Interesting (and discouraging) downward trend figures. I also find it interesting that 5 years ago, the sky wasn't falling like it has been in recent Lake Mead media reporting. Not to minimize the problem, but there is a certain degree of bandwagoning going on with the record low water level reports. The emerging problem has been well known and documented for years.

Data from the Bureau of Reclamation:

Still, a drop of two feet is substantial. It is getting near to being below the intake tubes that supply water to Las Vegas. What they need is heavy snowfall in the mountains for about 10 straight years.

NIck's correct. This simply is non-news from the perspective of being easily anticipated. That we as a society like to do the ostrich thing on the Colorado (and other) watershed(s) really is no different than folks seeing the buzz of the Strip and ignoring all the ugliness behind it. It's a cycle, always has been. If we're in the midst of one of those true epochs of drought -- as opposed to a historically irrelevant relative handful of years -- we are going to have to rethink a lot of what we do and how we do it. Low-flow toilets, astroturf lawns and turning pools into skateparks won't matter an iota.

Yes, it was reported 5 years ago, with less fanfare. But, the problem now has 5 more years of the problem getting worse, hence more reporting, etc. Makes logical sense.
