    My Trip Report

Several months ago, there was a John Pinette comedy show planned at Caesar’s Windsor, but it was canceled. It was rescheduled for Jan 22nd, but that show too was canceled due to illness. But we decided to go anyway. The free shows are only part of the reason we go to Windsor. The real draw for me is a chance to play video poker.

We arrived late, around 5PM. After getting checked in to the Forum tower for three comped nights, we met with some VMB friends and stopped in the Diamond Club for dinner. Over the next three days, we had a free buffet dinner and the remaining meals in the café using points.

But on to the real purpose of the trip.

    Gambling
90% of my play was on quarter VP, with the rest of it on Let it Ride. As on my last trip, I played (7/5) WHA instead of the slightly higher EV 9/5 DDB. I have been frustrated on previous trips by my apparent inability to get a kicker. And if you’re not getting the kickers at DDB, your return is much lower than the theoretical EV. But this trip was different. I got the kickers playing a game where kickers don’t matter. I also got two SFs, which pay 400 credits in WHA vs. 250 credits in DDB. Would I have gotten the same hands if I had played DDB (or even TDB)? There is no way to know. But I was happy enough with my results.

    Tuesday 1/21
It was 8:15 pm before I got a chance to play some VP. I was dealt 222QQ, but didn’t connect with the other 2 when I dropped the Q’s. This is the correct play in a 7/5 or even 8/5 WHA game, but not the 9/5 TB+ game I play in Vegas. (I got another such deal on Friday, but didn’t connect then either.) I got only two regular quads before I turned in for the night. It had been a long day. I was down a few hundred at the end of the day. There would be plenty of time for play on the next two days.

    Wednesday 1/22
After a nice stack of pancakes in the café, I returned to the VP machines, while DH went to the poker room. It was a good day with a fair number of quads and a disproportionate number of bonus type quads (A thru 4). I was dealt a full house AAAxx, but I didn’t connect with the fourth Ace after dropping the other pair. (I had a second such deal on Friday, but didn’t connect then either.)

I had to break my play into short sessions because of shoulder pain. During the breaks from VP, I played Let it Ride. I didn’t get anything of note on LIR, although someone hit a 5-card straight flush for $11K shortly before I sat down. In Sept I sat next to a woman who hit the 5-card SF for over $14K. That big progressive win is all around me. I hope next time it hits me.

Someone recently asked if players ever realized any significant wins from free-play. I never really gave it much thought before, but on this day I had $25 in free play and shortly after downloading it, I got quad 2’s for $150. A short time later I got quad Aces for $300. It was an excellent return on the free play. But at the end of the day, I was only back to even for the trip. Quad count for the day: 13

    Thursday 1/23
Again, I had a good day with VP. I got Aces twice (once with a kicker that made no difference in WHA). One play I usually make is to save a small pair rather than four to a flush. I know it’s wrong, but it seems to work out for me. On this day I saved 55 rather than a flush draw and drew the other two 5’s. This day I was playing entirely with my left hand – my right shoulder was on fire. Unfortunately, that over-use caused problems with my left shoulder. Dang! What is a gambler to do? I took a break to go to the hot tub for a while. It helped a little. When I returned to the casino, I ran into some friends from another Vegas message board. Shortly thereafter, my DH joined us and we had dinner and a nice chat in the café. We returned to the machines where I hit a few quads before moving on to the LIR table. There I was dealt a three-card SF which paid $200. It was my only big LIR hit for the trip. I finally gave up around 10PM. VP Quad count for the day: 11

    Friday 1/24
This was check-out day. Fortunately my DH did the pack mule thing to cart all of our belonging to the car. Then I had another stack of pancakes before heading to the VP machines. Once again, it started out as a good day. I hit quad Aces again, holding only one. And again I got the kicker that never seems to be there when I’m playing DDB. I was about ready to quit and go play LIR for a while. I pulled my card, but then put it back in to see what my Tier credits were. When I put it back in, I got a message saying I had some free play - $25. So I played the FP and got a SF, my first of the trip. Then I got another SF. Each paid $100. So, once again, FP was lucrative.

I went back to the LIR table for the last couple of hours. DH joined me there and we each managed to squeak out a $50 win without hitting any big hands. The lady next to me said she had had a dealt royal at quarter VP earlier in the day. It was the only royal I heard about on this trip.

We left around 2:30 and got home not long after dark. DH did all the driving, while I nursed my sore wing.

    VP SUMMARY
    Royal Flush: 0
    Straight Flush: 2
    Aces w/k: 2
    Aces w/o/k: 2
    2,3,4 w/k: 1
    2,3,4 w/o/k : 4
    5-K: 20
Dealt Quads: 0 – first time in a long time that I had a trip with no dealt quads
Quads from holding 1 card: 2
Quads from holding 2 cards: 22
Quads from holding 3 cards: 5
    Four to a Royal: 17

Although Tuesday started out slowly, this trip had a more steady flow of quads than I can remember in a very long time. When quads occur more frequently than 4-to-a-royal, it is a good session. This was a very good trip. I managed a profit of nearly $600 without hitting a royal. That doesn’t happen nearly often enough. And besides that, DH and I both scored a stainless steel mixing bowl with lid, Caesar’s apron and some BBQ sauce in a TR giveaway on Thursday. Caesar’s is rather generous with such giveaways, but we’re not there to pick up all that are offered. Some players have a garage or basement full of such giveaways and don’t bother with them any more. But I’m still happy to get some free stuff now and again.

We’ll be in Vegas in a month. I’m hoping for a quick wing repair before then.

Hi Timspeed. Yes I like WHA or the TB+ variation I play at Red Rock. How long will you be in Vegas? I like MSS. Not yet sure what our daily plans are. But if we get down to MSS I'll look you up.
