    My Trip Report

    Set up:
This is my fifth trip to Vegas in five years, and as most know it is my first without my wife, Brandy. Brandy is almost finished with school as a medical assistant and has to do one month of an internship before taking her certification exams at the end of the month so she couldn’t make it on this trip and new how much I liked going to Vegas during the Super Bowl so she gave me the okay to go either on a solo trip or along with a friend. I first mentioned this to a fellow steward and good friend at work, Jody, and he jumped all over the chance at getting back to Vegas since he has not been in almost 20 years. So over a couple weeks we planned out everything and came to an agreement. I would pay for the airfare and he would pay for the room. We stayed at the Riviera because, personally, I like the place and that is where we were planning on watching the game. Airfare for 2 through Air Tran was only like $330 and the total cost of the room was like $316 so it came out just about even. Through out this trip report I am planning on mentioning how much everything cost so that if any Vegas virgins were wandering how much it cost to go to Vegas and have a descent time they will know. (At least on what I consider a good time) My budget on this trip was $1000 for gambling and $300 for eats, drinks, shows, cab/bus fares and souvenir/gifts. I have no idea what Jody’s budget was and did not care.

I am not a professional writer or do I care to even get close. If you notice a bunch of errors, please don’t laugh too hard. You gotta remember that I am Texas educated.
So here it is my version of having a good time in Vegas.

    Day One:

I awoke at 5 am and called Jody to make sure he was up. He was and mentioned how he had not slept all night. He only lives about 25 minutes from me and I only live about 45-50 minutes from the DFW. He arrived at my house a little after 6 am and we were off.
Once at DFW check in and security was a breeze, same boring stuff. Since we were there 2 hours and 16 minutes early we decided to go to one of the airport bars. Jody had 3 bloody Maries and I had 3 crown and cokes so we were pretty toasted by the time we got on the plane. Once in flight Jody had rum and coke and I had a jack and coke.
Arrival to Vegas was on time despite the fact that we were 20 minutes late taking off from DFW. We both grabbed a quick smoke in one of the lounges at McCarran and took the train-tram thingy to the main terminal to get our luggage. While we waited the 40 minutes it took to get our luggage I went outside to one of the shuttle stations and bought 2 one way tickets to our hotel room. ($10) I made a deal with Jody that I would pay the fare to the hotel if he paid on the way back. That was my first bet that I knew would pay off.
Once we got our luggage we were on the shuttle bus and we were off. There was only one stop prior to ours and that was at the Hilton. We both went and stood in what seemed a long line to check in. While Jody waited in line I went t to the bar and got Jody another rum and coke and I had another crown and coke. Check in went faster than I thought and about 15 minutes later we were unpacking in our crappy little room on the 3rd floor.
Once unpacked we went downstairs and decided we better get something to eat since we planned on drinking a lot we did not want to get plastered too fast. We went to Rivera’s coffee shop, Katy’s. We both had a pretty big burger and fries and 2 beers a piece. The burger was okay. It’s really hard to screw up a burger. I had a 2 for 1 entrée coupon I printed off of the Rivs web site so the total came to around $24 but that was with four beers. We split that in half and it came to only $12 a piece plus tax. The lady checking us out just took 50% off our bill instead of just the entrees. That was a pretty bad mistake on her part but pretty cool to me only because she was bitching about us using the coupon to begin with. Well on we go.
Jody really wanted to see NyNy casino so we decided to head south. We both bought the $5 24 hour passes since we planned on using the bus the entire trip. This is really a great deal. The bus is already really packed and we got on right in front of Slots of Fun. This is my first trip over a weekend and I did not realize how busy they would already be. Usually Brandy and I get here on a Sunday morning. By this time it is already about 3:30 pm and traffic on the strip is starting to back up. Never the less we make it down to NyNy after about 30 minutes. We get inside and I lose about $40 playing around on some slots. The drink service sucks here so I ended up buying a beer from one of the many bars that this place has. We check the place out for a couple hours and nothing much going on so we decide to walk across to the Excalibur and take the tram down to Mandalay. Once in Mandalay We check out the black jack tables. Too high for me at $25 per hand. We drank a few rum and cokes from one of the casino bars while playing video poker. Did a lot of staring at the nice looking women in this place. I had few women make a comment or two about my cowboy hat. At least two people said,†You must be from Texas?†On our way out I decided to drop a $20 in one of the Elvis slots. On the first pull I hit for $25. On the third pull I got the bonus spin. It hit for another 100 credits. That’s $50 already. I played my $20 down and cashed out. By this time it was 8:00 pm so we decided to catch a cab back down to the Riviera. I figured that traffic would be so bad that I would lose my buzz by the time we got off the bus. The cab driver was pretty cool. He was telling us about a couple strip joints that he could get us in at no cover. I told him that we were not ready for strip clubs yet and that we were planning on checking one out after the game on Sunday. He gave me his cell # and told me to give him a call. I think he gets some sort of commission for bringing them customers. Any way the cab fare was $16 plus tip which came to $20. I paid since I was lucky on the Elvis slot. Once back at the Riviera I changed into some shorts and tennis shoes. Our next plan was to head downtown but we made a quick stop at Sluts of Fun to see what the craps were like. Way too busy there. We watched a bit, grabbed us a $1.29 hot dog and a $2 beer and jumped back on the bus to head downtown.
Once we got downtown we headed straight for La Bayou. I bought a full yard of the banana daiquiri. She (Angela) smiled and asked if I wanted one extra shot? I said no, I’ll take two extra shots of rum. It was the 184 proof or something. They were pretty good and the yards were nice to have because you don’t have to keep coming back every ten minutes to get more. The price was $9 but with tip it was $10. After getting more beads from Mermaids we headed to what is now my favorite place downtown, Las Vegas Club. First stop was at the black jack table. No $5 tables tonight, but they had a couple $10 tables. A guy was getting up from one at third base so I sat down and Jody pulled up a seat at Second. I bought in for $40. I think Jody bought in for $100. I remind you that I have never played bj in Vegas so I guess you can call me the rookie at the table. What better place than third is there? The dealer was an Asian woman in her mid 40s. Her name was Fran and I probably will never forget her. She was really cool and she helped me out a lot. We sat there and played for almost 4 hours. The cocktail service was great the entire night. The cocktail waitress name was Mindy and she was great as well. Jody and I both continued on with our rum and cokes after our La bayou drinks were done. Actually, I finished my La bayou drink first by knocking it over behind the dealer. The female pit boss came over quickly to clean it up and frowned at me for at least 10 minutes. I felt bad, but that didn’t last long. After all, after my first hour of bj I was up about $100. It felt good and I had a blast. The entire table was practically winning and having a blast cutting up with one another. The pit boss finally came over to change out the deck twice over the 4 hours. It was a single deck game and when we finished playing I colored up for the total of $225. I tipped the dealer $25. After all she was a big help. She could definitely tell I was a rookie. She had to warn me at least 5 times to only keep one hand on my cards, but she was real polite about it. I happily walked to the casino cage and cashed in my 2 black chips. Man, did that feel good? I believe Jody turned his $100 into almost $300. He tipped her $25 too and on our way out I gave the Mindy another $5. I didn’t even think about getting a player’s card or ask about being comped until after we left. I don’t know if it would have done any good. I played $10 to $25 a hand for almost 4 hours. Jody and I were both whooped so we headed down to the bus stop. It was almost 2am. When we got back to the Riv we played some $1 Elvis slots. I think I started with $20 and was up and down on the same machine for about an hour. Cocktail service is usually pretty good at the Riviera slots but on this day they sucked. I cashed my slot voucher out. I think it was for $20. No loss no gain on this one. I lost Jody some where around the casino. I figured he would find his own way to the room so I headed on up. I crashed about 3am. Jody told me the next day that he came in about 4am down about $40 from the Riviera slots. Not too bad for the first day.

