I recently received a couple of free stay offers at the California downtown. I have been to the casino before, but I have never stayed there. How do the rooms compare to Main Street Station? Are they about the same?
Any reason a solo-traveling, thirtysomething male wouldn't want to stay there?

Downtown Vegas is definitely more my style. I have enjoyed previous stays at Main Street Station, Gold Spike, and El Cortez.

    Thank you, kindly.

The rooms at the Cal are fine. My wife and I stay there every March for NASCAR. They have a small bathroom, but if you are solo no problem. The casino is a blast, good vib. If you have an offer, I say stay at the Cal.

Totally agree with the previous poster. Rooms are clean and comfortable, especially for a solo trip. Fun casino, and being connected to MSS is a plus.

Thanks for the response. With the Southwest Airlines sale that started today, it looks like I'll be able to swing a cheap trip! Of course, the "cheap" only applies to airfare and hotel, the gambling and strip clubs will likely make the trip rather expensive.

Actually the west tower at the california is newer and the bathroom is much larger than the east tower. The west tower bathrooms are rather roomy, tub/shower, toilet and long vanity/counter space, they probably could have put in 2 sinks and still have lots of room for your stuff (although the toilet might be in the way).

The west tower has a small "closet" area to hang your clothes next to the bathroom along the wall. It is maybe 4' wide. In the area there is a fridge below it. In that area there is also a wall safe, 1 key only and if you lose the key you have to pay a locksmith to open the lock and replace the key.

The east tower bathrooms are smaller.

I would say that the MSS and cal rooms are comparable and I actually would rather stay in the Cal's west tower (facing west). It is a closer walk than the MSS rooms. I also like it because the west tower elevators open right up in the casino and is near the dining areas and the 2nd floor walkway to get to the MSS. You can hear the trains from the Cal rooms (facing west) but you don't hear the freeway that you could at the MSS (facing north). you get a nice view of west vegas, can see the mountains (red rock?) and snow during the winter.

The Cal east tower elevators open up (near the buddha statue) near the front desk and is near the parking structure.

I think you will be fine at the Cal (or MSS), as long as you aren't overly particular, the rooms are standard downtown rooms. They also renovated the rooms a few years ago so they should be in decent shape.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough response, makikiboy.
I'm not overly particular, so I think staying at the Cal will be enjoyable.

My group has stayed at the California Club our last 4-5 trips. Pictures of our room from our last trip (west tower).

No problem Jimbo. hope you enjoy your stay there. Unfortunately (or fortunately) you have to put up with all us hawaiians staying there, lol

northerngirl got a good picture of the west tower bathroom (thanks NG!). the shower is the area behind the door. I also like the shower curtain rod, it's the curved type so it makes the shower seem more roomy.
