Do I need a credit card to check into my hotel or will my normal visa debit do it
Oh no... here we go again.
You can use a debit card. Many would strongly advise against it. They do a hold. It is a hard hold against your checking account. It may not get released right away. If you have a low balance, you could have a problem. If you have lots of money in your account, no big deal.
Credit cards are the best way to go - assuming you have that option.
A search on the word DEBIT will give you lots of info.
CC, or prepare to have $200+ frozen in your bank.
Your debit should do it. Key word = should.
A debit card should do the trick but I would definitely call the hotel's front desk just to give yourself some peace of mind. Most, if not all, hotels will accept a debit card but I'd call just to make sure and put to rest any doubts before you make your trip. Have a great trip.
Nostress, we can always count on you to be on top of the credit card vs debit card questions.
Thanks. I think.
Just before your post, somebody mentioned that most hotels will accept a debit card.
I am 99% sure that ALL hotels will accept it, and of course put a hard hold on your checking account.
Call me "Mr Anti Debit Card"
Haha, love the "Anti Debit Card" Nostress. Also OP (Stephen) remember, you get some insurance with a CC, none with a debit card.
With Wells Fargo, at least with my account, they will cover you for bona fide fraud on both the Visa credit and Visa debit card.
Same thing here. Their CC and DC fraud departments are really good, I'll usually get a text or a call if something fishy turns up. They're really good about reversing fraudulent charges and getting the account holder a new CC or DC expedited.
There is nothing fishy about a normal debit card hold. It is a legitimate hold against your checking account.
s/ "Mr Anti Debit Card"
Agreed, I was talking about straight out fraud like getting a call from Wells Fargo asking if I am up in Brooklyn buying pizza and furniture from IKEA. I've gotten to the point where the only thing I use my debit card for is hitting my WF branch's ATM for cash. Count me in the anti-debit card camp as well.
