    Trips to Las Vegas:

    My Trip Report

Flew out on Christmas night after a wonderful meal with my parents and came back on December 30. Both trips the security line took less than five minutes. Score! I accidentally walked in to the backscatter Xray line in SJC, after explaining to my dad at dinner that there was only a miniscule chance of being selected for that scan over a metal detector. I think I got rabies! Xraybies. Christmas Xraybies!

Flight out was supposed to be delayed 45 minutes, and it ended up taking off on time. Flight back was supposed to be delayed 15 minutes, and took off an hour late. I think the tote board still says "11:15" for the 11:00 AM flight.

$8.50 Coors Light draft waiting to leave to LAS. Wow. No wonder they don't put the prices on the menu. Got two drinks each flight and only used one coupon. Got one drink for Christmas, one for being nice to the Flight Attendant, and one for I don't know what. Maybe just not being a pain like the guy who was demanding free drinks for the delayed flight.

On the flight out, I sat next to Dr. Phlegm, but I had my Ipod so it wasn't too bad. The flight back I left my Ipod in my checked bag (whoops!) and took my customary seat in the back row on the aisle. A couple sat next to me who kiss loudly (I can't transcribe it, but its just gross.) The guy next to me was a rookie flyer, I guess. He startled me with his kneejerk reactions of fright to any turbulence. He annoyed me with his lack of respect for my space when his 90-pound girlfriend was right next to him in the window seat, and by their kissy noises they were not having a fight. He put the cherry on top we landed. I do not stand up as we are the last row. He gets up and does the under-the-baggage-compartment-lurch with about half the plane left. When the next to last row gets up, he asks to move past me. I don't remember the words, but dude! WE ALL WANT TO GET OFF THE PLANE! Do you really need to climb over me in an effort to be 115th off the plane instead of 116th?

Finally did the sensible thing at LAS. Checked my bag and printed my boarding pass at the skycap. Tipped him two bucks and the guy thanked me like he hadn't been tipped in awhile. Tough times I guess. Walked past the humanity queued at the ticket counter to check out the security line. There was maybe 40 people waiting to get scanned, not bad at all. This time I remembered that LAS no longer has smoking rooms (I'm a sort of re-formed smoker, but when in Vegas...) so I was able to burn a couple before I passed security. Oh, and saw actress Jeri Ryan in the airport. She's still looking good!

Stayed at the Flamingo for the first time, comped. I was feeling a little saucy, so I tried the $20 trick and got an "Executive Suite", I think. It was on the 27th floor, in the corner. Spacious, comfortable, and a fridge in the room. The decor was dated, but I can live with that. Overall, a great room for three nights at $6.67 per night. The location of the hotel couldn't be better.

Stayed at the Four Queens for the first time too. Its very similar in quality to its neighbor Fitzgeralds, which I am a big fan of. It did not have the same feel though. Clean and dated, but they bought the room, a couple of meals and $20 in slot play. Not bad!

Johnny Rockets - Flamingo- open 24 hours, so I hit this twice. Got a double burger, ate half and saved the rest for breakfast. I never knew cold hamburgers were so good in the morning!

Hot Dog Stand - Bill's - $2 for a hot dog, it lasted under a minute. I should have gone back for two more.

Bougainvillea Café - Terrible's - 4.99 MONSTER plate of spaghetti and meatballs. Hit the spot at the end of this day.

Tropical Breeze Cafe - Flamingo - just wanted some breakfast. Ordered the corned beef skillet. It was half corned beef, half grease, and overpriced. Avoid.

McDonald's - MGM Grand - yep, same as at home just twice as expensive. BUT QUICK!

Diner - Binion's - Ate here for free because of a promo swipe coupon. Had a sandwich and it was good!

Room Service - Four Queens - Breakfast on Wednesday and Thursday - hit the spot and VERY affordable. Two tasty and filling breakfasts were 23 bucks with tax and tip.

I must have eaten something else, but I can't think of what it could be!

O'Shea's - The closest you can get to Reno in Vegas. Beer Pong, cheap beers. Love it and hate it.

Harrahs' - Played 80 bucks in 3 card poker. I think that lasted ten minutes.

Casino Royale - cheap ATM (was it 99 cents?), cheap beer, worthless coupons and worthless-er "crazy points madness". I played LOTR there forever, but the network was down.

Venetian - Joined Club Grazie online for extra $15 free slot play. The guys at the booth would not let me add that to the $25 ACG slot play coupon, so just got the $25. That lasted about ten minutes, with the same cocktailer passing me by 3 times.

Imperial Palace - cramped, smokey, hot. fun.

Flamingo - aiiite. Had fun at the Garden Bar with Aubrey watching the game on Sunday morning. He made me some good drinks, as I spilled one all over my shirt within minutes of leaving. Conversely, no cocktailers anywhere at 5AM.

Bill's - awesome. Made money at each game I played. I tried the craps with the computer monitors. Man is it slow. I tipped the dealer. By her reaction, I may have been the first ever to tip on that game.

Westin - just stay away. another blood bath. Used a couple of matchplays, which are the kiss of death for me. I am now o-for-2-trips on matchplays, probably 0-for-10 coupons. Not one win.

Ellis Island - cheap beer, fun time.

Tuscany - Like a casino in a nice Holiday Inn. In Italy, I guess. Or Fresno. Friendly people!

Terrible's - Joined LVA for $12 to use the $100 Terrible's promo. You can guess how that went. Hadn't been there in more than a decade. Its so cramped. Worse than I remember.

Cosmopolitan - Really liked this place. It was absolutely filthy with pretty cocktailers who like to flirt. And they kept bringing beers faster than I could drink them down! This place has so much more character than the Aria Mall next door.

