Do you believe in it, or think it's a waste of time?
Seems people have some strong opinions on this - let's hear them!

I set the dice but I don't do it because I think that they can be controlled - I do it because I am a rhythm shooter. Just like a batter getting into the box and getting ready to hit or a basketball player getting ready to shoot FTs...II have a rhythm I get into.

I like to stand right next to the stick on the left side. I'll use one of four sets; flying-v (3 and 3 showing), mini-v (2 and 2 showing), hardways and then one with the yo on the top.

Something I have noticed is that I CAN hit particular numbers with a set if I throw them right. For example if I need a 4-5-9-10 the mini-v is what I will use.

We all know every roll is an independent action but some of the dice setters and rhythm guys who have been doing it will have more prolonged throws than someone who is picking them up and firing them, in my opinion

Almost every time i see a long roll (20+ rolls w/o a 7) its a dice setter rolling
but there's more going on than just setting, the condintion and age of the felt and padding
play a roll in how the dice land and roll
in my experience fresh felt gives more bounce and randomness than old/worn

I used to care and set the dice. Did it work? Yes? I don't know. I am a dark-sider now and if I shoot, I just shoot. Do I get a little nervous seeing a setter? Sure. But the last few still couldn't get past a point.

I definitely set the dice. 3V, I set them in my right hand, put my left hand in the air, do a pirouette and toss them very lightly behind my back down the table. Seems to work.

Yep - I hate new felt and especially if they re-did the padding underneath making it bouncy. Dice fly off the table all the time. Even more so when it is one of the shorter length tables.

There is a table at Harrah's that is like cement and as long as a frickin aircraft carrier - they keep it by the exit to Carnaval Court - and I love shooting on that one.

i feel there is too much randomness to have dice setting make any difference to the average player.

That doesn't mean dice control is impossible, but assuming that it can be done with any consistency, I'd be willing to bet the number of people that can do it is pretty small.

we had this discussion almost a year ago, I agree
much like any sport you need some natural ability and lots of practice to be consistent in having any influence over pure random
but when you do?, it's pretty fun

In my opinion every experience craps player all have they own way of setting the dice.. I have seen some stack them and toss them. Some will set them they way they want them and rub the felt then throw or blow on their fingers. It seems they all have their own way and they swear it works for them. So it all depends on what all works for the shooter. It seems like most of the tables are hard and dice are bouncing all over and not landing softly like they should for a controlled shooter.

It's BS, in my opinion. A good reason to always set dice is to eat up time, since theo = avg bet x time. So the more time it takes, the more theo.

a hard table is better actually, springy padding or fresh tight felt gives more bounce
definitely not what you want when you're trying to reduce extra bounce and spins
theoretically with enough practice and skill you should be able to get lots of dead cat bounces
but I think if you threw even 2 of those they kick you off the table

+1 PT... I actually love when the dice come to a shooter, throws all 5 of them 2" in the air, picks 2, he sets them, rolls them around his chips a couple times, prays for a sec, makes love to them and throws a 2. Or establishes the point and does it all over again and boom! 7..

I agree with pretty much everything you said. At the end of the day, I won't second guess myself if I kept my regular rhythm and rolled the same. I'll just take the lumps as they come. That's the casino life.

I don't know if dice control is real, but who knows if it's possible. The dice control people even say bad rolls will happen most of the time, but it's fire when they get their roll just right in a session. I'm no dice control guy, but even I've had a couple of really good rolls. I just say shoot how you want, and I'll try to keep my chips out of your way, haha.

even experienced card counters get a cold session
neither setting or counting is a gaurantee, at the end of the day it's just an advantage at best, but not magic

Good point and frankly, one I never really considered.

I'll make a point to slow down my rolls a bit going forwad. I've always been a "chucker".