I forgot to mention that I brought a full bottle of Captain Morgan’s Parrot Bay coconut rum and a full bottle of After Shock cinnamon schnapps to keep in the room. We would take a few shots before leaving the room everyday.

    Day Two:

I awoke at around 10am. I took a shower and got ready for another day. After I got ready I went downstairs to get a couple cups of coffee. There are no coffee pots in the room so I always get coffee from a coffee stand downstairs near check in. I got two large cups of the regular stuff ($4) and headed back to the room. I drank my coffee and flipped the channels for about 20 minutes while Jody finished getting ready. He seems to be real slow in the mornings. I am the type that can get up and go. I decided to tell him to meet me downstairs at Katy’s. I needed food, but once I got down there the line was a mile long. I decided that I wasn’t that hungry. I played some nickel slots for about 15 minutes until Jody came along. There are a bunch of nickel slots right next to the coffee shop so it wasn’t hard for Jody to spot me. By the time Jody came along I lost the $10 I put in the machine. After he seen how long the line was he agreed with me that we would just drink our breakfast.
We jumped on the 301 and were back downtown in about 15 minutes. We went straight back to LVC. Oddly there was now only one $10 table and one $25 and both were full, so we decided to see how busy the Upper Deck restaurant was upstairs at the LVC. There were only about 4 people in line so it didn’t take long to get seated. I had the country steak and eggs with toast and Jody had the prime rib and baked potato. The meal was okay, nothing to write home about. I didn’t finish all of mine, but Jody finished his. It took a long time for them to bring us our order, so we just sat there planning out our day. The total came to about $8 a piece plus tip.
After eating breakfast-lunch we checked out the bj tables again and still just the same 2 tables and still full with the same people. We headed across the street to the Nugget and this casino was really dead. Jody sat down at a Wheel of fortune machine and I headed back down to La Bayou. Angela was there again and she served me up with the same drink from the night before. ALL ABOARD…..THE GRAIN TRAIN JUST PULLED UP. She made a comment about remembering me from the night before and gave me $2 off my first drink. (My first of many that day) The drink was $7 with tip it was $8. I played a few slots there for about an hour losing about $50. I don’t know why I keep playing there slots. I never have had much luck there and didn’t look like too many more people were either. I decided to go look for Jody before heading back to the LVC. Not much luck finding him so I played a few slots. Kept switching from quarters to nickels and then back to quarters. Still couldn’t find Jody so I cashed my slot vouchers in at the cage. I don’t remember how much I played in slots, but I think it was about $40 and when I cashed out I think I had $100, so I didn’t do too bad. I walked down to LVC and no Jody there either. There was an open spot at second base at a single deck $10 table so I pulled up a seat and bought in for $50. I was up and down for about an hour. Before I knew it it was all gone. The dealer was pretty dry along with the rest of the table but I was getting the hang of it. The dealer didn’t have to get on to me one time this round. It was funny because on this day the drink service was pretty crappy. It seems when I am drinking I am winning and having a good time and when I am not then I am losing and having a crappy time. I decided to walk away before losing too much cash. I walked back down to La Bayou and boarded the grain train once again. This time she charged me the normal $9 plus tip it was $10. No slots this time but I am getting a nice collection of beads. On my way out some lady hit 5000 credits on a nickel monopoly machine. That’s the most I ever seen anyone win.
I went back to the Nugget to check up on Jody, but no luck finding him. I played a few of there slots and before I noticed how bad the alcohol had gotten to me I dropped about $100 in there slot machines. I looked around for Jody a little while longer and finally found him sitting at a $1 slot machine by the bathroom. He had a La Bayou drink as well so I guess he had made it out at one point. I asked him how he was doing and he gave me a look that made me sorry for asking. I told him to wait right here I was going to the bath room and would be right back. I came back about 5 minutes later and he was gone again. I looked around for him for about an hour to no avail. Oh well, he’s a big boy he’ll be okay. I left the Nugget and went to Binions. This is the first time that I have been there in two year. Last year when I was in Vegas with my wife it was all locked up. I checked out there crap tables and watched a few guys throw the dice awhile. Since I have never played craps, watching was all I was ready to do at this point. They seemed to be having a good time.
