We haven't opened gifts on Christmas eve for over 35 years. It's always been Christmas morning. My kids don't know any differently, nor have they ever asked. Even though they are now all adults, their tradition has not waivered. So I guess we will see what's under the tree tomorrow.

I got to spend some time visiting my Dad. It's always been our tradition to spend Christmas Eve together and that hasn't stopped since he passed in 2006. Then followed that up by getting to spend some time with my goddaughter and now I'm getting my first viewing of A Christmas Story.

I wouldn't trade those for anything :santa

    I like it.

My immediate family stopped giving gifts to each other for Christmas several years ago - and we now spend quality time together instead. It was the best decision we've made. The gift of time is much more satisfying and the memories will last as long as we live.

I got dealt 4 aces tonight while playing quarter Ultimate X poker at Grand Casino Hinckley where we are spending the night. 2 times multiplier on one hand, kicker on another. Grand total of $1,100. Boyfriend and I opened presents before we drove up. We both got each other electric toothbrushes. Are we creative or what!

    Happy Holidays everyone!!!

Yes, these things are priceless. My Father-in-law passed away in 2006 also. His birthday is Dec. 24th. My youngest daughter was closest to him and still gets misty eyed as she visits his resting place on this day. She misses him very much.

Being with family during the holidays are gifts that are more meaningful and memorable than material ones.

My family does this also. We just cherish our time together. My children are all grown up and have their own lives now so we just casually meet up on the 24th and go to the movies, lol!

Then on Christmas Day we watch the grandchildren open their presents (the young'uns still get presents) and have dinner together. Being with family is the best gift for me, since unfortunately the rest of the year is hectic, busy, and stressful and I don't get to see the family that often.

    Right on, Bill.

Our family has always had a tradition of exchanging gifts on Christmas Eve and then the kids would always get a bunch more from Santa on Christmas morning. As I'm a few days from 40 and the youngest amongst us kids is pushing 30, Santa has been out of the equation for decades but the gift exchange on Christmas Eve has remained (with mom still putting a few goodies in our stockings for Christmas morning).

Tonight was the first year we instituted a $50 limit per person. And it was probably the best Christmas Eve that I can remember. The price limit made all the gifts so much more thoughtful. And instead of the seemingly endless, "who's next...is it Rachel's turn", we were done with the present opening fairly quickly and spent the rest of the evening in mom and dad's (TV-less) living room sipping wine, reminiscing about Christmases long past, remembering my brother-in-law's father who passed this spring and getting excited about the newest member of the family arriving in a few months. The $50 limit helped make for a priceless evening.

I certainly hope everyone else is able to spend this Christmas (or Hanukkah or New Years or whatever) with people they love.

Oh, and the best gift I received was a sixer of a beer I enjoy from my sister and BIL. But the best part was that they wrapped each beer and the package separately. So it was a perfect six pack decked out in Christmas wrapping paper - very cute, wish I would have snapped a pic.

I agree! The older I get and having lost both parents during the holiday season...I can't help but think each Christmas, none of us knows when it will be the last. It's about spending time together and just enjoying. My Auntie and Uncle (who are my surrogate parents since losing mine) are here. Everyone just went to bed after I fed them into a coma. The big meal is tomorrow. My favourite part of Christmas has become sitting down and enjoying Christmas dinner together and I LOVE hosting it!

Christmas slippers usually on Christmas eve. I always fly home to Vancouver where ever I am for a few weeks to spend the time with family. I used to have to fly from Europe so the flight from austin is a lot better.

Two phone calls , the first was from my daughter in the morning telling us she was down with a stomach virus. Sad cause she's alone 70 miles away but the last thing she wanted to do was leave her couch except to run to the bathroom
The second was from a host at Golden Nugget AC who I rarely ask for anything. I left him a message at 10am to see if he would comp us a room for Mrs JG's b-day which is a thu. night in jan.
He actually returned my call at 8:30 p.m. last night ,I was in the garage with my son and buddy drinking and smoking cigars, told him Merry Christmas and wished he was here cause we're enjoying the unusually warm weather. He gave us a compted room.
Mrs. JG gave me a nice fleece and some flannel lounge pants . I would live in these from Nov. till April if I could.

+1. The kids (me and my brother) give small gifts to our parents but we don't expect anything in return. This is one holiday I enjoy spending time with my family since we never do anything with our extended family, so it's much easier to deal with.

There were presents here/there and stockings for all on Christmas Day, but what we received was joy and love, a house full of family and a kitchen working overtime. Nothing's better.

(OK, I will say the SI cover that Marcus Mariota signed to me is pretty cool.)
