Just got back from Vegas from end of February trip. I remember making this mistake on my first trip to Vegas. Gambling on games which I have no clue on how to play. Back then, a $2 or $3 min bet was common. 30 years later, I see this happening on every trip, and usually just find another table or casino if I need to. But in this day and age, with $15 or even $25 minimums, you would think that learning the ins and outs of a game before dropping half-a-grand, or just sticking to what you know, might be a better idea. Plus, people at the tables doing some "serious" gambling may be able to keep better control of their blood pressure.

    that is all !

    Ain't it the truth!

For years, when craps table newbies would try to make a pass line bet after a point number was established, most dealers would tell the player not to or offer an alternative, like a place bet. Today? Not on your life! They'll invariably let the ignorant player make a bet that they're a 6:5 to 2:1 dog on without a word. (Unless I can stop them first!)

I don't know which is sadder - that the house will let an ignorant player make an unfavorable bet (not a surprise, really) or that players will make bets that they have no clue about with astonishing frequency.

Like Sam Grafstein says in "The Dice Doctor":

"Watch the play of MOST gamblers. You'll swear they can't be using money they had to WORK for."

That being said, aside from basic human compassion, why should this bother the "serious" gambler so much that it would ultimately effect his or her blood pressure?

And, giving it further thought, what would lead us to believe that the mere fact that someone is an experienced gambler should make a bit of difference?

We've all seen "serious" gamblers with big bankrolls and enough experience to know better put on "drunk and wiseguy shows" where they make every kind of wacky bet, tap out and then sign markers for more. (These idots we call "characters.")

Is there really any difference between a first-time crap table virgin making a $5.00 field bet with a trembling hand and a Vegas veteran hurling in a green and yelling, "My $25.00 Whirl bet* is back up!"?

*Whirl Bet. The five worst bets on the crap table all at the same time.

I just may be naive, but I don't understand how other people choosing to spend/gamble their money, even foolishly, upsets people. It's their money.

while i was standing at the craps table, a young fella, middle-aged, nicely dressed, like a person who works in the financial district, calmly walked over and placed a $500 chip on the field. he won big from the roulette table, which was why he had a few $500 chips in his pocket, so he probably thought that he could do the same at the field bet. anyways, long story short, it was a cold table, and he lost about 2 grand.

It is their money and you're right it shouldn't matter. However, i have to say that it irritates me at times to see people just throw away money because these are many times the same people that bitch and moan after their trip to Vegas that they went broke. Now if they've got "money to burn", then I say have at it.

I don't gamble to make a huge amount of money. Do I want to win? Yes, I do and i like the thrill of playing but I damn sure don't go to casinos to lose my mortgage payment.

I see people pissing away their cash at blackjack all the time. Basic strategy is so easy to learn. I agree, it's their money and they can do what they want. What I can't stand is when one of these morons criticizes MY play.

as a contradiction to the story, I was playing $5 min e-craps at a local casino. Dude next to me makes one bet. table max $500 field. Remember these are video machines at a bar. the number "12" rolls. His machine locks up for a hand-pay of $2,000. He gets so excited, he slams his fist on the bar in happiness effectively breaking both his and my e-craps screens. I could not change any of my bets that were already spread (I had about 3 or 4 working come bets with odds, other place bets and hardways). It was a blessing in disguise though as I was certain the seven would roll soon. I was mad because I wanted to remove all the bets that I could, and every one of my remaining bets paid off, even though I couldn't change/remove them.

I know that each roll of the dice is a random event, but it is still upsetting when there is a hot shooter and some bozo places an extremely late field bet, the dice hits his arm, hands, whatever and I'm sure you know the results.

    Just saying.

that is all ! go packers