By now it was about 5pm and I needed another yard from La Bayou. Same as before and another $10 but this time I told her to mix it up with a few different flavors. I don’t know what the hell she put in there, but it was pretty damn good. Also by this time I am having a hard time feeling my face. I would say something to her and she wouldn’t say anything back. After repeating myself several times I realized what I was saying to her I was not saying out loud. I guess the alcohol was getting the best of me because I thought she could read my mind. I thought all women could do that, but apparently it’s just my wife. After making a fool of myself there I decided to go somewhere else and do it. If any of you reading this was in Vegas this weekend and wandering around on Freemont St. and seen some drunk sloshing around in a cowboy hat, it was me. I think I was even dancing and there was no music. Oh well, I think I was having a good time and everyone else watching was too. After a little bit of that I made it back into the Nugget to look around for Jody. I find him after about 30 minutes standing in front of a credit card cash advance machine with a crazed smile on his face just laughing his ass off. Apparently, Jody was feeling no pain neither. I walk over to him and yelled, “Hey Griswold, how ya doing?†The guy standing at the atm machine next to him just busted out with laughter. Jody didn’t think it was too funny. After prying a bit, I found out Jody is down about $500, all in slots. Dude you gotta get outta this place. He wasn’t having any of that. He slapped another $20 in a machine and started slapping the hell out of the button. I watched him put another $40 in the same machine, and I had had enough. I had to almost literally pull him out of the Nugget. Once he got outside in the fresh air and away from all the slot noise he seemed to grasp hold of reality. We stood out on Freemont street and smoked a few cigarettes until he could come to his senses. I called him a few choice words and after a few minutes of trying to convince him that he was not going to get all that money back playing slots he calmed down. We decided to walk down to the LVC and see what was going on there. I bought in for $60 at the same $10 table that I was at earlier and Jody just stood behind me watching. I quickly was up over hundred and I slapped $25 down at the empty spot next to me and told Jody to sit down and play, that it was on me. He declined and said that is gambling was over for the day and he would just watch. He went to the restroom and came back with a bottled water so I guess his drinking was over with too. It’s funny how fast a person can sober up when they realize how much money that they have lost. I played for another 30 minutes and cashed out at $60. Man I love this game.
Jody and I headed down the street and jumped on the bus back to the Riv. We both had to buy another 24 hour pass for $5. Now traffic is getting really bad. What is usually a 10 or 15 minute bus ride took almost an hour. There was something going on at LV Boulevard and Charleston. There were about 5 cop cars around that intersection all with there lights on. They had 2 guys lying face down on the pavement in cuffs and the cops were standing around just talking. Well, I found out why traffic was backed up. There was a little lady with a camera on her shoulder. She apparently was filming with the TV show, Cops.
We finally make it back to the Riv and in our room about 8:30pm. I know its early still, but Jody needed some quite time. While he was chilling out I told him I would be right back. I ran down stairs to the box-office and got 2 tickets to the Riviera Comedy Club. I figured Jody needed a break from gambling tonight and this might put him in a better mood, plus I had a 2 for 1 from the ACG. Total cost for 2 with the coupon was $39. I then ran across the street to McDonalds and grabbed us both something to eat. By this time it is after 9:00 pm and the comedy show starts at 10:30. I make it back up to the room and feed Clark, I mean Jody and surprise him with the tickets to the comedy club. We quickly eat and change clothes and head downstairs to get in line.
By the time we arrived they have already started seating people. Jody sits and I run to the bar and get us both a rum and coke. Total cost plus tip was $10.
While waiting for the show to start we talk it up with the father son sitting at the same table. The father quickly informed us how he had gotten lucky and hit a $1000 jackpot on a $1 wheel of fortune at the Stardust earlier. That didn’t make Jody fee much better.
There were 3 comedians at this show. I have been to the Riviera comedy club every time we have been to Vegas and have never really seen a bad comedian. These guys were great. The first one used his guitar and was a younger guy but seemed to really be comfortable. The second made jokes mainly about his in-laws and flying and being lost in the woods. He was the funniest guy I have heard in a long time. His name was Paul something or another and he is supposed to be on the Tonight Show later this month. I’ll have to try and remember to find out who he was. The guy had Jody laughing so hard he was crying. After the show, Jody thanked me and said that hit the spot.
It was almost midnight and we decided that we didn’t want to gamble no more but wasn’t ready to call it a night, so we sat at the lounge inside the Riviera drank a few more and people watched until almost 2 am. After that we stumbled upstairs and called it a night.

