Anywhere quite like The Western left in Downtown area or reasonabaly close
I used to like it in there dollar beers, craps and BJ. Some really colorfull clientele as well, that were great to sit and talk with at the bar.
Where do all the old patrons from there go nowadays?
    Thanks.

As far as I'm concerned, there is no other like the Western Hotel. I've spent many a days in that place, people watching and drinking 40oz beers at the 2 dollar blackjack tables up front. It's going to be missed. The only thing better than The Western was the sidewalk in front of that place, and Atomic Liquor next door. The only time I've ever seen a game of pool played on a table without felt.

The OLD Gold Spike would have been the closest downtown, but since the renovations, it's more of a polished turd. El Cortez may come close, but still doesn't touch the magic that happened at the Western.

As much as it hurts, we must move on. I'm a huge fan of Dives, and my favorites would include the Longhorn on Boulder, Jokers Wild further into Henderson, Railroad Pass near Boulder City, and of course, Ellis Island. While staying downtown, I usually camp out at El Cortez and Gold Spike, since it still has a small glimmer of that degenerate/homeless/just pissed myself feel.

I must plead guilty to having always had a certain fondness for that as well...

No. Klondike sunset gets the feel right, but no people or table games.

I say closest is the following:
    Limits: railroad pass
    Vibe: Klondike
    People: el Cortez
Overall: ridiculous, but I say Texas station.

Stay away from jokers wild... It's mine :)
But honestly that is such a great place to me I can't bump it up against western. If y'all recall I made a whole trip out of the closing!!

do you really consider railroad pass a dive?

we stopped in there for awhile in july on our way back from the dam and found it to be pretty neat.

far from fancy but a drink almost instantly and super friendly staff.

Western was a fun place to be years ago. We stayed at Gold Spike, then went up to ElCo, but always went to Western for fun and good times. Never stayed there, and never went at night.

I loved the Western - great low limit blackjack with break-in dealers, very interesting customers. I used to make the walk from El Cortez to the Western a couple times on every trip to Vegas, usually around midnight. Gotta admit, I miss the adrenaline rush that came with that walk. If you've done it you know what I mean....

...and everyone thought I was crazy for making that walk :)

Back to the original post, one place I did forget about, which isn't necessarily a casino(but does have bar-top VP is The Bunkhouse. Back in the day it used to be a real dive, but they are booking live bands almost nightly now, and it's still a great place to hang out. If I remember correctly, they have $1 PBR and cheap, decent food. If you're looking for a cool, intimate place to take a break, see some local and national bands, it's a great place to visit. http://www.bunkhouselv.com/

Thanks for the replies, im gonna check out The Bunkhouse next trip and see if i can seek out some old faces from The Western. I think it was as much a novelty for them having an English man to booze with as it was for me.
The walk never really bothered me in daylight and i was always to drunk to care on the walk back, crazy? I dunno?
    Cheers.

Wouldn't the Aztec Inn be along the same scale as the old Western?

Yes, just south of the Strat. I've wondered about it too, but I've never been curious enough to visit. :)

The Aztec is indeed a sleezy joint and worth a stop for fellow lovers of dive spots. i'm gonna check-out The Bunkhouse this trip... never heard of it before, but it's sure in the right neighborhood to fit the bill.

Also, a couple weeks ago I drove down Fremont and if Atomic Liquors isn't back open, they're damn close as the beer-signs, etc. were all lit in the windows! It was like noon and I was on my way to a meeting, so couldn't verify for sure.

Wild WIld West is worth a stop for dive lovers, definitely. They have a small sports book, good amount of people there for any given time since it is a trucker/cheap motel with a dennys, and roulette/3CP/BJ. Roulette is 25c chips $2 min when I was there.

I've been in The Aztec a few times.
    .
Once, I ordered the steak + eggs special --
The steak was absolutely RAW on the inside !
I said to the waiter :
    "My steak is raw."
He said, "Oh ! you wanted it cooked ?"
    :evillaugh
I did crack up at his line.

The Silver Nugget, Lucky Club and Opera House, all in North Las Vegas, might be comparable to the dive appeal of the Western.

    Ah the Western! Story.

I sat at the bar and got gum on my nice Levys. Then this girl gave me a hard luck story about how she needed bus fare to get back home, so I gave her a few bucks. Later I saw her at the El Cortez playing slots:poke:

On the way back a bum almost accosted me for a cigarette and some spare change.

They closed the hotel a long time ago.

Why anyone would miss that place behooves me.

    RIP Western
When they cleaned up the Western it wasn't as much fun but fun could still be had there.

Aztec can't compare to Western. Aztec is too nice.
