What's the difference in redeeming a buffet pass vs. 2 free buffets? If you use the passes you have to stay at an MGM property?

Not sure I understand the question but free pass is good for one person and 2 buffets for 2 people. The ones with a key icon require a stay and the ones without don't.

There is an award for 2 buffet passes, and an award for 2 buffets. I don't understand what the difference is? Is one just a line pass because that would be dumb.

They are the same thing, 2 passes to eat at the buffet. They call them 2 different things, most likely to distinguish that one needs a hotel stay to use, while the other doesn't and is more expensive.