Just a quick side note. I spent almost 10 years in the Army so I can say I have drank quite a bit in my day, but on this day I was about as drunk as I can remember. But it was a good drunk because I didn’t pass out. I usually only pass out if I have been drinking liquor straight from the bottle.

    Day 3:

I awoke at 7am to find that Jody was gone. Oh no, he has gone crazy and left to try and win all that money back. Oh well, I rolled back over and slept peacefully until about 8:30 am. Once up I took a shower got dressed and headed downstairs to get some coffee. I looked around the casino and all the bars. No Jody, but there was a couple big eagle fans sitting at the casino bar yelling, “E…A…G…L…E…S…….EAGLES EAGLES EAGLES†Give me a break! I got my coffee $2 and headed downtown. I would like to find Jody sometime before the game because we had planned on watching it together at some high class sports book down on the strip. Side not: We had originally planned on spending the $125 pp to see it at the Riviera’s super bowl party but I guess the NFL got to them and they decided to cancel it a couple weeks prior. They still had there same party but it was for invited casino guest only. Oh well, they saved me $125.
Once downtown I went to my favorite place, Yep, you guessed it, LVC. This particular morning this place was dead. I bought in at a $10 single deck bj table for $50. I played $10 to $25 per hand for about an hour and a half. I walked away with another hundy. ($100) Have I mentioned how much I love this game? I have never been inside MSS so I decided to give it a try. I didn’t even check out there tables. I just walked around checking there place out. I almost decided to try out there buffet. I have heard that it was real good. I didn’t though I just walked around and played a few nickel and quarter slots. What surprised me was how clean this place was. MSS is kind of over by itself so I didn’t figure it being such a nice place. I said to my self, self you need to check this place out again some day. I wasted about $40 in slots. I then headed over to the Plaza. I particularly never had cared for this place too much, mostly because of the smell. But some one mentioned that they replaced the carpet and the joint has got a better smell to it. As soon as I walked in I thought, nope still smells bad. Just not as bad. It’s got a smell in it. I don’t think they will ever get rid of. Maybe it’s just mental. I played around some slots for about 30 minutes or so down another $20. I then walked down to the Nugget. On my way I got to see a drunk fall down right out in front of Golden Gate. It was funny, until I thought how 24 hours ago that could have been me.
I get down to the Nugget and played some more slots. Down another $100. I like this place because the cocktail service is really good for their slot players, but I am having no luck. I looked around for Jody one more time paying special attention around the ATM machines. No Jody here.
I leave the Nugget and head toward the bus stop. I stopped at a couple souvenir shops and bought some shirts and trinkets for the kids. ($25) Once at the bus stop I watched another drunk fall down. Man its not even noon yet and there are already drunks falling down. Oh well, I guess its 5:00 somewhere. I catch the bus back to the Riviera and decided to play some bj here. I bought in for $100 at $25 double deck table. Played 4 hands and busted every time. Damn that was a quick hundred. Today is not a good day. I check out there sports book and noticed a pretty good line forming. I figured I better go ahead and place my super bowl bet now or the lines will be too long later. The plan was to put $100 down on a 4 team parlay, but since I am not having much luck I think I will bet only $20. I take the Eagles and the points, under on the combined score of 49, over on the interceptions of 2 and over on the field goals of 3. I wish I had of just bet under on everything, but then the interceptions would have gotten me. A 4 teamer pays 11 to 1 so that could have been a good play at $200. No such luck, I guess. Another twenty down the drain.
I head to the room to drop off the souvenirs and found Jody snoring away. Of course I had to enter yelling and screaming E…A…G…L…E…S….EAGLES…EAGLES…EAGLES. And of course he woke up bitching because he just went to sleep at 10:00 am. It was now almost 1 pm. It was pretty funny. He told me how he couldn’t sleep, so he got up about 4 am and headed downstairs and played some bj. He told me he did okay. He won about $200 and agreed how it wasn’t a smart thing to play so much in slots the day before. We both agreed that we had way too much to drink yesterday and we were gonna take it easy as far as drinking today. Yeah right!!
Jody gets ready and we headed back downstairs so that he could place his bet. He bets $100 on a 4 teamer and takes the same thing as me except he bet the under on the interceptions. A bet that he loses as well. We then walk over to slots of fun to get a bite to eat. Jody gets another huge hot dog and I decided that I needed a Subway sandwich. I think my total was around $7. We eat and decided to bus it down to the Mirage and check out there sports book.
