I know this is not new news, but a new, brief article from DTLV documenting how the Fremont Street Experience came to be:

Only missing photos of the construction..

I'm confused by this part... Did Main Street Station close for awhile?

"Downtown casino owners’ (and Las Vegas city officials’) sense of foreboding crested in 1992. Main Street Station, the latest attempt to revive the snake-bit Holiday International/Park hotel-casino, had closed less than a year after receiving $17 million in municipal redevelopment funds. With a trio of new resorts (MGM Grand, Treasure Island, and Luxor) set to bring more than 10,000 new rooms to the Strip and Circus Circus’ Grand Slam Canyon offering something that couldn’t be replicated Downtown, they felt it was time to act."

Yes it did, then Boyd bought it and made it profitable.

Main Street Station began as a brainchild of the creator of "Church St. Station" in Orlando. It was designed to be a paid admission venue with a casino on the side and went belly up within one year.

Boyd bought the property and connected the California to MSS, opening the hotel at first as overflow for the Cal. Later, Boyd reopened the casino and restaurants.

In article it says 10 hotels formed FSE. I thought DTG, ElCortez, and Plaza were not part of it. Not sure if LVC was either
