Our friends have been planning a trip to vegas next week for several months. We usually go with them once a year, but this time was out of the question due to high airfare and real estate taxes coming due in two weeks. But, I've continued to check airfare and it's just been crazy high. But, my normally level headed husband says yesterday, let's drive. I just laugh, thinking he's joking. Then he starts pulling out his clothes and toiletries. Shit, is he serious or pulling my leg?

Yesterday, I laughed and was like, hmmm, let's pretend we are in young again and just do it, leave the worries, kids, etc behind. No way do I think this will fall together. I call my daughter and she readily agrees to stay at our house for the week to watch the dogs, "let me guess, Vegas?" Hubbie has the trip mapped out, two different routes, but says he wants to take the southern route. Whatever, doesn't make sense to me to add on 2-300 hundred miles. But..

I know I have five nights at CET, so No worries there. Check availability at Ballys. All good, even free play AND a gas card of all things. Seriously?

Our friends are staying at Cosmo, which we love, but I haven't gotten an email from them since Feb with any offers. For sh_ts and giggles I call. I have two free nights, king terrace and free play. This is getting harder and harder to NOT go

Our friends and my mother come over for dinner last night. I thought my mother would think we are crazy, especially since we have a family function on Sunday, the day we want to leave. Nope. Instead, she says, I'm going with you, can you drop me off in Phoenix? She wants to visit friends for a couple of days. Now, the Southern route is fine

I'm not quite sure how this is actually happening, but I think it is. Here's the kicker, we have VERY little money for gambling. We have gas money, show money, dinner and cocktail money but there's not a lot left over for gambling. But I'm really not caring. Do I really need that $200 cup of coffee in the morning? Hubbie has to work during the day anyway, so it's pool time for me. We want to see Rose.Rabbit.Lie. Which we have free tickets to. Maybe Veronic. We'll go to China Poblano, hit a lot of happy hours. We will prob do some VP, but no slots or tables. We are finding the older we are getting, the less we are gambling. Weird huh? Btw, we are only 50, not 90. Haha

26 hours in a car? Hmmm. We've done Florida several time with the kids, so I know we can do it. We drove to the Outer Banks last year for vaca, so I think this is doable.

    Thoughts?

Sounds like fun! Last minute trips are the best. I've always wanted to do a leisurely road trip to Vegas. One of these days!

I say don't do it, stay at home. Can you feel the jealousy emanating from me toward people that can just say screw it and head to Vegas by car on a whim? Nah, not really, go for it and have a wonderful time - it will make my minor grumbles about the 16 hours or so it takes us to get there no longer utterable ;)

Love it! I love spontaneous decisions. Have a great trip. We are spending the next couple nights at our closest casino (70 miles). One freebie night and $40 for the second night, can't beat that (besides all free of course). OR, could you swing a few more 100 miles out of your way and pick me up here in Minnesota for a quick trip to Vegas?? lol :confused2:

Getting there is half the fun...now the ride home, that may be a different story.

I think it's AMAZING! It doesn't seem like you are FLAT broke. If you have money to eat and see a show you will be fine. Laying by the pool is my favorite part next to gambling in Vegas anyways! You could try to sell some stuff on Kijiji today for extra gambling money if you have anything? Lol just I thought. I do that all the time :)

Sorry let me clarify, I sell stuff on Kijiji that I want to sell, not stuff I don't want to sell lol and I don't do it specifically for gambling money but it's a nice way to get cash for things you have that you don't want/need. Right now I have a TV stand for sale on there and tickets to a concert I won.

Wow. I'm shocked. I thought for certain the consensus would be that we are crazy, save the money and go when you could gamble. Lol

We are headed out for oil change, hit the bank etc. I think it's so funny I can bring all my toiletries, pool stuff, several books etc and not be worried about what fits in my carry on. Hahaha.

Go really wild and bring a 16 oz bottle of shampoo.
    And a box cutter.
    Just 'cause you can.

Oh yes! When I drive I bring food and drinks and pointy knitting needles with metal tips that causes TSA to have a seizure when I fly. ;)

I'm thinking about doing an impromptu trip myself. They are the best!

Ok, voice of reason here. It is crazy!!!!

Just kidding. But I do not think that that I could handle 52 hours in a car
    (26 each way)!!

    Have a great trip.

I love driving to Vegas. Some of the things I've changed are the speed and daily distance. :) I used to drive Seattle -> Twin Falls, ID -> Las Vegas. I would always arrive tired with a flurry of texts asking "Where you at?" "Why aren't you here partying?" "Captain's calling you!!" etc. Now I drive Seattle -> Ontario, OR -> Ely, NV -> Vegas. One extra night makes all the difference and I get to stop and see things along the way. I usually am traveling with my dog and we love to just get out and bushwhack around in the desert.

Like most people, my day to day live can get a little hectic and stressful. I find that once I'm over the Cascades (with a stop for a coffee refill at Red Mountain @ Snoqualmie), I can breathe. Once I've stopped for a bottle or two of wine near Yakima, I start to smile. Once I'm driving through that long series of valleys in Nevada, I'm free of stress and I'm ready for Vegas. (Also, usually trying to figure out how I can work a trip to Great Basin into this trip some day.)

Vegas as your destination is awesome, but enjoy the journey too. That long hauling, trying to do 15 hours a day in the car is for young people. I can't do that anymore. :)

Although the distance we have to travel to get to Vegas pales in comparison to yours, there have been times when my wife and I were sitting at dinner and I look at her and say "let's go to Vegas". We go home, pack, and head out.

    Have fun!

The only thing that shocks me is the detour through Phoenix! Have a great trip!

Moms out lol. She couldn't take the last minute excitement. So it's the northern route for us now. Figure we will leave at 4 am, and stop in Denver for the night. Bedtime is coming up fast, i better pack. Hahaha

Go Go Go Spur of the moment trips are the best and keep you young.

Many years ago when we were young and dumb my wife and realized that all our friends were tied up for the weekend with plans that didn't include us. On Thursday I told my wife we would have a getaway that weekend. We each put the names of 5 cities on a slip of paper and put them in a cup. We drew one and that is where we were going for that weekend. I didn't tell my wife that all five of my slips were Vegas, and she put Vegas on one of her five slips while other four were for some god for saken cities normal people visit. 6 out of ten chance. Vegas was pulled. Bought tickets Thursday night for Friday flight and red-eye return Sunday. Wife to this day does't know all five of my slips were marked Vegas.