Traffic on the strip is ridiculous so it takes a while to get there. We get out at the Mirage and head straight for there sports book. It’s crazy in there. The line to bet his all the way out of the sports book and in front of the bar right outside there book. Jody wants to try some roulette and I decided to play some vp at the bar. I quickly drink two beers and lose about $20 in vp. Jody lost about $10 in roulette. We decided to walk over to Caesars. There sports book is huge and there line is also very long. I am glad that we went ahead and made our bets at the Riv. We check out a few of there tables and its way too high class for me so we go back to the sports book and stand around doing a lot of people watching. Mostly women watching. I have seen a lot of nice looking women so far this weekend, but none like at Caesars. They were all nice looking and there were a lot of them. The sports book is already crammed pack and there is no place to sit. By this time it is almost 3:00 and kick off was in about 30 minutes. I talked Jody into walking over to the Bellagio with me and checking out their book. We did and it was a waste of time. There were even more people in the Bellagio book and I think it was much smaller as well. So we dashed back to Caesars and make it just in time for kick off. We stood at the back of the sports book right in front of some $1 slots the entire game. They had a bar set up and we ended up buying beer the entire game. The beers were $4 a piece and we kept taking turns on beer runs. I can’t remember how many I bought or how many Jody bought, but it was a lot.
Personally, I thought that the super bowl was a pretty good game. The talk around town throughout the weekend was that the Pats were going to run away with the game. I always felt that the game would stay close. I was hoping that Philly would win, but I had my doubts. I just new that the Eagles and 7 was a good bet and I now wish that I would have taken the straight bet instead of the damn parlay. At half time we drank some more beers and played some quarter slots. We both sat next to one another and both of us put $20 in. Fortunately both of us did pretty good and I received a voucher for $45 and Jody got one for $70.
Okay time for second half. We stood back in the same area again and this time there were 5 Patriot fans standing back there with us. It was pretty crowded still and people were walking and standing all around us. One of the guys from New England threw down the plastic top off of his beer. We started taking $1 bets on who would kick the cap first a man or a women. I was up about $5 for awhile until 5 men in a row that was walking through kicked that damn cap. Oh well it was fun and we got a few laughs from people who figured out what we were doing.
By the way, there were tons of security guards here and they got so tired of telling people to get off there cell phones while near the sports book that they just gave up and stopped harassing everyone. By the end of the game Jody and I was feeling no pain. So much for our pact of taking it easy on our alcohol consumption. After the game we walked out to catch the bus back downtown. We were planning on going to a strip club, but both wanted to get back to the LVC to play some more bj. We walked down the strip to what seemed like for ever to find a bus stop. I didn’t realize that on that side of the strip there are fewer bus stops. We walked down until we finally found one. We sat down on the bench. I noticed a younger couple in there mid 20s walking towards us. The girl starts yelling at the boy and she is apparently more drunk than Jody and I. She stops and sits down on the bench down from us. Her boyfriend keeps on walking. She is still cussing him as he walks away. She then says that she is really tired so she lies down on the bench. After about a minute she starts rubbing herself all over and begins to take her shirt off. Some old guy walking by asks us if she is with us. Jody blurts out, “I wishâ€. So now a crowd is starting to gather and there is even a few guys stopping across the street to watch from a distance. Finally her boy friend comes running up grabs her and helps her get her shirt back on and they both walk off quickly. I just thought we weren’t gonna make it to a strip show. Better yet this one was free. About this time a bus comes rolling on by without stopping. I thought that it must have been fool. I look down on the wall of the bus stop and notice a red sign that read this bus stop is temporarily closed for construction. What construction?
The next stop down was at Spring Mountain or something or other. I show the sign to the other 20 people standing around and we all start walking down the strip. We make it to the next stop and there is a bus already there loading and unloading. We jump on and its standing room only. We take it all the way to Freemont St. About an hour later we are sitting at a $5 single deck table with two banana daiquiris from yep, La Bayou. I buy in for another $50. The dealer is a younger guy and he was pretty fun. The others sitting at the table were a riot. They all apparently know each other. They are old college room mates. Two live in LA and two lives in San Diego. We laughed, joked and talked a lot of shit about all the whining ass Eagle fans. All 6 of us sat at that table for about 5 hours. Before I knew it was after 2am and I was up. Way up!! I cashed out at $350. And Jody cashed out at around $250, but he had to buy backing a couple times. Man I love this game. We stumbled back to the bus and back to our room. Somewhere from the front door of the Riv to the elevator I lost Jody. So, guess what? It was an alone time in the elevator. I stood there looking in the mirror, when all of a sudden the doors opened up on the 2nd floor. A nicely dressed women…..okay I can’t do it…..Just kiddin! I make it back to the room and crash. I heard Jody come in about 30 minutes later. Lights out!

