How much does it cost each year to have your car registered with the state of Nevada? I live in the Chicago area. We pay about $100 dollars to the state of Illinois each year. Also, what is the cost of renewing your drivers license in Nevada. Thanks!

The cost to register is based on the value of the car. When we lived there we had a 97 & 98, so it wasn't too bad.
The killer was the cost of car insurance. More than double what we paid here in Wisconsin.

Sorry, I don't recall what license fees were. Here in WI they have gone to once every 8 years. IIRC, NV was 3 years.

you'll probably get better info just spending 10 minutes on the Nevada DMV website - http://www.dmvnv.com/.

    DMV site

Thank you Shifter, the DMV site you provided answers my questions! I heard stories of it costing about $500 per year. It is not costly at all. Thanks again

You can type in specific information here to get an estimate or actual cost (w/VIN #).

I typed in $45,000 for a 2013 automobile and the cost is $828 for the year. Nevada charges based on the FMV of the vehicle (like Indiana, unlike Illinois which charges a flat amount).

My brother bought a new car last year and paid around $500 to the state for registration. Having an old beater is the way to go under this system.

This is the information that you provided
    Vehicle Identification Number: n/a
Vehicle Type: Auto, Pickup Truck, Passenger Van, Motor Home
    Vehicle Year: 2013
    Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price: $45000
    County: CLARK

Approximate Fee Breakdown As of Thursday, August 1, 2013
    Basic Registration Fee: $33
    Governmental Services Tax: $630
    Supplemental Gov. Services Tax: $158
    Motor Safety Fee: n/a
    Total Estimated Registration Fees: $821

Don't forget the $17 to $25 fee for a smog check every year too.

Also, expect your insurance to go up. Mine increased about 30% from what I paid in the Chicago 'burbs.

My annual car registration for a 2007 Taurus has come down from about $350 to $216 this year. It goes down every year as the car gets older. If I remember correctly, this was only $80 or so per year in Illinois, regardless of what kind of car.

Car insurance (full coverage) is about $1,500/year at the moment. Way higher than I ever paid in Illinois. I don't drive much (about 5,000 miles a year), but I'm paying for all the bad drivers in Nevada. :(

And yes, there's the annual smog check, which averages about $20.

It used to go down every year as the vehicle got older, but was frozen by the legislature a couple years ago during the recession. It was a way of "stopping the bleeding" without raising anything. I expect it will be addressed in the 2015 Legislative session ( ours only meets every two-2 years) and returned to the old depreciation formula.
