We went to Vegas for NYE two years ago, and though I had fun, I thought I had written it off my bucket list. Now, we find ourselves trying to book it again instead of Thanksgiving.

Any tips on how to handle all the craziness? We did pretty well last time, but will take all suggestions to mind.

Hopefully we will get invited to a party. Did not two years ago, but did last year...figures!

    Thanks for any suggestions.

We went to Las Vegas for NYE 2009/2010 and it was extremely busy, enough so that at the end of the trip I was saying that I was glad I did it, but I doubt I will ever do it again.

Mind you we did still have a good time, we were in Las Vegas and all that... but it was long lines everywhere and it was nearly impossible to find a game you actually wanted to play.

    But, that said...

The way my work is right now I'm doing 80+ hours a week and it doesn't look like thats going to lighten up until December and my wife is moving to a new store with her work... we've been doing at least two trips a year for the last 6 years but with only one down so far this year (early April) its really looking like if we want to do a second trip this year it will likely have to be Christmas or New Years, and I'm not that wowee about doing Christmas in Vegas.

For us, if we go to Vegas for NYE this year we'll probably stay at the south end of The Strip, at Monte Carlo or Aria, to avoid the massive crowds that gather at the center strip, and I did have some party invites last time and we'd be more likely to consider one of those as well.

I used this website to anticipate where I would like to go and how much it would cost.

    http://www.lvol.com/events/newyear.html

I am thinking about Chandelier bar for the ringing in, $300 Stratosphere Top of the World 5 course meal and view of strip fireworks at midnight, The Orleans casino to bring it in peacefully and joyfully for free on the casino floor or Luxor at their many bars on their casino floor. Or perhaps eyecandy at MB. Decisions, decisions.

Chandelier is my top choice for photo-sake, proximity to the craziness outside mid-strip, beautiful surroundings. But I am big on free and so far it's "tentatively" free. I called and they said it was free last year....but I am not sure how exclusive it was. Any ideas anyone?

On what day does it start getting crazy packed (slots/tables and the strip in general)? The 30th or the 31st? And when does it die down?

I got mine by email. To me when I say "party invites" by those I mean it was an offer to come and stay in a comp room over NYE and free admission to their main party. Last year I had those from Luxor, Excalibur, Mirage and Monte Carlo.

At the same time I do get NYE party advertisements. To me those are where either they are selling a package (IE: $350 per person, must book minimum 2 ppl, to get a room for two nights and admission to the party) or just straight up an ad like "celebrate the new year at ______ with our special guest host _____! Admission price $____ or VIP admission $___" These I probably got something from everybody last year.

Thats talking about the main parties, the ones they'll hold in their club or ballroom. There are lots of other parties and for those you just buy tickets for - some sold the night of NYE others you can buy the day before.

These other parties are usually the secondary ones at the property and will be held in the bars or restaurants. And actually, many of the restaurants, especially the steakhouses and high end restaurants, will actually have NYE dinner parties - where they charge you one fee (usually a hefty amount) and then they open the doors around 8-10PM and you come in, have dinner, desserts, drinks, etc as part of you admission and can stay there to celebrate the new year.

It really depends on what day of the week NYE falls on.

Last year NYE was a Saturday and most hotels were not letting people check in on the 31st, so it would have been getting busy on the 30th.

This year NYE is a Monday so the hotels will likely be allowing people to check in on NYE itself.

For the casinos themselves I expect it will be noticeably busier starting on the 28th - that day should be busier than a typical Friday night in Las Vegas. But the real big push of people probably still won't arrive until the 31st and then it'll be around 6PM-ish when the casinos start to get packed with people.

I think one of the big things for NYE is food: everywhere has a pretty big line up starting around 4-5PM. I remember we went to McDonald's next to Harrah's at 5PM to grab an early bite and the lineup there actually started at the foot of the staircase out front. If you actually want to eat in a restaurant around 6-7PM you can probably expect a 45-60 minute wait to get in and then service is going to be slow.

I am thinking if we go for NYE this year what we'll probably do is probably go up to the room around 5PM and grab a 2 hour nap and then around 7PM order up room service. I'd guess it will probably take close to an hour for us to get our food but in that time we can relax, shower, shave, etc so that when the food arrives we can have a decent dinner and then around 9PM head down to the casino.

    You're Not Crazy!

I do not have any tips for you but I will def be in Vegas this NYE 2012! In fact I'm already booked!

The first time I went was NYE 2006 and I stayed at The Luxor and the view looking down the strip was just awesome.
I went again on NYE 2008 the year of the Monte Carlo fire. They shot the fireworks from the parking structures but they
never got up high enough past the buildings to see. It was a real bummer!

Sure I could stay here in O-Town and go to Disney or Universal Studios for a great fireworks display. But there's something
about watching fireworks on the Strip that makes it all worth while! Hopefully it will be business as usual this Dec 31th and
they will be awesome! I'm really looking forward to it!

To follow up on this: I actually just got my first New Years Eve party invite by email today.

Monte Carlo has been sending me offers for the last few months for three nights in a suite with freeplay and show tickets... they just sent me a reminder this morning of that offer but also included the party invite.

The invite is for a regular room for three nights, same amount of freeplay and 2 tickets to their party at The Pub for New Years Eve.

At five and a half months out this is definitely the earliest I've ever received one.