    Day 4:

At around 8:30 am Jody wakes up before I do and showers and starts packing his bags. This time he goes downstairs and gets the coffee while I get up dress and pack. Jody returns and decides to check out over the TV. That seemed to work pretty smoothly. At about 9:30 we take our bags down and store them with the bell hop. We get back out to the bus stop and head downtown. While we were packing our bags, Jody found a slot voucher from the Nugget for $170 so we had to dash down there. Gives me one last go around at LVC. Jody goes to the Nugget and said he would meet me at LVC. I buy in at the same $10 double deck table that I played at on Saturday morning. I buy in for $40. There is no one else at the table. It’s just me and the dealer. She looks tired like she has been there all night. She shuffles I cut and then it’s on. She deals me a black jack right off the bat. She gets 17. Next hand ANOTHER F’N BLACKJACK!!!! For her another 17. About that time another dealer comes up and relives her. The pit boss comes over with 2 fresh decks. I thought Oh crap, here goes my luck. He shuffles I cut he deals. ANOTHER F’N BLACKJACK!!!!!! This time he got 20. I’m really loving it now. I place $25 down for my bet and of course I bust out. I play for another 30 minutes and am doing pretty good. Then Jody shows up. He played some more slots at the Nugget and said he won about $200. He buys in for $20, so I point out that it’s a $10 table and he still buys in for just $20. We both lose the next 2 hands. I then say,†Eddie, has any one ever told you that you are bad luck?†The dealer smiled and Jody went off to play some more slots. I keep on rocking on and after about another hour I am up to $175. Our plane was scheduled to depart at 2:55 pm and it is now almost noon. I find Jody and go to the casino cage to cash out. While Jody is cashing in his slot vouchers from a good win, $100 I think, I placed a $5 bill in a Steve McQueen nickel slot right by the casino cage and got down to about 45 credits when I got 4 Steve McQueens and 1 5X on the same pay line. That’s 5000 credits which equals to a cool $250. I cash out that voucher and we hall ass to the bus stop and catch the next bus to the Riv. We get our bags from the bell hop and caught a taxi to the airport. He got us there in pretty good timing. We were checked in and through security by 1:30 pm. Jody paid for the return trip and it was almost $20 with tip.
I usually don’t like to write a whole lot about our experience in the airports but this is where it gets pretty damn interesting. We grabbed a burger fro some cheesy airport café near our terminal. Our plane had not even arrived yet so I kind of figured that our flight might already be delayed. At about 2:45 an airline employee for Air Tran announced that our flight was late from LA because of weather. We waited and waited and we waited. Finally at around 3:45 the plane finally gets to the terminal. We waited for about 20 minutes for some passengers to get off the plane but most of them already from LA were going on to Dallas. Finally we started boarding. After they called our aisle for boarding we got in line. Then some rude bastard about 30 years old comes blowing through bumping into everybody and cutting in line. I thought what an ass and just let him on by. I started to say something but before I could another man in front of me asked him to not be in such a hurry that the plane wasn’t going to leave without him. Any way we get on the plane and get seated. The rude bastard is seating about 6 rows in front of me. While people are still trying to get to his seat this guy gets up and goes to the bathroom in the back of the plane. He is in there for what seamed like 5 minutes or so when he came out and sat back down. The flight attendant from the back of the plane followed him and after he sat she went to the front of the plane and went into the cockpit and began speaking to the pilot. I am watching everything that is going on because something just doesn’t seem right. The flight attendant that was talking to the pilot shuts the cockpit door and walks off the plane. By this time everyone has been seated for a couple minutes but the doors have not yet been closed on the plane. Also I could hear other passengers around us start talking about what was going on. After about 10 more minutes another flight attendant broadcasted that they were checking the plane for some maintenance issues. Yea right, something was going on and I was starting to sweat a little. I even called my wife with my cell phone and told her that I felt something bad was going on. I didn’t want to freak her out, but I knew she would tell me that I was just over reacting. I am a pretty big guy at about 6’ and 270 pounds and I consider myself pretty tough, but I just felt like something was wrong. I wasn’t the only one either. There were a few of us at the back that seen this guy being quick to get on the plane and then go camp out in the bathroom for a bit before sitting in his seat. A few minutes later some dude in a suit and tie boarded the plane with the same female flight attendant that was speaking to the pilot and went straight to that guy about six rows up and asked him to get up and get his stuff that he wanted to talk to him out in the terminal. I couldn’t hear what he was saying but I later spoke to the passenger sitting next to him and he told me what was said. Okay now I know there is something going on. There were 2 other flight attendants, both males, at the front of the plane and they were talking to each other quietly to where no other passengers could here. After the suspicious man is taken off of the plane the pilot comes out and is talking to all three flight attendants that are now standing at the front of the plane. The pilot gets on the planes pa and announces “that everything is going to be okay. The man you just seen being taken off the plane was being arrested by Las Vegas police.†He then said that he wasn’t sure what the man was up to in the lavatory, but the female flight attendant noticed him acting suspicious before and after entering the lavatory. He then said that in a few minutes we were all going to get our belongings and exit the plane for a security check. He asked us to stay calm and promised that it wouldn’t take long for them to conduct a search of the plane. After about 20 minutes of still just sitting there on the plane the flight attendants finally asked us to get off the plane just like we would if we had just landed. I am sure that these flight attendants are trained to say certain things in this type of situation, but what they said doesn’t make any since. If I was to get off the plane just like I would do if I just landed in Vegas I would be getting off feeling excited not worried to death that the plane is fixing to blow up. Oh, and just in case anyone was wandering, the guy that they escorted off the plane and arrested was a white guy. I don’t mean to sound rude, but every time I tell this story, that is the first thing everyone asks.
Anyway, we get off of the plane and the first thing I do is call my wife and explain what is going on to her as I am rushing to one of the cigarette lounges. Jody soon joins me and he is just as worried as I am and the other 100 or so passengers that were on the plane. We hang in there for a bit and then head back over to the terminal. When we get back to the terminal they have metro police with dogs as well as some airport security and 2 air marshals standing around talking. I know they were air marshals because I overheard one introduce him self to one of the uniformed cops. What is crazy about the whole thing is that everyone is busy checking the plane and another cop walks up with the suspicious guy and he isn’t even in cuffs. They tell him to sit down and a cop starts to explain what was going on to the air marshals. I was out of earshot so I couldn’t hear a damn thing that was being said. They just kept asking him questions and looking at his id. After about twenty minutes they finally throw the cuffs on him and haul him out of the area. They even got a round of applause from everyone standing around wandering what the heck was going on. Finally a flight attendant came over and said that if any passengers did not feel comfortable flying tonight that they could get them on the next flight which would not be until 10:52 the next morning. Some people started cheering about getting to stay another night. I wanted to know what the hell just happened and why that man was arrested. After about another hour they started loading us back on the plane. I was hoping that they would tell us once we were seated what was going on. We pretty much could basically spread out if we wanted to because the plane was now only about half full instead of completely full. Even some passengers that just had a lay over from La to Dallas decided to stay the night and fly out tomorrow. Once we were seated the pilot came back over the pa and said something about the guy had a fake id and that was why he was taken off the plane. And then when he was taken off the plane they decided to hold him to question him a bit longer. My question is why and the hell did he have a fake id? The dude looked like he was almost 30 to me and even if he was under 21 you use your fake id in the casino not at the damn airport. And also, what the hell was he doing in the bathroom that made the flight attendant feel that he was suspicious? The pilot assured us that the plane was thoroughly checked several times by airline security metro police and him self along with maintenance and he felt that everything would be 100% okay. He also informed us that the passenger in question’s bags were removed as well.
One of the flight attendants informed all of once in the air that Air Tran would be giving us all $50 vouchers for our next flight with them. Whoopee! I think I’ll be writing a letter to the airline. I really don’t care about the discount for the next time. I just want to know what the heck that guy was up to. It is probably one of those things that we’ll never know. Anyway our flight took off in one piece and landed in one piece……4 ½ hours late.

