We went to our favorite outdoor place that overlooks a river for a couple of drinks today. Our favorite outdoor table was taken, so we took one with not quite as good a view.

The party of four left and we grabbed the table our, favorite table which is for drinks only, no food service. Anyway, their CC transaction was still on the table so we peeked. 4 glasses of wine for the four of them, $28 and they left a buck for the tip. The server brought out their drinks.

Cheap bastards or not? What say you?

We had two drinks each and the server brought them to our outdoor table. Bill total $24 and I tipped $5.

I'd call $1 tip for 4 drinks cheap, yes.

No question; cheap. It almost seems like they were trying to make it a point by not at least rounding up to an even $30. Perhaps there is more to the story than can be told from the receipt. Poor service perhaps?

Cheap. Can't imagine the service for 4 drinks was that bad.

Where was the wine from? California wines always deserve a generous tip. Always! !:D:wave:

While the 20% rule of thumb need not apply for drinks only (particularly pricey ones), anything less than $1 per drink is indeed cheap.

    Hi Joe
    Maybe they were Euro's/UK's
as tipping is not a normal practice?

I don't know how legit that is anymore. Granted one does not necessarily tip in Europe as we do here, but I think that tipping customs would be a "Know This" sort of factoid any traveler would review prior to departure.

OP: yeah, that is cheap. OK, maybe it's me...but I've noticed a lot of people seem to think that anything less than [expletive laden sexual reference deleted] from the waitstaff constitutes 'bad service' ('He didn't'...'she didn't' blah-blah-blah). It's four drinks for $28. Round up (at minimum). Granted, I am a generous tipper, but still...how difficult is it to haul four glasses to the table? Is it such a simple task that it does not warrant a tip? Truthfully, were it me, the tip would have been $1 / drink.

Very cheap. I am a good tipper (20-25% for high bills, often more than 25% for small tabs). But, I also agree with others that I don't feel 20% is mandatory on "just drinks", if it's an easy expensive drink---just "open-and-pour" type of drink-- like a good/expensive glass of wine, but a dollar a drink is absolute minimum for me. (If a beer is $4.00 I'm still tiping a dollar, a nice glass of wine I might not tip 20%, but a few dollars)...and it makes a difference if at the bar or table service. If they have to walk/carry, even more reason to tip standard.

Even at the bar, if it's a cocktail that takes some work, then I am ok with 20%+. But a dollar for 4 drinks? Must have been something else going on, as that seems like more of a statement than what someone would honestly consider an ok tip.

P.S. I am pretty frugal...on everything but tips.

Not just cheap bastards but they were bastardly cheap especially considering it was table service. Also, since outdoor seating, I bet the server had to go inside to get those wines. I was a server in another life. Hated doing outside service. Such a pain getting the door open with trays full. Yep, I lost a couple. It was at a swanky Golf Club. One tray full of expensive wines so I relate. The other full of four 50+ each priced meals. OUCH.

I want to give them the benefit of the doubt although it would be hard since they actually put $1 on the CC for the TIP. Sometimes, when I pay for others with a credit card, the others will pay the TIP, and I'll give the cash to the server.

It's cheap, but if they got bad service they tipped a buck too much.

All indications show that they were cheap. But we won't know for sure if that tip was because of being cheap or as a message for bad service. Sure it's not hard to get four drinks that are relatively easy to prepare but we cannot rule out the possibility that the server had a bad attitude or showed unprofessional behavior.

Some valid points brought up here, but if you are at a "drinks only" no food service table and you only have one round of drinks. I don't know maybe they wanted a second drink and the bartender didn't come around. But you know how people look when they become annoyed looking for their server and can't find them. I didn't see any of that.

We had two rounds and it was the same bartender who served us as them and we didn't have to wait between rounds. I'm sticking with my original opinion. Cheap!
