I have always been curious about this. I believe that the casino does not calculate comps on your pass line odds. Just the pass line bet. Knowing that the house advantage for pass line and placing the 6 or 8 are close. Why would you not place the total amount you would usually bet on pass line with odds on the 6 or 8, to get the better comps? Not that you should ever bet strictly for comps. And I do understand that the odds on the pass line do pay out more.

    Sorry for the sophomoric question

Short answer is Pass plus odds is the better bet, no if's ands or buts. There is math behind it. Yes, the HA on the Pass vs Place 6/8 is close (1.41% v 1.52%). But this changes when you take odds. If you take the full 3-4-5x odds, the HA on your pass line wager is reduced to a tiny 0.374%.

Let's say you bet $5 on the pass and take full 5x odds of $25 for a total wager of $30. Your EV is a loss of $0.11 with a comp of roughly $0.04 A $30 place bet on 6/8 has an expected loss of $0.46. From that you might see $0.16 worth of comps generated. So even with comps factored in you're losing about $0.26 more per bet in the long run if you bet the $30 on the place instead of pass w/ odds.

If the casino is not even considering odds, the expected loss on a $5 pass is $0.07. And the expected loss on a $30 pass is $0.46 and even with a $0.16 rebate in comps the pass bet is better.

Though the reality is it depends on the casino chooses to rate odds plus what the boxman puts you in the computer as. They don't track every single dollar every time. If you're betting a bunch of prop bets on the inside they may have you at a higher hold % as opposed to a strict pass/come line better with an occasional place. Some places that consider odds may rate you at a lower % than one that doesn't. And there is no way to really know for certain without being a pit boss. Even then some of the math may be hidden from them since it's computers crunching the numbers and generating theo and offers. So my numbers are what they'd be if anything was tracked and weighted correctly. The reality could be very different, depending on the casino and other factors.

If you're seeking comps..place all the numbers, rather than even playing the pass/dontpass.
I almost NEVER see someone JUST play the pass/dontpass...99.999% of the time they have other bets too (and not just OTHER pass/dontpass, i.e.: come/dontcome.)

If I'm not throwing I'll skip a pass line bet a lot of times and just place the numbers.