    THE END

    ******FINAL THOUGHTS******
-I love my wife dearly and appreciated the fact that she let me do the guys trip to Vegas for the first time ever, but I will never go without her again. I realized once I got down there how much I missed having her with me.
-This was the first trip that I ever sat down at a black jack table. I don’t know what my problem was over the past 4 trips, but I have come to love this game. I have yet to play craps, but that will come on the next trip.
-I have stayed at the Riviera way too many times. I still like the place for some reason, but I think I will make LVC my new home away from home. I stayed there last year and the rooms were cheap and very livable.
-I hate the Golden Nugget. At least the casino. I stayed there last year too and the hotel rooms are very nice. I’ll probably stay there again some day but will try not to gamble there.
-Jody is a good friend and I hope that this trip will not detour him from returning some day. Although he has never told me how much he really lost, I am guessing it was a lot. A whole lot!!!
-Playing spot the hooker has become one of my favorite pass times in Vegas. This weekend there were a lot.
-Watching drunk people fall down is just as funny as Mikey described it.
-Angela at La Bayou was awesome. (Making drinks) The next time you go in there have a couple extra shots for me.
-Although I tried to keep an exact count of my wins and losses I could not. I had way too much to drink over this weekend. The darkened #s you see are as close to exact as I could do.
-This was probably the best trip gambling wise that I have ever done. Next time will be better because my wife will be sitting next to me.
-This is the first time I didn’t have to visit an atm machine or cash a check.
-AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST.....NO I DID NOT GET A MASSAGE THIS TIME. AND IF I DID IT WOULD NOT BE BY SOME DAMN DUDE!!!

