It has a 7th street exit so I'm assuming it is a block east of El Cortez?

Yeah, I was walking over to the El Cortez Mon. night and Boom! a huge grasshopper with fire shooting out of its antennas! It was in front of the container park and it was opening night, they said.

I was there this weekend and was impressed with what I saw. Talked with two Burners who run the Mantis and they were pleased to be there and doing what they do. The Park itself is nicely done - they did not cheap out on it. The shops are eclectic and interesting. And, the children's play equipment in the middle of it all seemed to really interest the kids. There's plenty of room to hang out.

Security made it clear they do not want outside alcoholic beverages brought in. But, you're free to roam around inside the Park if you buy beverages there.

Burner = those who regularly attend Burning Man. A Burner built The Mantis and two Burners run it 7 nights a week - paid for by Tony Hsieh of Zappos.

    Thursday is the Grand Opening.
It is an easy walk east of the canopy and the kids will love the play area.
The dome wasn't open this past weekend.

    Pics Last Tuesday Night

I was there last Tuesday and will try to upload some pics. I was getting my hiking beard shaved by Ernesto at the ElCo barber shop and my wife went over to check out container park. I took pics while crossing the street from the ElCo. Also took a pic of a stage they setup for some live music. I liked the place it had a cool vibe. They looked like they had some nice drinking places and that night they had a a Brazilian little drum group and street dancers performing. It was a fun atmosphere. Security was tight and probably needed, a lot street people hanging out in that area and security was not letting them in.

I didn't check any of the shops but my wife did. She said they had shop interesting shops but nothing really caught her eye which is really surprising because she normally always finds something she likes. I hope they do well but I can see them struggling, we'll see.

Hahaha! I assumed 'burners' was the name for the guys that operate the fire on the Mantis!!

We strolled through this thing last weekend. I believe it was the opening weekend, plus another event was being held nearby, so there was a sizable crowd milling around the place.

Most of the shops and restaurants had very limited offerings and were physically very small as the containers have a relatively small footprint. Wouldn't be surprised if half of them failed within the next 12 months. After seeing it firsthand, my impression is this is focused more towards locals who are down there during business hours. It simply doesn't have the legs to be a viable tourist destination, IMHO.
