I spent some time downtown Friday night to see all the changes in person that I've been lamenting. The owners of the casinos are clearly doing the right thing profit and loss wise. I take everything I've said back. It was a party everywhere I walked. Football and yard long drinks were the norm.

Apparently if you're dealers wear bikinis BJ players could care less what the rules are. Even the LV Club was busy. Pay tables mean nothing to the uninformed and inebriated.

Still plenty of good options left downtown MSS and Cal for us old folks. Those casinos were busy also but margins probably lower as most players there are more conservative and informed.

I wasn't impressed with the Down Town Grand. Think they missed the mark on the party crowd and the gambling crowd. sounded like the pool on the top had something going on but not sure. Casino wasn't busy.

    I still hate Slotzilla!

Anyway, just wanted to say I was wrong. Downtown isn't just for the degen gambler anymore. Long live free enterprise!

Agreed! I miss the old downtown but still enjoy the new. It's just a different kind of fun.

Check out El Cortez if you get a chance too. It's really looking good now and the vibe there was great when I visited.

The Picnic had a party with 3 bands. I caught the last few songs of the closers Roxy Gunn. They were pretty good playing standard rock covers. It was free to all.

If you mean the D and/or Golden Gate, you might want to pay closer attention to the rules. Defiantly better than most DT. Certainly better than Four Queens, Binions, or anything Boyd deals. Even Vegas Club has good rules now by "bikini" dealer's on most tables. I still don't get it that most assume the GN has lousy games, when they in fact have the best shoe game DT.

Too many make this assumption without checking the facts. The Elco is a lone exception, but the heat is unbearable for quarter or higher bettors.

I'm confused by these statements as well Tom. I've always found BJ rules at the GG, The D and LV Club to be far better than MSS. Has something changed in the last month?

As far as I know, Binion's party pit with scantily clad dealers is the only one with poor rules (6:5). The other clubs have good rules (3:2, DOA, DAS).

You can't just assume that a table with a dealer in bikini must have bad rules. And it's wrong to say that those playing at the GG and The D are uninformed. Just the opposite!

Guess I hit a nerve with a couple people. I did assume the rules sucked and didn't check them out so my bad. Every party pit I've actually looked at was paying 6:5 so by association I lumped them all together. Maybe downtown will maintain some of it's gambling luster.

Binion's & Golden Nugget have 6:5 in their party pits. I've not seen it elsewhere downtown (meaning theD, LVC & GG - the others don't have party-pits!)

the party pits at binions are actually contracted out to someone else to run - they set their own rules. also the secondary pit at the back runs 6/5 but the main pit is all 3/2.

Nah, you just had us worried that there had been some big changes downtown. Well, being called uninformed may have hurt just a bit. It's all good now though.:poke:

As you said in your original post, "The owners of the casinos are clearly doing the right thing profit and loss wise." Glad to hear you had a good time downtown!

While the value at the EC is decent, it isn't as good as pre - resort fees. The rates are still the same but now you have to add about $9 to your nightly rate. That makes it similar to the other DT hotels now IMHO.

I'm staying in the vintage rooms in June. I booked prior to the resort fee so I got it at a good price. I checked the rates now and they are the same as when I booked it, but now it is $9 more a night with the resort fee. Not sure if I will be staying at the EC in the future, with the resort fee I can get the Cal at a similar rate. I would rather stay at the Cal since I gamble at MSS more than at the EC. I guess the EC can keep their rates the same (and add on the resort fee) because they feel they can still attract the customers.....except for me. :Þ

After years of strip trips...with an occasional few hours downtown...our last trip started with fri and sat nights DT. We LOVED it!! Loved staying at The Grand...loved the energy on Freemont at night...loved the container park and really enjoyed the new bars just off freemont. Don't miss The Laundry Room as its the coolest bar ever. Dont tell Mama is a great piano bar and Insert Coins is very fun. After a great weekend downtown....we will start alternating our hotels from the strip. Really a cool new vibe altogether! Loved it!

Only problem with the Golden Gate is the automatic shuffler. The rules other then that are pretty good. The D has good rules out of a shoe. So no need to worry, downtown is still doing fine with the party pits!

I dont mind the new blood downtown. But this geezer loves downtown. We spend most of our Vegas trips downtown with a short visit to the strip.
I enjoy the new vibe of Fremont street. I could do without the costumed people. I guess a little bad with the good.
I Cant wait to visit container park next month. It sounds great.