Damn Billy--that was a great report! I loved reading every bit of it, and it sounds like you had a great time and made some money.

Just a little warning about the blackjack, though...you always win the first time. Now you're hooked! ;)

Let me know when you want a craps lesson, Billy. I'd love to roll the bones and ride the grain train with ya.

    Hey Mikey
It looks like we are gonna try and make it back in late September for my birthday. We are already looking at airfare. I'll take you up on it and I'll by the first round.

Great trip report! Your a brave man for flying that day. . .I would have needed a paid for room in vegas and some more gambling to make me feel better! I'm glad you won at the LVC, because last year I had horrible luck, I'm glad to see there passing my money around!! ha.

    Well Done Billy,

A good read, it felt like I was there with you guys. I know what you mean about going with the Mrs. I took my bride in November and it was one of the better trips. It just seems to keep you more focused or something. Maybe we don't drink as much with the ladies along. I have never been on the "Grain Train". I am just a beer drinker.

The plane thing sure was weird. I know I would feel a little uncomfortable as well.

Any trip to LV where you come out ahead or just slightly down money-wise is a good trip. BlackJack is a fun game isn't it. I don't play it a whole lot , but when I do I enjoy it.

MM2 in a month or so, will be my first craps session. I've been playing online and learning and understanding it better. It's fun to hit for 5000 credits, even if it is just a nickel machine. Just watching the number getting larger and larger. I've never had any luck at the GN either....Oddly enuff, the Plaza has been good to me in the Slot Dept.
I'll change the my signature line now as well, ok DUDE!! [IMG]

Thanks for writing it up, and Thanks for NOT getting a massage!!! [IMG]

    Outstanding!!

Man, my liver hurts just from reading this!

What a great trip...blackjack is so much fun when you're winning, or even just getting to play for a long time on your buy in.

That Griswold stuff was Killing me!!

Really great write-up, thanks for taking the time.

guess i gotta work now, huh?.... damn....

    Great trip report.

When my sister and I went out to Reno two years ago for our 38th birthday I also was wishing I had my husband there. My sister and I had a good time but the hubby and I always travel together. Therefore the hubby is going on our Vegas trip in July - sister and I are celebrating our 40th birthday.

It does seem weird about the guy on the plane. Let us know if you find anything out.

    Billy,

That was a fun report to read.

Damn son, what was that, 4 yards in one day?????? That's impressive and I don't care HOW big you are! I drank one double last year and I was SET for about 2 hours before the buzz wore off.

Hey, two words for you and your wayward buddy:

    Cell Phone.

You guys could definitely used them when you were looking for one another.

    Thanks for the great report.

    Great trip report Billy!

Kinda scary with that dude with the fake ID.

When a buddy and I flew to Vegas a couple of weeks ago, we sat next to a captain who was "jumpseating" (airline pilots who take any airline to get to another destination w/o charge) and did he ever have stories to share. The ride from Denver to Vegas seemed like a 10 minute ride, thanks to his intriguing stories.

He couldn't share 'everything', but he said things that make your hair stand up. Comforting things to hear when you're already flying in the air!!

Glad to hear you had a great time. BJ can be a lot of fun!

Your report does remind me not to ever be in Vegas for a major event. I'd much rather get there Sunday and head out of town Friday or something. I hate being in crowds and having little luck finding lower-limit tables.

Seems like Charleston @ Las Vegas Blvd. is an active place. We witnessed a high-speed chase with 9 cop cars chasing a van going 90 mph. Good thing we had a red light and already stopped, 'cause he didn't give much regard when the light turned red on him.

Thanks Billy for the report. Man you can hold your liquor.. I'd like to try one of those yard drinks.. but I know I'd get shi* faced and end up puking somewhere and ruining my trip. You don't ever seem to have a hang over either.. I'm so impressed.

I had a blast dt. Can't wait to get back. I think for all future trips I will stay dt. Its so damn conveniant. I did drink a lot, but to be honest it wasn't a full 4 yards. That last one I lost some where after I drank about half of it. The following day I was still feeling pretty lit though.

    Hey Mikey,
With you and the LV club having a history and all, do you think I could have gotten any comps at that play? I mostly played $10-$25 a hand and sometimes that lasted for 4 or more hours.

Billy, I can't speak about what the new management would offer you...when I was there last time, it was last years March Madness, and the new folks took over a few days later. In fact everyone from the front desk to the pit told me to make sure I used all my comps up that week because they didn't think the new owners (Barrick) would honor them.

I did the same as you...mostly $10-$25 per hand blackjack (mostly at the $5 table), and $5 craps betting the pass and come line with double odds and pressing..tipping the dealers at every table.

By the second day they had me rated at like $55 per hand (I put the exact amount in my trip report) for 14 hours, so they comped my room, all of my food, and drinks at the bar.

I know I wasn't betting $50+ per hand, but being friendly, tipping the dealers, and schmoozing the pit crew sure helped.

Man, my liver aches just from reading your story. It sounds like you had a good time though.

It does sound like your friend lost a ton of money though. Great Vegas Vacation remark though. That was hilarious!
