Good post. I've been meaning to order that book since someone else mentioned it on here but forgot about it. I read another book called "Addiction by Design" which is predominantly about machine games with a lot of source material from slot manufacturers, casino execs, etc. They described it a little different, they found that gamblers could detect changes in the hold percentage but it was tied to their "time on device" or TOD. What the authors found is that TOD was one of the main areas of focus for slot manufacturers and casino execs because empirically it turned out to be the most important thing to slot players, not the hold specifically. So that is what slot designers focus more on - the distribution of payments and other things so TOD remains high despite what the hold is set to.

This is both true and false. It is true for lower volatility games, where one can make a VERY rough estimate of "how long money lasts while gaming." It is impossible on machines where one could actually win any decent amount on a spin however, again because of the immense number of possible outcomes.

Server based gaming has made manipulation of slots possible to an amazing degree. Picking winners is now possible. Why would tech companies laud the ability of their software to do things which are not common practice? Slot machines have always been a poor bet but the level of tech sophistication is making them outright riggable, as if 15-20% holds aren't criminal enough.

Why would casinos set them any higher then they need to keep people coming back? It makes no sense to set them higher some days.

If you really want to know the regs of changing the paybacks on server games or even on the older ones, google it. They were all pretty much published in the press at the time when they were under consideration by the gaming commission. All I can recall is that the game has to sit idle for four hours before that they can make any changes. Personally, I think they would be more interested in changing the game out completely over fooling with the percentages. I don't think that they are twisting the screws tighter every time you turn your back for a couple seconds.
