    My Trip Report

Whether I'm able to actually DO a live trip report will depend entirely on how much we have to pay for WiFi at Harrah's. :D

We leave early tomorrow - the plan is to leave the house around 5:30AM to make a 9am flight in Milwaukee. The airport is saying an estimate of 10:30 landing Vegas time, which is a half hour less than was previously reported - I'll take it!

We're staying at Harrah's - it's our first visit there, but we got a great deal and love the location. Hoping for an early check-in as well, but we'll see what we can get.

Why a Victory Vacation? Well, we planned and purchased the trip in January. No problem. Two weeks ago today, however, I was diagnosed with breast cancer (DCIS, non-invasive, Stage 0). One week ago tomorrow, I had a lumpectomy and lymph node biopsy, where they found that the cancer had, indeed, started spreading and had changed to invasive breast cancer, Stage 1. The path report on Thursday found that they had got all of it in the lumpectomy, and we were CLEARED for vacation!

So -- Victory, because a little thing like cancer isn't going to keep us from enjoying our vacation to the fullest. In fact, this will be a great end to a month of (not good) surprises and surgery. Can't think of a better place to spend it!

Anyway - with any luck, I'll be able to update Day #1 tomorrow night. If, for some reason, I don't return until Friday evening, it will be because they wanted to charge us waaaaay too much for WiFi.

Need to head to bed, because...4:30 will come very quickly. Woo! Vegas, here we come!

    Thanks, everyone!

What a wonderful surprise to see so many stop by the thread! Thanks, everyone -- it's been a weird month, to say the least. I'm not the type to "woe is me" a lot, and I truly believe that being able to face this without lamenting fate and having an amazing support system in my husband, family and friends is what made this all work out.

Anyway - WiFi here we come (although the front desk said, "Uh...you really shouldn't be getting WiFi on your floor!) --

    Day 1: Tuesday 3/30

Woke up at 4am too excited to sleep. Good thing, because we still ended up leaving late for the airport, and squeaked in to MKE with only about 45 minutes to spare. We turned down the business class upgrade (only $70 each!) and regretted it. Four hours packed in like a sardine with my left arm still bandaged (lymph node removal) was not fun. We may take the upgrade for the flight home.

Got into town about 11am. Baggage, car rental, HUNGRY! Thanks to the board, we got about $120 worth of meal gift certificates from Restaurant.com for about $12 -- one was for a little hole-in-the-wall bar called “Jackson’sâ€, so we headed there for lunch. I had a tri-tip Jack Daniel’s steak sandwich (delicious - a little sweet when you‘re not expecting it, but the steak was very tender), dh had a cheeseburger & onion rings.

Hit the grocery for a few supplies and went to check in at Harrah’s. Line was long, it took about 45 minutes, but we got a strip-view room on the 25th floor after mentioning the Victory Vacation ($20 after she found the room), and by the time we got up there…we were exhausted. By then, it was about 3pm local time (5pm home time, which means we’d been up for 13 hours with no rest - not exactly normal for us in our health conditions). Tried to nap, couldn’t. Agreed to spend the evening exploring Harrah’s (we haven’t been here before), dropped about $100 in the casino, dh found the “Wizard of Oz†game and was up about $40 at one time (penny slots), dropped it all, but hey…he got to play the Emerald City bonus, so it was all good.

Walking out of Harrah’s into Carnaval Court, we saw this guy who does clay sculptures of your face. It must have been the end of his day, because he offered to do one of both of us for $30 (his regular price for one is $40). It is so neat looking! He really got dh good - me, not as much, but it still looks very cool. So many people stopped to watch him do it - I’m sure he got good business out of it after we left, because there was a line.

Ate dinner at about 8pm at Harrah’s Café. I’m trying to order things that I wouldn’t normally order at home, so I was a real rebel and ordered the Italian Grilled Cheese. Unfortunately, I didn’t read the description well enough - it wasn’t mozzarella and provolone with prosciuttio, it was FRESH mozz with the rest…ew. Really. Ew. I peeled off the fresh mozz and it was tolerable. Their cream of mushroom soup was homemade and delicious, though - I should have gotten that with a half sandwich. Dh got the turkey open faced sandwich and got enough food to feed a small army. Unfortunately, he had to leave half of it on the plate.

Walked out to the Strip, took some pics, gambled, got some supplies, crashed. By the time I crawled, whimpering, into bed, I’d been up 22 hours. And now…after a whopping 4 hours of sleep, I can’t fall back asleep. Go figure.

On the agenda for today: Harrah’s breakfast buffet, a supermarket run (dh is sick of soda already), the Price is Right show at Bally’s, and ...something else tonight. Yeah, we’re pretty dull. But hey…it’s a relaxing trip this time!

Things we want to see this trip:
    *Fremont Street
*Paris Eiffel Tower (hey, we have a 2-for-1 coupon!)
    *Venetian (missed it last time)
*Drive out to Red Rock Canyon
*Bellagio conservatory (I love it there...)
    *Silverton Aquarium
*GameWorks (dh saw what it was and his eyes got all big...plus, I got a gift certificate from restaurant.com for there...

Don't know if we'll be able to fit it all in, but that's my wish list.
