Lost my DL while in Vegas in 2014 and was able to fly home. Presented several credit cards, copy of my birth certificate ( which my boss had e-mailed me since I used it as ID when I started), also was patted down and my carry on hand checked. Took a few extra minutes. If you have Costco or Sam's club card take it will with you as they have your pic on them.

Here in Louisiana, our non-compliant licenses are made on the spot at the DMV. Welcome to the 21st century!

I understand the TSA has given MN(not sure about the other states), 2 more years to comply...so the crisis is over!

after getting kicked out the DMV 8 years ago for throwing a license plate at an employee lol, never went back, i now use a notary now and im in and out, new license in under 10 minutes

my thing is what do they do to make it better to fly inside the US border....i have to show ID for alcoho, cigarettesl, casino entry, to police ect. if its fine for all of those things, why not to board a plane..sounds like just a way to have everyone spend money on a new ID

I expected that in the first place.
It's kinda TSA against states. Issuing driving license is the right of each state, TSA has no right to tell the states what to do.
No chance for TSA to win in a court, not even the Federal government,
TSA can request the states to co-operate, that's all. They can't push the states into a corner.

It's not up to TSA. This was an act of Congress. They dictated the requirements of RealID and dictated that TSA only accept RealID by a deadline that has long past. Part of the problem is that to implement it fully is expensive and there is no money from the feds to help pay for it. In actuality very few states are fully compliant. But you are right - there is a good state's rights argument here but no one has the balls to push it. I can't even remember what this was about anymore.

    Real ID alert

I work in local government and this is what we received the other day:

Today, the Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh C. Johnson announced plans for the final phase of REAL ID enforcement which addresses enforcement by TSA at airports:

Starting January 22, 2018, passengers with a driver's license issued by a state that is still not compliant with the REAL ID Act (and has not been granted an extension) will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel to board their flight. Passengers with driver's licenses issued by a state that is compliant with REAL ID (or a state that has been issued an extension) will still be able to use their driver's licenses or identification cards.

Starting October 1, 2020, every air traveler will need a REAL ID-compliant license, or another acceptable form of identification, for domestic air travel.

View the DHS press release and Q&A documents for additional information.

here is the link to the press release: http://www.dhs.gov/news/2016/01/08/statement-secretary-jeh-c-johnson-final-phase-real-id-act-implementation

Who knows what will happen to the states that aren't real id compliant. We'll find out in 2020. For the states not in compliance, maybe you should pick up a passport just in case. I seriously doubt they would deny travel for those states in 2020 but who knows.

I already went and got my "Real ID" in June. Fortunately, Nevada is a compliant state. I got it early because my understanding is the only way to get one is to go into a DMV with the appropriate paperwork (original or certified birth-cert, SS card and a couple other things) and handle it live, in-person. No way to do this on the internet or a kiosk at the 7-11. I can only imagine the lines when the masses start to take care of this.
