    My Trip Report

This is the story about how one local casino tried to permanently burn a synapse between my dopamine receptors, not understanding that those brain cells had long since been “Goosed” out of existence and replaced with an icy-cold Grinch-like heart of coal lying in wait to gnash my teeth through their generous freeplay offers like the saber-clawed rabbit embellished by Vince Vaughn in Swingers.

After about 4 months almost completely off from gambling, I decided in mid-November to put in a little work at the good ole local Rivers casino in Des Plaines, IL. This is a new facility located near O’Hare and the Rosemont convention centers and hotels. It is about 5 miles from my house. I would say the casino reminds me most of Aria, with a newer dark wood design and top-of-the-line machines and table gaming environment.

The Rivers company seems to run things a little differently than other locals casinos like Grand Victoria in Elgin. The employees seem a tad more on egg shells, or tense for some reason and in general the dealers are pretty lame. The handpay service is extremely slow and they do a weird thing compared to Vegas where they clear the machine so you can play your existing credits while you await the handpay.

Anyway, it was mid-November I suppose where I headed over with a few hundo and started in on dollars with a quick quad, followed by another on $2, and then finally I decided to play roulette , but the table didn’t open for 5 minutes so I decided to leave with my $800ish profit. But a funny thing happened on the way to the door and I tripped over the “high limit” room, where I ended up playing a bunch of break-even $5/$10 VP and finally cashed in on Quad Deuces for $2,000 and bailed with about a $2,500 net profit.

Fast-forward about 2 weeks and I start getting almost daily mailers from the casino. In the past I had gotten some $5, $10 and maybe the occasional $20 freeplay, but now I was receiving $80 freeplay and with all the various mailers for different days, it ended up applying to almost every day from Nov 30-Jan 1!!!

Funny they don’t just send one mailer, but hey I’m not gonna look a gift horse in the mouth even if she does have a sllghtly lazy eye! (there were two other mailers I seem to have trashed which basically covered almost every single other day in December).....

Initially I made a few ill-fated trip to the Rivers burning off my freeplay, eventually realizing that I could really pad the bankroll for my December trip by simply playing only the freeplay hands on JOB and then cashing out. Although $50-$75 wouldn’t do much, over 20 sessions, it could easily amount to $1,500, or so went my logic at the time.

So I made a spreadsheet of the dates I could play, missing some for being out of town, etc. It turned out I had about $1,760 in total usable freeplay, so I set a goal of $1,500. Some of the sessions were more than $80 because some had a random “drawing” where I would get $90 or $100 instead and some were double if you went during slower hours, which of course I did.

I developed a route which allowed me to do the whole “Rivers Run” in approx. 35 minutes door-to-door, often going right when the open so I could park right in front and get out quickly. There are a lot of DEGENS waiting for that place to open! Mostly craps players and Cougar-age slot players oddly enough.

Anyway, I stuck to my “free-play only” system on all but 3 occasions. On those 3 occasions my will power was weak and I decided to play Bonus Deluxe and go for quads instead of the JOB easy money 2-pairs. Shockingly, and quite luckily, on each of these occasions I hit either quads in short order, or got a bunch of full houses to build me up long enough to get quads. The first one of these was the day before our Vegas trip (12/12/12) and I actually hit the quad on the 15th hand I believe and cashed out playing nothing but the freeplay. The other times I got more hands in before the quads as I was playing off the freeplay but got lucky to get more play due to straights/flushes/full houses.

The big hit was on 12/26 when I hit four quads in short order and then hit a $1,050 roulette spin on my way to the door. Of course I was quite happy as this was all gravy bracketing a $4,000 winning trip to Vegas.

Here is the overall chart of how the freeplay went by visit (with cumulative total):
    • 11/30 $85 $85
    • 12/02 $150 $235
    • 12/03 $100 $335
    • 12/05 $75 $410
    • 12/06 $60 $470
    • 12/07 $105 $575
    • 12/10 $25 $600
    • 12/12 $450 $1,050
    • 12/17 $60 $1,110
    • 12/19 $45 $1,155
    • 12/20 $50 $1,205
    • 12/21 $80 $1,285
    • 12/22 $165 $1,440
    • 12/23 $430 $1,870
    • 12/24 $95 $1,965
    • 12/25 $150 $2,115
    • 12/26 $2,190 $4,305
    • 12/28 $45 $4,350
    • 12/30 $100 $4,450
    • 12/31 $50 $4,500

In the end, adding together the Vegas trip and the River’s freeplay, December was a +$8,500 gambling month, which was especially outstanding given the low amount of play, mostly hit and run roulette and VP.

