Hey there. Just found this site a few days ago and it is awesome!

Next weekend will be my fifth trip to Vegas. This time all old school. Staying downtown and hitting all the lesser known casinos north of downtown and east of the strip.

Im looking forward to seeing more of the "real" Vegas!

If anyone has tips about great small local casinos I should hit up, let me know.

    Downtown

I tried downtown once, the best casino there is the golden nugget. Not as fun as the strip and the smaller casinos closes midnight. Buffet is cheaper but lower quality of course. Have lots of $5 minimum blackjack but you can get that at bill's in the strip. If you're looking for deals, go farther in summerlin. I stayed at JW Marriott once and they're very linient in giving comp dollars for buffet. I didn't even finished using all of them up when we left. And they let you keep hitting or double down after split aces on blackjack.

    you will love it!
    where are you staying?
there are some that prefer the strip and some that prefer downtown so don`t be nervous about your decision.

I think the nugget is the most "strip like" but far from the best casino downtown and there are so many awesome places to eat downtown also.

the casinos on fremont are all open 24 hours just like the strip except for mermaids and bayou.

there are lots of great people on here that will give you lots of ideas to make your trip even better.

Totally agree that the Nugget is not the best casino downtown. Terrible video poker paytables, high craps minimums and poor beverage service.

Try Fremont, The Cal, Main Street Station or the Four Queens. No hotels/casinos close, they are all 24/7. Free shuttle at The Cal to Sam's Town. If you have a car, give Suncoast a try. Also a Boyd property. You can also take the WAX bus from downtown to Suncoast for $2.

Honestly, I wouldn't waste my time going to Texas Station, Fiesta or Santa Fe Station.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Ill be staying at the El Cortez. I love the feel of the hotel and at $22 per night you cant beat the price. It is true that some pefer the strip however after staying on the strip my first three trips I would prefer to stay elsewhere. Last trip we spent most of our time on Boulder Hwy and loved the liberal bj rules at the Longhorn.
