree in hospitality management either.

I don't know what else a manager could say to a guest, certainly not any inside information.

But if they are closing within a week I doubt a manager would bother responding at all ...

Really right. I am guessing this is what the unedited letter would read.

    ********
Dear Mr. Guest, basically your [email protected] We are cutting back, because frankly those pricks in the front office can't balance their own checkbook let alone run a multi-million dollar corporation.
Frankly I just hope we make payroll the next couple of weeks, until I plan to start a new job. Wish me luck I got two more interviews over at Boyd. We have made changes to just keep the bare minimum
level of staffing in place so the NGC does not shut us down. Sorry about you lossing your host, but Al saw the writing on the wall and ran as fast as he could. We hope to have some new fish in
here from VegasTemps to work the phones next week and basically be the punching bag for all the stuff we wont be comping.

We think once you get here, if we ply you with cheap booze, we will be able to keep you drunk enough to not notice how F'd we are. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Yeah, the response was clear as mud. Me thinks a conversation with host will be more telling. Course, if the host doesn't call me, that will be damn telling as well. More news in our 6:00 report.

Really! TapTalk doesn't offer me grammatical suggestions and I am too lazy on social media to put the proof reading effort.

Just to put this response in perspective, in your initial email did you ask for clarification on specific issuess (e.g. table hours, etc) or was it just a more general email? I'm just curious as to whether he intentionally avoided direct questions or managed to "answer" a general concern without providing any substance.

    Thanks!

It was general, I was fishing. Just trying to get some read from them. Here's the original email I sent.....

    Kacie,

Reading some Las Vegas message boards and from other sources, there is a great deal of negative news concerning The Grand - staff reductions, tables closed, possibly up for sale, and/or closing. I understand my host (Al) also left.

Obviously, news such as this is unsettling for someone who has reservations there for a stay in two weeks.

Can you cast any light on what is going on there and would it be wise for me to find accommodations elsewhere? Appreciate any information you can share.

    Downtown Bland?

Can you cast any light on what is going on there and would it be wise for me to find accommodations elsewhere?

We are locals who go downtown to lose money regularly. We called to make a reservation at the Downtown Grand this month and were told that management had downgraded my room type to a standard and offered my wife a king smoking when she was originally offered a suite. The last time we were there, some of our pals who work there told us to say goodbye to Al DeLeon which we did. He said he was going to Texas to work in another aspect of the gambling industry. We have Nathan as a host, a fine guy. But he is the 4th host we have had if you don't include Al who was only our host for a few weeks. The others left without warning over the past few years. Being regulars (loved the one bedroom suites, the location, and had some luck here and there), We have watched the institution decline in quality and ambiance. Last time we were there, an employee shared that the rumor had it that Derek Stevens of the D was negotiating to buy the place. But then he bought the Vegas Club, so maybe they got caught up in some imbroglio and were just bargaining chips. The D owners are rumored to want more downtown properties and also rumored to be over-extended. Who knows? Regardless, things are looking pretty bad for the Grand right now...

I stopped by yesterday afternoon around 5pm and the place was so slow. I decided to play craps which made it TWO players on the table. When the dice went off the table there was no one around to get the dice and one of the staff had to ask the pit boss to leave his position to get it. Since there were no customers on his side of the table he had no problem going after the dice. Although I lost badly on the game I did tip the staff as usual and when the pit boss was tapped out he went over to me and thanked me for tipping the staff.

The 2 hosts I worked with over at The D both just went over there. I'm betting you'll hear from one of them. I just heard from Martie about 2 weeks ago. She told me that she can offer what I had at the D. But, with all the changes not sure if I'll be staying there.

I have emailed my host twice about an up coming stay and got nothing back, I also sent a generic email to the contact us link with nothing back. I am getting rather frustrated.

I have some offers from the DG that I figured I 'd better take advantage of. I had 4 nights in a premium room for Sep. and the same for Oct. I am going from Wed., Sep. 30, through Oct. 3. However, when I called the grand to reserve the room, the reservations person told me that I couldn't use he promotions because there had to be 24 hours between using the Sept. offer (the night of 9-30) and the Oct. offer (the other 3 nights). After arguing with her for awhile, I asked her to transfer me to a casino host, but none was available. later, a host (Margie?) called me back and comped me the rooms, although a standard room. Its just me, so a standard room is fine as I only sleep in the room anyway.

So, this got me to thinking, "Is this an issue elsewhere?" I had nights available at MSS, El Cortez, and the D. So I called all three and received no hassle from any other place. All 3 sounded glad to have me, all 3 had policies similar to DTG, but all 3 could figure out I wasn't trying to game the system, it just so happened that my travel day fell on the 30th.

So, only one hotel, the DTG, tried to keep me from staying there. cripes, no wonder they are struggling.

The picture i get here re: Grand appears to be getting darker and as of today, still no call or email from the new host that was to contact me. Place has me wondering but at same time, host at GH I left voice mail for on Monday hasn't responded yet either. Apparently she doesn't know who I am. yeah right....

I guess I am not sure why someone would even consider staying at the DT Grand at this point in time (and perhaps even giving them any of my gambling budget). Surely there are better alternatives for you (Golden Nugget comes to mind, ElCo if you are looking to save some money on accomodations).

There are way too many uncertainties and BS Going on there at the moment. My time in Vegas is way to important to me than to risk screwing my trip up with this kind of nonsense.

Well, for me, the rooms are free and I like their pool. The Golden Nugget's pool is lousy with kids. Plus, I may not have a chance to stay there again. As for gambling, that's the beauty of downtown; plenty of options just a few blocks away.