There was no “smart system” or reproducible strategy. I didn’t even end up playing games with great odds, I just got lucky as fuck and hit a shitload of quads in the month along with 4-5 roulette #17s and a one-off $150 hard 4 at craps. It was truly a drunken stumbling, bumbling horseshoe up the ass experience. Making sure I milked the Rivers for every last benefit, I stopped by the previously unknown to me Gift Shop and cashed in my meager points for a few small items after wrapping up my gambling for the year (I just love winning and then getting these few extra souveniers to remember the victory):

And to top it off the guy at 7-11 even gave me this silver quarter in my change today (value $5)….

As for the Rivers intention of addicting me to visiting their casino, I have found it much more difficult to avoid going there during the non-freeplay times. It has entered my mind as an option more often than before. Of course I know that is a slippery slope and my luck will not continue. Luckily I will be shipping out of town shortly back to the Times Square Red Lobster for Lobster Fest and no such option will exist. My plan is to use this self-imposed rehab Lindsay Lohan style and return at least slightly cured of the evil Rivers itch. I’m setting a new years resolution to not attend their casino in 2013, which will cost me the tail end of my $80 freeplay, which has none too shockingly morphed back into $5 after my low play visits.

Well since I’ll be out of service for most of the next year, I would like to bequeath my lucky run to the rest of my VMB friends, carry the torch my friends!!!

Congrats on an amazing run. I can only dream of those numbers!

I think the thing to do would be to totally shun Rivers for a long time, for sure you'd just be giving it back...

    ...or would you? :wink2::wink2::wink2:

yeah they won't see me during 2013, and how is it so easy for me to "turn it off"? well because 2013 is BAD LUCK of course!!!

Oh and I should add I couldn't have done it without you, cause I never would have heard of "Boner Deluxe" and I would surely have been down to zero on those measily $250 quads before the hot streaks set in.....of course the past 2 weeks I probably shoulda been playing triple bonus (and I have to admit I switched off JOB for one hand of it today :wink2:), but quickly reverted to JOB to try to reach $4,500 for the whole deal. It took an inside straight draw of a Jack on the final hand to make it.

Well thanks to that cock tease Gaggles I was an Epic Fail on my attempt to avoid the Rivers Casino for all of 2013. Luckily I was able to stay away for almost a month and will be out of town with no access for 10 weeks in a matter of days.....

anyway here are a couple samples of the results from my visit this evening:

sweet hit! How can you stop when on a hot streak? I've gone six trips without losing before, so I believe that when you are running good just keep going as much as you can.

One thing I'd add with the local type casinos that I've noticed. If you play there a lot, you get your offers. But as I stay away, oddly my offers go up. It's like they know they've got to give you more to get you back.

This is 100% true at Rivers.

    The formula is interesting though.

I spend half the year in New York each year (half in Chicago), in one 10-week stretch and another 16-week stretch. After the longer stretch I had huge offers. Maybe if you don't show for 3 months they start to jack it up.

    Another profitable visit today.

A little frustrating, although I can't complain, hit the quad 3's on first hand switching down to $2 from $5. Of course I wouldn't have hit them on $5 the way the RNG works so i'll take it. Also was bouncing between $1/$2/$5 and on one of the $5 hands held two high hearts and got 2 of the other 3 along with a low heart.

    Yes.

I was "One Jack Off" from my holy grail of the $20,000 Royal.

Beeejay, that's awesome! The last time I was there was for their 500 dollar loss rebate for new players back in the summer. Ended up making 50 dollars or so off that promotion (lost 500 trying for a column bet on video roulette, then played off the 500 on VP and won 50 bucks).

My offers are generally 20 bucks or so on various days of the week. I live in the city, so it's more difficult to get out there, but I admit I am more interested in going there now. I've been driving out to the Horseshoe because they have better VP tables, but I really like the atmosphere of Rivers. It reminds me of Aria as well.

Rock on and congrats on all of your wins there!