New York New York - Monkees slot machine paid me a couple of bucks, and that's a good thing. For staff friendliness, look elsewhere.

Excalibur - Finally played the Airplane! slot. I couldn't get the cocktailer to notice me. She kept walking by and walking by. I kept sinking my money in this game until I was ready to leave. Of course thats when the cocktailer takes my order. In this case, I stay a little while, the drinks start flowing, and I eventually turn the loss into a tidy little profit. Nice!

Tropicana - I don't know if the new decor is an improvement, but its definitely new. Blindingly new.

MGM Grand - doesn't do it for me.

    Four Queens - .....meh.

Fitzgeralds - love the $1 PBR.

Binion's - I seem to earn comp dollars here faster than anywhere, or maybe I just never use them. Anyway, great cocktail service and the Mountains of Cash promotion (or whatever its called) always earns something useful. This time I got a free drink and a free meal. There is a new promo slot machine there. You need 4500 points to earn the lowest prize. I got 6 points. The bartenders at the west bar were nice as always.

Vegas Club - lost so quick I couldn't even grab a free cocktail. Luckily they have $2 Coronas.

Golden Gate - Always have a good time here. Played Airplane! again, and asked the nice lady next to me to do the picks during the bonus. Thanks for the extra hundo! Also, the most gorgeous blue-eyed brunette cocktailer was serving drinks. Don't know why she was downtown, but it was nice!

Gold Spike - first time. last time.

Tried the monorail for the first time. It was okay in that I was already at MGM, which has a stop, and wanted to go to Flamingo, which also has a stop. Its still a pretty good walk. For $5 one way, I can't see riding it ever again unless I want to go from the MGM to the Convention Center, and that's unlikely. They really missed the mark with this.

Airport to Flamingo - right down Paradise, about $15 bucks. Nice Irish bloake.

    Flamingo to Four Queens -
Me: "Can we go to the Four Queens?"
Cabbie "You want to go to Four Season right?"
    Me: "No, the Four Queens....downtown..."
    Cabbie: (confusedly) "...oh..."
    Me: "Can we take Paradise?"
Cabbie: "I don't know that way, I'll take the freeway"
Me: "Uh, no, I'm not paying for you to go that way"
Cabbie: "how do you get there by Paradise?"

A cabbie. Does not. Know how. To take Paradise. From. The. Flamingo. to Downtown.

It's not like I said, "Can you get me to cousin Skeeter's house and take 2nd street?". In retrospect I should have gotten out right then as things only went downhill. But I was paralyzed trying to fathom that she could only get downtown by freeway. I thought surely once she got started.... I mean..... well, maybe I'm crazy. I'm a little bit wiser today for the experience.

Anyway, the die was cast. I had to guide her to Paradise. She never went above 29 mph the entire way there though there was no traffic and every car on the street was passing us. She took some ill-advised turns that I didn't catch on to (hey, I don't do this for a living) and ended up on Main Street. So, as she's driving past the FSE, I can't take it anymore. Where are you going?!?!? Long story short, I got into my first real argument with a cabbie. I threatened to call the Taxi authority, but decided she was not going to ruin my vacation any more and just wanted to be done with it. I got out beside Binion's. I paid her $21.00 on a $20.90(!) fare. I wanted the dime back out of principle, but apparently cabbies don't carry change. I should have stayed and got the Taxi authority out there, as I stewed on this episode for the next few hours anyway.

Surprisingly, I was stone sober for that experience.

Four Queens to Airport - right down Paradise. Told the guy I had $30 to get me there and he could decide how much he wanted for himself. We had a nice chat all the way there. He didn't drive like he was at Indy, but he kept moving. $23 fare, the rest for him. I was satisfied.

    Final Thoughts

Next time I get a bad feeling about a cabbie, I will just get to the nearest hotel and get out. I will be much happier wasting $5 or $10 and just ending the experience.

I can't believe how hot it was. Apparently it was 40's and 50's all week, but I was in jeans and t-shirt every day but the last when it got real windy.

Tell you what - if you keep your kids outside of the casinos, and off the Strip at a reasonable hour, I will not drink and smoke at Gymboree. Deal?

Hadn't stayed on the Strip in a long time, and had really become a Downtowner. I got some comps at the Flamingo, so I decided to give it a go. I loved it! I'll be back on the strip in July, and I think next trip will only feature a one-day cab ride downtown. Well, maybe I'll take the bus next time...

Fun read! I have decided not to let cabbies bother me … mostly. Actually, once I got so mad that I rented a car for the next 8 years, even if I didn't us it much. Of course, I don't drink and drive a rented car. Perhaps I've grown up.

    good report!

I agree about gold spike. went there during the day in november and couldn`t get a single drink. asked a passing security guy and he told us there were no drink girls working.

went to the bar with our "2 free cocktails" coupon from the american casino guide and asked for 2 paralyzers and were told bar shots only.

when we pointed out that the coupon says 2 free cocktails we were basically told tough luck.

guess they don`t want customers too bad.

A fun read; loved the not smoking at Gymboree line! We were long-hauled several times on our December trip, one time blatantly that led to an argument, me wanting to call taxi-authority and cab driver cussing me out and refusing to give me his number. I noticed a common denominator - each time it was a Nellis cab. In future, if the next cab in line is Nellis, I'll stand back and wait for the first one that isn't.

Your report is a great read, thanks for posting, and sounds like a really fun trip!

As for the monorail, I agree a one way ticket may or not be worth, depending on far you go, but a one day or three pass can be a good deal if you use it enough.
