Anybody ever stayed in a regular hotel in LV?

We've had our trip booked this month at Sam's Town for 5 weeks already and my mother-in-law wants to try to get there a day earlier.

Originally I had planned on breaking up the 12-hour drive with an overnight stay in Phoenix, but she told me she wants to try to drive straight through.

I have a ton of points with Choicehotels, LaQuinta and Marriott from numerous work trips throughout the year and I figured I could get us rooms for free instead of adding a more pricey weekend night onto the tab.

Anyone stay at a plain ole' hotel in Vegas during any one of their visits? Any suggestions? Is it a bad call? I wish I had comps from the casino instead of hotel chains, but I don't.

    Thanks for any intel.

About 2 years ago I spent a night in the Days inn -- not sure if there are more than one...this one was on Tropicana. It was a nice Days Inn, just like any of the better Days Inn properties. They also had a shuttle to the MGM every hour.

Yes, I sometimes use my hotel points for stays in Las Vegas. In the last year, I have stayed at

La Quinta - Paradise Road- little old, little dingy, parking lot fills up but closest to strip
La Quinta - Airport South - newer place, standard LQ, but request room that faces away from airport, makes all the difference in the world. Easy access to strip but far south side
Holiday Inn Express - Henderson - nicest of the 3 property wise, walkable to Sunset Station, a nice locals casino.

Yes... My assistant talked me into the Hilton Garden Inn for a couple visits. She attended a couple meetings there and liked it. It's a nice, clean place on Las Vegas Blvd, south of Warm Springs Rd. but totally for people on business who want to pretend Las Vegas is just another city... but it's not is it.

With the Cosmo's connection to Marriott could you use those points there maybe?

Best Western Mardi Gras is fine for a couple of nights, and cheap.

I stayed at the Motel 6 on Tropicana a couple of years when attending a trade show at the MGM Grand Arena. I had the room with one queen size bed. The location was good, place was clean and cheery, shower, no tub, convenience store on premises. this was back in the 90's. There were no microwaves or fridges then, more recent motel 6 stays in New England have included then as well as full bath.

The Tropicana Ave Motel 6 is a bit noisy near the airport, but that wasn't an issue for me. It was clean, bright and comfortable including the bed.

    Westin Casuarina

I stayed there back in 2005 and it was plenty nice. They have some slots and video poker, as well as table games sometimes. They even did a half tub craps game a couple times while we were there, which was awesome. It's not too far from the strip that you couldn't just walk west on Flamingo or just cross over into Bally's.

I suppose that doesn't really help you all that much, but it's the only "regular hotel" I've stayed at, so I thought I'd provide the info for everyone.

There is a Spring Hill Suites across the street from the former Las Vegas Hilton and next to the rear entrance of the Riviera. I never stayed there, but its one of my favorite Marriott brands, the rooms are fairly large and there is a sitting area and a bedroom. You could use up some rewards points for the stay.

I stayed at the Travelodge on Koval the first time I went to Vegas in 20 years.I wanted to stay cheap and then found out I could stay on the strip at a nice hotel just as cheap.

Try Courtyard by Marriott in Henderson

We used Marriott points and stayed at a Courtyard by Marriott in Henderson once when we were getting in late and needed a Saturday night cheap before our comp rooms were available. It was fine - clean, quiet, comfortable and most of all, essentially FREE with points for a Saturday night. Pretty standard Marriott. This was 2 years ago. Check them out on Hotels.com or trip advisor for reviews. It is located on Green Valley Parkway.

    Good luck!

    Cheers,
    Kelly

If you've got or want Marriott points, maybe try the JW Marriott in Summerlin? Price-wise it's pretty comparable to other options. It's a category 6 hotel, so paying outright would probably make more sense than using points. It would definately be cheaper than a night @ Cosmo.

It's close to Suncoast and Red Rock for gambling/restaurants. I wasn't wowed by the restaurants @ the JW when I stayed there last year, but they weren't bad, just not exciting.

I was on a business trip a few years back and I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn on S. Las Vegas blvd. It's a nice property and I would recommend it. The outlet mall is walking distance and they have a free shuttle to Mandalay Bay and the Fashion Show mall. If I had a car I would have explored South Point, but even without a car SP is doable via cab.

2 years ago I stayed at the Embassy Suites on Paradise it was in conjunction with a conference. It was very nice and the perks were great! Breakfast and a happy hour. I did most of my gambling at the "Hilton", LVH.

I too was going to suggest the JW Marriott in Summerlin, there is also a Renaissance pretty near the strip. The only regular hotel I have stated in was a Courtyard south of Mandalay Bay and on the other side of the freeway. It was a nice one, but still a Courtyard. There is also a Fairfield and Residence Inn in the same area.

I had to go to a bachelor party last year the weekend after 4th of July. My buddy with a comped room cancelled and all the rates I could find last minute were sky high. I ended up booking Travelodge Ambassador Inn (now renamed Travelodge Las Vegas Airport) on Orbitz for $30 a night. To be honest it wasn't that bad. Parked the car right in front of my room, free breakfast, small pool, used Domino's as my room service, and watched the fireworks in the parking lot with the other friendly characters staying there. I think I had free wifi too.

i stay at Royal Resort ... right on Convention Center drive across the ROSS near the Riviera...

i love it and its my go to hotel when my connection can come through.

Pool has cabanas and they are first come first serve.

liquor can be taken into the pool area minus glass.

Hotel lobby has a few bar games including pool.

Rooms are AWESOME ... depending on the night $60 can get you an ultra soft and comfortable bed, Fridge, Microwave, coffe maker, late checkout upon request.

It's still there and the rooms have been updated. I stayed there a few of years ago. Great location. A five minute walk and you're in the MGM lobby.

When I visit with my dad, we have stayed out in Henderson at a fairly new Comfort Inn and Suites. Actually a very nice place and is within walking distance of Sunset Station and the small Wildfire casino near SS.
