I'm going to Vegas in mid novmber for a convention for 5 days where my hotel is booked.

Afterwards I'm going to stay an extra 3 days on my own dime.

I want to stay at one of the center strip hotels. what is my best chance of a good deal? should I book now in advanced of wait till I'm in town last minute?

Book now, through the hotel website, with a rate that can be canceled, then check back to see if rates drop.

What's your price range? Are these weekends or weeknights? How nice a room do you want/care about?

The convention is at the Mandalay Bay where I'm also staying to begin with. The idea is that after 5 days I would like to move to the center of Strip to experience that part as well.

The period I'm looking for is from sat-tue (21 - 24 of november). My bugdet is between 100 - 150 $ pr night including resort fee and tax. I'm more interressed in a good view and hotel atmosphere than nice furniture. Especially being able to sit and enjoy an evening cocktail and enjoying the view of the strip would be nice.

At that price range, including a Saturday night and paying rack rate....I'd go with Harrah's. Actually, it looks like the Linq is pretty cheap those dates. I'd probably go with the Linq. It's a step up from Harrah's, and the Linq area (next to the hotel) sounds like the kind of area you're looking for.

go the multiple hotels mid strip and price them out. The Fri/Sat will be the more expensive ones. Almost all of the hotels have a monthly rate calendar so you can get an idea of what is out there.

Mid strip you are probably looking at a CET hotel in that range. Cosmo/City Centre/Bellagio are all likely to be more.

This rate calendar should help you pick between the options in your price range. All of these hotels will have a resort fee in the $25-30 range. If you have a TR card you might get a discount.

Looks like Paris and Ballys want to force you to stay the friday, Linq/Harrah's/Flamingo are comfortably in your range, PH is at the top of your range and Cromwell and Caesars are a bit higher but within shouting distance of your range.

The lower end places will be pretty comparable (although Linq is recently redone), so tons of flexibility depending on where exactly you want to be (I tend to think of center strip as proximity to the Bellagio fountains, you may differ). I'd think your best shot at a nice view would be Flamingo.

You could do Planet Hollywood, it's avg $109 a night for those dates. $465 total. They have the best location to me..
Or I would check out the LINQ since it was just remodeled you can get that for $353 total. It's still old.. but remodeled.. if that makes sense. Still gonna be kinda small and unglamorous, but it should be clean.

If you want to spend a little more

You can get Aria for $516 total, with a $150 dining credit ($50 per day). I would certainly take this over PH, worth the extra $75 and you could potentially get 3 or 4 free meals out of the deal.

I can see I need to up my budget a bit to 200$ pr. night and right now I'm split between the cosmo and the Aria.

Any pros/cons between the two or anyother ideas?

I haven't stayed at Cosmo or Aria, but if you book directly with a hotel, you have until the day before or so to cancel. Register for something in your budget like Bally's, PHO or Linq as people suggested. Something you could stand staying at even if it doesn't wow you. Then you have your flag planted and can look go through options, check discount sites or wait to see if you get any email offers to see if you can get a deal on one of your wow properties.

    Finally!

From what I've seen and heard, theres nothing "old" about the Ling anymore (other than maybe the elevators). Plus geographically the Ling is much more "center strip" than PHo. The new mall between Ling and Osheas and Flamingo , The High roller, The Brooklyn bowl etc. definitely would be a "newer" look than anything the OP would see at PHo (just my 2 cents)

Also would suggest the Linq...you can't get more in the middle of the action...that's how the Imperial Palace stayed open so long. We stayed there as local last month and the room was very, very nice...bring your own K-cups. Casino is typical CET in terms of game and odds and you have the shopping complex right next door. We are staying at PH in November and would actually consider switching over if the same free deal was available.

FYI...Border Grill at Mandalay is pretty good for dinner or drinks...have a good time. (search for a groupon and if you can't find it make your fall back Hussongs although you are dropping in class. Make sure you walk over to the Delano (connected to MB) just to see the entrance and the "big rociks."
