    This past Sunday -
    We're on the 17th fairway.
The guy furthest away hits from 210 - 215 yds out.
I watch......but half the green ( and the pin ) is shaded by a large tree.
So the flight of the ball going from very bright, sunny sky to shade was
impossible to follow all the way .
We all hit and walk up to the green.
I'm 20 yds short and working on my chip shot ----- while the guy who
hit from 210 yds out --- is walking around the green + rough.
He's getting pissed cos he can't find his ball.
Another guy ( with the best eyesight I've ever witnessed says )---
"It was going right at the pin."
...........and the 4th guy says from the sandtrap...."Did you check the cup ?"
I start laughin'.........doesn't somebody always say that ?
The guy pulls the pin........and out pops his ball !!!......NICE !
    Par 4......he "eagled" it.
I ask him on the next tee : "When's the last time you had an 'eagle' ?"
He says : "Last time ?.......I don't even know how to score card it ?":evillaugh

Way back in high school one of my best friends claimed he had a double eagle* on a par 5. Says he hit a real good second shot towards the green but couldn't find the ball so he drops another randomly near the green and chips it on and pulls the flag to putt it out only to find his first ball already in the cup. That's why you gotta check the cup!

Yeah, that's why we always give him the air quotes. Ah, we were 17 years old and playing the $4 twilight rate. Pretty soon that same hole will be changed from par 5 to par 4 due to modern clubs. It's a 440 yard hole.

440 should be a four. Unless that's from the fronts!

I had something similar happen to me two years ago in my league but from a much shorter distance. #18 at my course is downhill for about 250 yards from the tee, then has a flat area, and then goes back uphill towards the green. From the flat area you can see the pin but not the green. I was down in the flat area and hit my second shot which felt good and I figured it would leave me with a decent birdie putt but wasn't quite sure how far away it would be since I couldn't see the green. As we work our way up the hill there are two balls in the vicinity of the pin but after I check both of those out I find out they are the balls of my fellow playing partners. I walk over to the cup just to see if it was in there and sure enough, there was my ball sitting in the bottom of the cup.

In the past two years I've holed out from the fairway twice on Par 4's, but unfortunately both of them have been uphill shots so I haven't been able to actually see the ball go in the cup.
