Or more specifically, what time periods should I be avoiding the trip from the strip to downtown (and vice versa on the way back)? I'm going during the week, and want to avoid a hefty cab fare - or more accurately, want to minimize my time on the Deuce. So when does traffic pick up? I'm looking to spend an entire evening downtown, so heading there at 11am won't work.

    Thanks!

I'd think about 4pm or so. That's before the big rush hour.

And, instead of taking the Duce, I'd take the SDX. It stops at the same place downtown, but there's a lot fewer stops on the way. The Duce stops at just about every casino on the way down the strip. And, they both cost the same.

Don't know where you are staying on the Strip, but if it is anywhere on the south end (i.e. NYNY/MGM corner) I would strongly recommend you take the WAX which picks up at the south side of NYNY on Tropicana, gets you DT in 20min, and is rarely crowded. Only runs about once an hour so check the schedule on Las Vegas RTC website. It is a residential route, so the cost is cheaper at $2 per each way. On the way back to the Strip, pick it up on a Fremont between Binion's and the Fremont and get off at the stop just east of the Tropicana Hotel.

If staying near Harrah's check the Sam's Town website for the schedule of their shuttle. Full size buses take you to ST in about 20 min and then DT in about 15 (to Fremont Hotel). There is about a 15 minute turn-around from arriving at ST to departing but it is free (less the tip). BUT the WAX is THE answer is staying near MGM / Trop / NYNY.....good luck!

We're staying at the Bellagio, but won't necessarily be at our own hotel when we head downtown, so these are all very helpful (and all three appear to be better options than the Deuce). Thanks a ton!

If you're planning on driving just avoid the LV boulevard and take the 15 or Maryland Parkway. I've never seen the latter very busy at any time of day and the 15 is quicker than LV boulevard if things are snarled up as well....usually.
